Menopause periods lasting longer

Common Questions and Answers about Menopause periods lasting longer

period

Avatar m tn These weird things happen at the start of and during menopause. So are heavy periods that go on 2 weeks or more, and 2-3 months or so without a period. Ovulation gets all messed-up so intervals between periods go wacky. But it's always best to have an obs/gyn referral from your doctor, and get checked out thoroughly so you can rule out any other problem first. (I was a regular visitor to my ob/gyn specialist for a couple of years!! They got sick of seeing me!
Avatar f tn t think it is ms related, i am 49 but have gone through menopause, before i did i was very regular and then they started getting closer and closer and lasting longer, then they quit, most often they get further apart but mt dr said they can go both ways
53833 tn?1234996629 This is at age 46 after a lifetime of regular, heavy flow, intensely crampy but predictable periods lasting 5 to 7 days every 28 days, which last year turned into periods lasting 8 to 10 days with extremely heavy flooding. When will there be an end to this madness? It seems like I get about 3 days a month where I feel like my normal self, then it all starts again.
Avatar n tn I am almost 54 years old and still having one to two periods a month lasting 5 to 7 days each! Drs did tests that can predict possible onset of menopause, and it came back negative! I am not overweight. I have type 1 diabetes and wear an insulin pump but blood sugars are not well controlled. Drs do not think this is a cause for multiple periods either! Help! I hate not knowing when I may have a start up! The periods screw up my sugars so badly! Any ideas what can cause this?
Avatar f tn I had a very similar experience prior to my hysterectomy. I had been having periods lasting 3+ weeks, very heavy and painful, a week or two off and then it would return. Also, they had been irregular all my life. They eventually found I had fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. Since you don't mention painful periods, just prolonged bleeding, you may have other things goings on.
12205224 tn?1424027156 I am 53 years old. I have always had heavy periods, but lately my periods have lasted a long time, sometimes two weeks or more, and they become very heavy with lots of clotting. I have to wear two super plus tampons at a time and a pantiliner because they always leak. I hate it! What should I do? What can be done to make this more tolerable or stop altogether?
Avatar f tn Also it is difficult to say whether this is the beginning of menopause. Menopause occurs when there is cessation of menses for at least one year. Hormonal assay can be done to get an idea about the same. Consult your Doctor for a thorough evaluation. Hope this helps. Take care and good luck.
Avatar n tn Usually the brown discharge only lasts a day or two at the end of your period. Everyone is different though, but it shouldn't last a week or more. If it's lasting longer then you could have an infection or something. If it doesn't go away at all then I would suggest seeing your doctor.
Avatar f tn The past 5 months, nothing, no psm at all but still getting regular periods. Could it be menopause or perrimenopause setting in. 47 yrs old. Good health.
Avatar n tn You might be a little young for it, but perimenopause might be a possibility, and periods often get heavier as women approach menopause. It sounds like you might be anemic, though, which is something you'd need tested by your doctor. Even though it's hard to get in to be seen, at this point it sounds like it would be worth it.
Avatar f tn It is heavier than ever at times and lasts a bit longer than it used to. My doctor says that this is normal. Although very annoying. I mean, I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital for a blood transfusion last month. lol. My hormones are shifting a good deal right now. (working hard not to snap anyone's head off with the emotional side of it!) Two solid weeks of period though is a lot.
Avatar n tn I am 47 and have had regular periods for years. There is NO WAY that I am pregnant. I just had my regular period (5 days/bright red blood). Now two days later I have back cramps and I am begiining to flow again. What could be happening? Menopause beginning? Help.
16921377 tn?1452396949 Brown blood is common both at the very beginning of a period and at the end. It simply indicates that the endometrium has sat a little while before shedding from the uterus. Menopause is defined as having no more periods for a year. Some women get to that point and then suddenly have an unexpected period, the count starts again when that happens. Some women don't completely stop having periods for a lot longer than age 51, I had a friend whose last period was when she was 73!
Avatar f tn MY HUSBAND AND I CONCEIVED BOTH OUR TWO CHILDREN ON THE FERTILITY DRUG CLOMID AS 5 YEARS AGO MY PERIODS WERE VERY IRREGULAR AND WE WERE HAVING NO LUCK FALLING PREGNANT. MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED THEM. SINCE HAVING MY 2ND CHILD TWO YEARS AGO MY PERIODS HAVE BEEN VERY REGULAR (EVERY 31 DAYS) BUT BLEEDING HAS BEEN BROWN AND AS EACH PERIOD COMES THERE IS LESS BRIGHT RED BLOOD.
Avatar m tn i am/went through the same things you are i missed my period for 70 days then returned every 28-30 days for 2 months then a week later just brown discharge. had (hormone)FSH and LH bloodwork normal but within post menopausal stage. i am 46 and 10 days ago i developed night sweats. so i shower before bedtime but after i dry off i dress in my pjs and now i get hot flashes...tomorrow i am going to my gyn for an unplanned apt.
Avatar f tn Menstrual irregularity. As ovulation becomes more erratic, the intervals between periods may be longer or shorter, your flow may be scanty to profuse, and you may skip some periods. Hot flashes and sleep problems. About 65 to 75 percent of women experience hot flashes during perimenopause. Their intensity, duration and frequency vary. Sleep problems are often due to hot flashes or night sweats, but sometimes sleep becomes erratic even without them. Mood changes.
Avatar f tn Brown discharge has happened to me before. When I have had a late period or when everything exits my body a little later than normal. But this time it feels like it's lasting longer. I have not been able to smell anything from it (though I haven't directly smelled it). I'm not having pain in my pelvic area, or any burning or itching. I read online that it could be ovulation and it will last a few days. I would say it's been going on at least 4-5 days.
Avatar f tn The last 5 months or so, I have been all over the map. One month I had 3 periods (each lasting about 5 days... and a few days in between each period), then nothing for 2 months, then a 2 week long period.. then most recently a 4 day long period (short for me... and super heavy). I am also having temperature issues. I am either freezing cold or I'm having hot flashes (everyone else will be fine... and all of a sudden I'm so hot, and my face, neck and upper body is drenched in sweat...
Avatar f tn As a woman gets to a certain age (this will depend on your mother and grandmother), but it can be from 40 onwards, periods may start to be shorter, longer, or you may experience loss of periods for a month or so and then have a period. Some women may experience other symptoms like emotional and physical problems and severe sweating, usually at night time, but it can happen any time. A blood test can confirm if there are any hormonal changes going on.
Avatar m tn I would certainly want to hear from my patient if she was having periods lasting longer than 10 days for more than one month. Good luck!
Avatar m tn It's not unusual at all to keep having periods. But it's a start with you on going into menopause. You'll keep having periods off and on till you start menopause. You slowly will have longer times between getting a period. I started going into peri-menopause last year. I always had monthly periods but they were messed up. Now this year, is the first time that I get spotting and then I don't have spotting.
Avatar f tn over the past 2 years I have gained 15 pounds despite increased exercise and have had flooding periods lasting 7 to 10 days with large clots the size of raw eggs; and for the past 3 cycles my periods are now coming 18 to 20 days apart with the worst cramping I have ever experienced but thankfully now only lasting 5 days. My emotions range from apathy to jittery anxiety, and I have had dizziness and actual vertigo intermittently for the past 3 months.
Avatar f tn You could be starting perimenopause when anything goes... shorter or longer cyles, shorter or longer periods, heavier or lighter periods. And this can go on for 5+ years.
