Hello all UC Patients,
I was diagnosed with UC few years back and tried every medication (ASA, Rowasa Enema, Prednisone, Immuno-Suppresants, Remicade, VSL-3, etc). I have been hospitalized four times in last two years. Finally I met a doctor in UK who prescribed Asacol Foam Enema. I was unable to get into remission for last so many years with all drugs, however, with this foam enema, I got in full remission in just few weeks.
During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository. In moderate flare-ups mesalamine orally w/ mesalamine suppositories.
My question is - beyond the general risk that HSV presents - how additionally risky is this for me? It is a possibility that at some point I will have a flare-up that will require immonusuppressive therapy. If I was to contract HSV could my UC symptoms become more severe?
Her gastroenterologist started her on Mesalamine (4 capsules daily) and later added prednisone 100 mg enemas to try and get the flare-up under control. Things are getting better and she has some of her strength back. There is one puzzling thing that the doctors are not able to pinpoint. This is an intermittent fever that starts in the afternoon and lasts to the night. In the morning the temperature is back to a low 97 degrees fahrenheit and stays stable until afternoon below 98 degrees.
My recent result of biopsy after the colonoscopy indicates epithelial dysplasia. My doctor just advice me to continue taking the mesalamine (Asacol) Do i need an another urgent medication/treatment for dysplasia? What should be my next move?
I have read about a study in which Boswellia was used in conjunction with Mesalamine. My gastroenterologist knows notheing about herbs, but is open to information that I can give her. What is available? Are there any interactions with boswellia and mesalamine that I should be cautious about? Are there any precastions about its use?
A family friend (who gave birth 35yrs ago) said that before she delivered she received an enema. Do they still do this?? She also told me morning sickness starts in the second trimester and i definitely know that is wrong lol.
My mom told me that in the hospitals Some of them give you Enemas and I really don't want one!! Unless I for some reason need one, but she also said they do it as a precaution so the baby doesn't swallow or breath in BM. I'm all for it if it Needs to be done for her safety but I'm not sure about it.. Any stories or advise.
Has anyone had to use a enema or went to the er and had one done? Should i try it myself or go to er? Does it hurt? What should i expect? Im really nerves and kinda scared :( never had any of these prob. Be4 and this is all new to me..

I was diagnosed with sigmoidal colitis in 2005, but I reckon that it went unchecked for about 4 years prior to that. I was initially treated with mesalamine (Asacol) but it had no effect. My GI guy then hit me with prednisone and that knocked it down. I have been on Asacol in a prophylactic capacity since (800mg tid). Does it keep me in remission. Maybe, but maybe it is the tremendous quantities of fentanyl, diacetylmorphine and morphine I abused as well for all I know :P.
What other symptoms are present? Mesalamine or Canasa suppositories works by preventing the production of substances that cause the inflammation of the colon. The usual side effects include diarrhea; dizziness; gas; hair loss; headache; mild stomach discomfort or pain; and nausea. The sour taste could be indirectly related especially if you have other gastrointestinal issues like acid peptic disease or gerd.
I did a little research and found that mineral oil enemas do not apear to be toxic to cats. BUT...there is an enema out there (phosphate enema) that is very toxic to cats. I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that a brand name enema (Fleet) makes both mineral oil enemas and phosphate enemas.

There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect.

Can pulps be detected with this B. Enema and if found how will they be removed? Will this B. Enema replace the colonoscopy in my future screenings? If no pulps were found up to the hepatic flexture, why do I need to proceed with this recommendation of the P. Enema?
My parents and I have been doing it over the past few months. We boil coffee to do enema with enema buckets that we have already. The reason I started doing it is because of constant fatigue, always feeling tired and of course, my bowel movements are not so constant. After the first time doing, I felt some improvement. After each time I do enema I feel better and better. Until the last few times I did I start to have this pain I mentioned, which worries me.
What is the practice ragrding enema in the US hospitals? Do women get enema in the hospital before labor or is it suggested to do it at home before heading to the hospital?

It sounds as though the doc wants to perform a barium enema which is basically a special x-ray of the large intestine (colon and rectum) to look for structural featues and look for any changes/abnormalities. Before x-rays are taken, a liquid called barium sulfate is placed into the rectal area. This provides a 'contrast agent' that can highlight specific areas inside the body for a clear image.
I went in for a barium enema today and was shocked by how much it hurt to have the ballon inflated. I had to abort the test because the pain was intolerable. Do you think that the ballon was placed in the wrong area? I had some bleeding after they removed the balloon is that normal? Acutally I feel so vialated mostlly because they did not warn me about the pain and inflated that balloon so fast.
