Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and food

glucophage

Avatar n tn I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if they have experienced food sensitivity and severe gastrointestinal problems on the metformin, and if these symptoms can be dose dependent. If it is the metformin, I was hoping I could tolerate a lower dose rather than stop it entirely. Thanks so much for any info.
194838 tn?1303428544 Hi, I am taking Glucophage (slow release Metformin) and have just been prescribed Januvia to take also. I have had stomach pains and upset stomach since being on them, the plus side is that I have lost weight so am very happy about that but wondered if anyone else has experienced the stomach pain and if so how long did it take for it to subside. If anyone has any advice etc I would be so grateful.
Avatar f tn Also on fertility medicine Femara and thyroid medicine, typing to get pregnant. I need some fruit to take Metformin. Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good? I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits.
Avatar n tn Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
Avatar f tn The basic premise is to each as much natural and fresh food as possible and avoid anything boxed or loaded with preservatives. I've also started to increase my exercise (was doing 3-4 days of cardio and I'm bumping up to 5 with increased distances). Hopefully, the combo of those two things work. Good luck!
Tbd I have diabetes and am having difficulty managing medications. I take 2000 mg of Metformin and 10 mg of Glipizide each day, and I get sick: nausea, dizziness, confusion. What am I doing wrong?
Avatar n tn Metformin is used to treat high blood sugar, and it can cause low blood sugar especially if not enough food was eaten. Yes unless I missed something I would say something is goofed. What was his blood sugar normally?

