Memory problems after surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Memory problems after surgery

memory

Avatar f tn One study indicated that only half of those undergoing bypass surgery developed memory or thinking problems within days after the operation, and that these problems continued for five years. However, other researchers found that mental deficiencies are common after bypass surgery, but that most people recuperate in 3 to 12 weeks. Not thinking clearly and some memory loss may cause a feeling of insecurity, anxiety, etc.
Avatar f tn I had my surgery about 11 years ago and with each passing year I have noticed that my memory and other symptoms such as sever neck and shoulder pain and other problems get worse with each passing year. All I get from doctors is pain meds, that only make me sleepy (one of my other problems is I'm constantly sleepy) that I don't want. Has anyone had ANY problems after surgery??? Please help! I feel like I'm going crazy!!!
Avatar n tn Losing a whole day, and having some memory problems for awhile after open heart is not that uncommon. What he might be going through is problems with his meds. You can take a list of all of them to your pharmacist to ask what the possible side effects are. I'm a little surprised his Cardio Dr has'nt thought about this. Or has your husband not mentioned the memory problems to his Dr yet?
Avatar n tn It indicated that half of people undergoing bypass surgery developed memory or thinking problems in the days following it, and that these problems were usually still evident five years later. A different viewpoint: Johns Hopkins researchers who have been at the forefront of this field reviewed the evidence on short-term and long-term mental changes after bypass surgery.
Avatar m tn Suffered from a little PPD after birth of son and prescribed Effexor. After one year I was taken off meds very slowly. After 6 months, while driving one day, I "zoned out" for about 30 miles. When I came to I had no idea how I had gotten where I was. Also had feeling of stuffy head or sinus issues. Few weeks later while driving I started becoming very sensitive to sunlight. Went to eye dr and got glasses 20/40. They made it worse.
Avatar m tn I've been told that after a heart bypass surgery there could a condition called "Humphead". This condition apparently effects the brain. What does this condition do?
Avatar n tn I have also had memory problems. I had full-day neuropsychological testing and my memory and processing speed were 30 points below my average IQ. I also had an MRI, which showed no abnormalities. The headaches, as I mentioned before were initially fairly mild, with only the right (occipital?) area of my head affected, as they have worsened I can feel the pain down the right side of my neck, extending down my cartoid? artery and in my ear.
Avatar m tn It sounds like you may be having some work problems. That can cause stress and the memory problems too.
676143 tn?1312941771 So does anyone else have problems with memory lately? I feel like the baby is sucking my brain away. I keep forgetting so many little things. Luckily, it hasn't gotten me in to too much trouble yet - but one of these days I am going to forget something really important!
Avatar f tn I still have this problem even after surgery. Age has something to do with mine. I just turned 50 LOL....I would suggest your daughter to write herself a note for a remind her of what she needs to do. This could be due to the pressure she has in her head. Does she deal with a lot of HA's? Hope this helpful tip helps.
Avatar f tn I have the exact problem. I have ADHD. I dont remember a lot before the age of 13, from then I had to mostly relearn everything I had learned in my younger years. Now I find it hard to remember anything I read, listen to, or try and study. I feel lost and confused since I am only 19 with this type of problem.
1830047 tn?1321667793 I did not remember that at all during the argument. After he mentioned it, I had a vague memory of making a copy. I have since disavowed responsibility for anything! ;D Another woman on the Lyme forum described times when other people recounted conversations they had with her, which she couldn't remember at all, even after they described it. Obviously, there is a neurological problem going on there.
Avatar f tn Not that I would wish any one on this post, especially you Dave, to have memory problems, but at least I feel more assured that it is normal. Thanks for responding.
690065 tn?1261457649 I am presenting with the same symptoms when they found the cyst. Headaches, nausea, memory problems, recall issues, moodiness, depression and very poor balance. My craniotomy was in May of 2010 and the postoperative symptoms have started within the past year. I'm trying to gather information on who and how many patients are experiencing these post-op symptoms.
1260255 tn?1288654564 I've read people mentioning memory problems, but have not seen one type of memory problem discussed. Do any of you have problems where your memory does not store information? There are numerous occasions when I have absolutely no recall of conversations. This happened several weeks ago when my son called me at work. He told me that the grill was corroded at the bottom. I have no recall of this whatsoever, but his girlfriend was sitting next to him and vouches for him.
Avatar m tn And I feel like I have forgotten everything I spent the past 3-4 years paying to learn ! I was an honours student in undergrad and never had memory problems before. I am also having huge problems concentrating on what people are saying to me. It's like I am not listening no matter how hard I try to listen my brain wanders off into zombie land. And I am only 29. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to regain one's memory and concentration ?
Avatar f tn Welcome to the Chiari forum. You will find that a lot of us with Chiari have memory problems. Mine is short term and can be very bothersome. I am not sure about meds, but hopefully someone else on here can answer that. Good luck and make sure any NS you see if a specialist. I have seem two NS, one I was referred to by my PCP and the other I found the name of while researching Chiari. The 2nd was far more knowledgeable and more pleaseant. He is the doctor I decided to have do my surgery.
Avatar f tn Also noticing memory problems. Anybody have any ideas? Sensory preception problems have been mentioned to me. Going to U of M not to much info coming.....
1580703 tn?1651904887 Dear Doctor, thanks very much for your help!!!! I had trach surgery and am in pain, bleeding and exhausted, light-headed after the surgery. I'm a large person and and I was given a shiley 6 which is too small and percocet. is that normal to be so tired?
Avatar f tn Memory and motivation problems are a symptom of hypothyroidism (under medication). It sounds like your stepdad might need his meds adjusted. Can you post his most recent thyroid lab work with reference ranges? Ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from his own lab report. What is he taking for meds? Does he have other symptoms?
Avatar n tn Then in 2006 I had a heart transplant and again was on the bypass about 4 more hours. I do have memory problems. Are these after 4 years most likely going to permanent memory loss?
Avatar n tn Hi, Any trauma to the brain can result in seizures and brain surgery is traumatizing to the brain so seizures are fairly common after brain surgery. Anticonvulsants are usually prescribed to treat seizures after surgery. Short term memory loss can occur after brain surgery which may get better with time. I would still advise you to get a clinical evaluation done by your neurologist. Keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Has anyone experienced memory loss after their heart attack? Is this the meds or aftereffects of the MI? I'm having lots of trouble after returning to work with dates, appointments, names. Is this temporary and should I tell the doc? I'm taking Plavix/Metaprolol/Lipitor/Niaspan/Asprin/Dilantin. Should I see my neurologist for safe measure?
8170270 tn?1413845335 I continue to have pain and migraines but the newer symptoms (symptoms after surgery) include chronic fatigue, intense pressure, weakness in my neck. I've had images done that suggest scar tissue build up is blocking the flow of csf. Surgery was suggested (ETV) but I'm very wary of the idea of another major surgery. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks in advance!
