This is a clear criminal act. How come FDA is not allowing the safe to use Mesalazine Enema, which has been used for years in Europe and Canada? I am not certain how I can spread the word so that all UC patients who are suffering can get benefited. Please spread the word and let CCFA know that this drug needs to be made available in US. I have to buy it from UK or Canada at my own expenses. This is outrageous when I am paying so much for insurance. Please advise.
During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories.
My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?

Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.

My recent result of biopsy after the colonoscopy indicates epithelial dysplasia. My doctor just advice me to continue taking the mesalamine (Asacol) Do i need an another urgent medication/treatment for dysplasia? What should be my next move?

I have been suffering from chronic ulcerative colitis (UC) over the last twenty years. I’m in control of it and lead almost a normal life. I’m currently on 3 grams of Rafassal (Mesalazine) and 200 mg of Imuran (Azathioprine).
My last colonoscopy revealed multiple areas suspicious of low grade dysplasia (LGD) in sigmoid colon and recotoanal junction. There is also doubt they might be high grade dysplasia (HGD).
My doctor advised that these LGDs be removed.

I was diagnosed with sigmoidal colitis in 2005, but I reckon that it went unchecked for about 4 years prior to that. I was initially treated with mesalamine (Asacol) but it had no effect. My GI guy then hit me with prednisone and that knocked it down. I have been on Asacol in a prophylactic capacity since (800mg tid). Does it keep me in remission. Maybe, but maybe it is the tremendous quantities of fentanyl, diacetylmorphine and morphine I abused as well for all I know :P.
What other symptoms are present? Mesalamine or Canasa suppositories works by preventing the production of substances that cause the inflammation of the colon. The usual side effects include diarrhea; dizziness; gas; hair loss; headache; mild stomach discomfort or pain; and nausea. The sour taste could be indirectly related especially if you have other gastrointestinal issues like acid peptic disease or gerd.
There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect.

2 - Would you suggest any HIV testing to me? I think I am ready to move on if you will not tell me that tested is warranted to me.
3 - You think GE was professional by giving me mesalazine after sigmoidoscopy (when I have been told proctitis I knew nothing about causes)? You think proctitis cannot be related to HIV?
4 - Nodes - Can 2 nodes be related to autoimmune proctitis? Should I get further in analysing my nodes?
She again had colonoscopy and histological examination inferred that it was ulcer. She is being treated with Mesalamine and now she is well. Please check with your doctor.

"Infectious colitides such as Clostridia difficile, hemorrhagic E. coli, Campylobacter, Aeromonas, and Salmonellosis can often present as severe ulcerative colitis. Other infectious pathogens, which also need to be included in the differential diagnoses, include Amebiasis, Shigellosis, Cytomegalovirus, and Rotavirus.
It is rather general question. I was taking mesalazine , it is an anti-inflammatory drug but has also some immunosuppressive functions. I stopped it 4 months before testing.
I have Crohn's also. I'm pregnant with my second child and have not had a problem either time. However, my doctors did tell me that if you're Crohn's is under control when you get pregnant, it's likely that your condition will stay the same or get better during pregnancy. If you're having a flare up or the disease is not controlled well when you get pregnant it will likely get worse.
In terms of medication I would trust your doctors here.
If it is not effective, then other medications like steroids, mesalamine and bismuth subsalicylate may be tried.

Mesalazine may also cause some stomach upset (read for side effects on the label).
t seem to help with the underlying problems. The doctor then prescribed Canasa (mesalazine) suppositories for 10 days, which seemed to help while I was using them (though they didn't entirely clear up the problems and also caused me to have more gas). Since completing the 10 days of using the suppositories, my symptoms have been just as bad as before I started using them, or maybe even a little worse.
Hi . I am a 20 years old male and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 8 month ago. It is proctitis and i'm currently taking 6 tabs and 2 supps of mesalazine daily.. i want to use whey protein or amino acids tab for muscle buliding .. i have asked about it from 6 different doctors and all of them advised me not to use them.. but i realy dont understand why i cant take them.. is it safe to take homemade whey protein ? Why shouldnt i take whey supplement and how can it affect my disease?

I'm sorry about your recent U.C. diagnosis.
According to the mfg:
"The dosage of Mesalamine 500 mg suppositories (Generic Canasa) is one rectal suppository once daily at bedtime.
The suppository should remain inserted for one to three hours or longer, if possible. The normal course of therapy is from three to six weeks depending on symptoms and sigmoidoscopic findings".
So the 30 day supply falls within the recommended duration.