She also said it is better I remove my fibriods thru laparoscopy. She told me to test for AMH by EIA and I did so , It was 2.
Avatar n tn I was on metformin for a yr and a half and am 34 weeks pregnant right now with a baby girl. Did have to lose weight to make it happen and take metformin but it happened. :) Don't lose hope.
Avatar f tn Before going on metformin my weight was 277. I was put on metformin seven months ago and things have changed alot for me I dont eat as much as I use too. I take 500 mg twice a day. I take at lunch and dinner. The weight seem to just fall off without me really doing anything like execrise. Before I was tested for being insulin resistanced I craved sugary foods like candy. I would buy bags and bags of candy, but once i started metformin all those cravings stopped.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I could quit metformin. I was very conservative and instead of quitting I was taking half pill (250mg). Still, I got these symptoms: extreme thirst, extreme hunger, frequent urination, felt I wasn´t absorbing the food I ate return of psychotic symptoms. I went back to the doctor who found my numbers had not improved but worsened after a year and told me I had impaired glucose tolerance and that I had to keep on taking 500mg metformin.
Avatar m tn I have close friends and a relative that have done the HCG diet they have lost over 55+ lbs.each they feel and look great and recommend it to everyone . I have diabetes 2 and have been off my medication since 09. (Medformin, Er, Simvastatin, and Ramipril.) All these meds made me sick and gain weight. I recently went to my DR due to high blood pressure and he put me back on the meds but Glimpiride 1mg instead of the Medformin. I really need to lose some weight and my Dr is not into fad diets my?
Avatar n tn I'm newly diagnosed diabetic and taking Metformin 500mg 2x a day. I have been taking it for about 10 days and have had the worse cramps and stomach pain! I'm not sure if it is my pre menstrual, which never feels like this, or the new medication. Has anyone had stomach pains or cramps as side effect of Metformin? I'm also taking Lisinopril-HTCZ.
1888358 tn?1320969676 It is advised to take Metformin with food, usually in the middle or end of meal. Metformin ER version releases the drug more slowly and this usually eliminates the gastrointestinal problems. Ask your doctor if you could try a weeks supply. Discuss with your doctor an alternative medication if Metformin ER gastro problems continue. Not everyone can tolerate the same medication, even in different forms. I can't move/lift my lil toe/s unless I move/lift the others.
Avatar f tn Lactic acidosis is a side effect of Metformin in unusual cases and is serious. Metformin needs to be taken with food.
Avatar n tn I am keeping a diary for my doctor and he may prescribe Metformin. I know I can go to Diabetes classes for info but was wondering if one can eat more normally by taking Metformin? And it seemed to spike when I had a cold but the cold is gone, but not the high blood sugar readings. Anyone else affected by illness?
550035 tn?1263160204 Hello everyone. I have a good Dr in the fact that everyone moves so fast but what are the do's and donts of metformin any one know. Wasn't given a sheet from chemist either. I've heard no caffine? Is there anything i can do to enhance its chances of working?
Avatar f tn Having trouble with high BS in the mornings (around 200) and also balancing not eating around Synthroid and taking Metformin with food. I am newly diagnosed with diabetes, started Metformin ER about 3 weeks ago. I had a total thyroidectomy due to cancer about 2 ½ years ago.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with type two diabetes about 18 months ago and feel I can easily accept the changes to diet that I need to adopt. I am controlled with metformin and that is where the problems came in. The good news about metformin is that you cannot hypo so it is fairly risk free. The bad news is what it does to your digestion. I could tolerate the cheap stuff at all, suffering appalling stomach cramps and enough wind to run a small power station.
733939 tn?1231773355 There is no absolute correct way to eat. If someone told me I had to weigh and measure my food and eat only what was on a written list, I'd tell them to shoot me now! Besides, what works for one person doesn't work for another. Learn the guidelines and then find out what works for you with your likes and dislikes, your lifestyle and most of all test, test, test to see how various types of food, eating schedules and portions affect your blood sugar.
Avatar n tn I'm sorry I don't know how the metformin and birth control do together but I also have PCOS and am on metformin. I haven't been on the metformin too long yet but I definitely think it helps. I have found that with PCOS though the only way I have been able to lose any weight is in cutting carbs. I hope this helps. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn camp=msc I also joined s park p eople (no spaces) and I started charting my food and it designed workouts tailored for me and told me how many calories burned and how many I needed to burn. I found out I wasn't eating ENOUGH. Yes you can EAT and lose weight! Woo hoo!
Avatar m tn I am only taking byetta, and no oral hypoglycemics (metformin, etc.)I have lost 29 lbs in that length of time, primarily due to decreased appetite, nausea, and vomiting. I understand that this is in all likelyhood due to delayed gastric emptying. My question: Is this ever going to get better??? All of the information I have read leads me to believe that it probably should have, but nope....no way....same ol', same ol'.....shot, eat, nausea, vomiting. Repeat (excuse the pun) ad nauseam.
Avatar f tn Hi, not really positive however when I was diagnosed with diabetes cut out all the food that I was told to, started taking metformin, 1000 mg a day I started losing weight. I lost 10lbs a month for 3 months.
Avatar n tn I was just dx with PCOS last week and put on Metformin, the same meds. and dosage my husband is on for diabetes. You have to take it with food. AND... follow a lower carb diet. Carbs can make you feel sick and get the runs if your taking Metformin. I am taking 1500mg, 500mgs 3xs a day. Always with food or milk. Did your DR prescribe folic acid with that. I'm taking 4 - 1mg tabs aday. When I was taking it in the morning with the Metformin I would feel sicker.
Avatar f tn I've been on metformin for about a month and a half I take 1500mg/daily. I got my first period with it about 10 days after I started but I didn't have a regular cycle. The cycle only lasted 22days I bleed for 4 days which is the norm for me. I am currently on cd25 waiting for AF. I was wondering has metformin regulated you gals cycle and was it consistent? You know 30, 32, 34 day cycles. If you laedies could tell me your experiences on metformin that would be great.
Avatar f tn Hi I was put on metformin two days ago and I am not sure if what I am feeling are side effects or not. Starting late yesterday afternoon I got extremely tired and my back started to get sore, by night time my lower back was painful and my muscles were crampy and sore. Today I have not been able to do much I am so sleepy. I have also not been hungry or feel like eating. Did anyone else feel any of these things when starting metformin?
