Avatar n tn The study you reference concerns me in that is was for only 3 months. These medications are usually prescribed for long-term treatment. To my recent horror my triglycerides had leaped to nearly 300. Reviewing my historic levels, I saw two specific time when my Tri levels 'doubled'. This was following the doubling of my propranolol dosage, however not as an immediate effect.

Avatar m tn Hello and welcome to the forum. Thanks so much for your question. So, I'm very glad to read your total cholesterol dropped. That's good news. Triglycerides are a different lipid and that has risen indicates you have a bit of work to do. When total cholesterol is not affected but triglycerides rise, it's called hypertriglyceridemia. There are natural ways to try and combat this. Just like with your total cholesterol, your diet matters.
Avatar m tn You don't say what your LDL lipid levels are? however your total cholesterol level isn't too bad. Your HDL is a bit on the low side but there are ways to boost this and exercise is one way. Your triglycerides are very high. Do you have a lot of sugar in your diet? I'm not sure if you need statins, but there are medications to lower trigs which I believe are called fibrates and these also raise HDL.
Avatar m tn I know there is a connection with HIV and high Triglycerides and such but I am unsure of if it would be the ART or the virus itself that can cause it? Reason I ask is I have had a couple of tests, but made a couple of mistakes since then...my lipid profile showed massive elevations in triglycerides (almost 1000) I drank a lot of soda and smoked so i know those had something to do with it.
Avatar m tn Salmon and hard chocolate is suppose to raise the HDL. There are cholesterol medications out there that do raise HDL. Your HDL should be at least in the 30's for a male. Your LDL should be 100 or less. Eat vegetable and fruits that are fresh. No canned foods. No processed meats. You have to be very strict with your diet to help reduce further blockage.
Avatar m tn But high triglycerides can raise your risk of heart disease and may be a sign of metabolic syndrome. For some insight on metabolic syndrome it is the involves and includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, too much fat around the waist, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, and high triglycerides. Metabolic syndrome increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Avatar m tn If you or your doctor wants to raise the HDL faster by using prescription medications, niacin would be the drug to use. It has it's own side effects though and I don't know if it would be compatable with your A-fib. BTW, your A-fib itself might present a greater stroke risk than plague formation. A-fib allows blood to stagnate in the atria and form tiny clots. Those clots can shot straight up through the carotid artery to the brain where they can occlude arteries and cause strokes.
Avatar m tn org/health/articles/11920-cholesterol-numbers-what-do-they-mean Things that raise triglycerides are eating things like a lot of white foods, like rice, pasta or bread or drinking a lot of alcohol. Normally if someone has high triglycerides, they recommend lifestyle changes to help improve that. What is your total cholesterol number? Remember too that heredity plays a role in our cholesterol.
212161 tn?1599427282 The good news is that we can treat this with medications and diet. Level greater than 500 are concerning and should be treated aggressively.
Avatar f tn //pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11584104/ It can raise triglycerides by as much as 30 to 40% Ask your doctor, but backing off the high carb diet would likely help you reverse this number. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/13-ways-to-lower-triglycerides Let us know what you think and how this goes.
Avatar m tn Simply losing weight brings down the trig numbers, but losing weight is no easy thing to do. Foods with high sugar contents raise the trigs. Beer and hard liquor certainly jacks them up, wine less so, it's a more complex sugar I'm told. Also, a diebetic diet would help. I lowered mine greatly over a twelve year period by losing 50 fifty pounds over that period of time, exercising daily and taking 2000 mg of fish oil daily.
Avatar m tn Alcohol can also increase your level of triglycerides, a form of cholesterol that hardens the arteries in the body. Medical Review: "Alcohol can also increase your level of triglycerides, a form of cholesterol that hardens the arteries in the body". Alcohol can increase your blood pressure. Hope this helps answer your questions. Take care.
Avatar f tn cing the medication, it would be an abundance of caution to try to keep from developing diabetes by cutting back a bit on sweets and carbs, but might have positive effects in other ways also, such as contribute toward keeping plaque forming triglycerides down and might help toward not putting on those unwelcome pounds that can come unbidden to so many of us after a certain age with our slowed metabolism.
Avatar m tn I'm curious when you say Mediterranean diet but say no wine? That kind of rules out that diet, which is partly based on the antioxidants contained in red wine. It's also very high in olive oil and fatty fish, which should give you pretty good HDL levels -- in fact, looking at the numbers, your HDL isn't all that low, at least from what you report -- a couple fish oil or flax seed capsules a day should elevate it.
Avatar f tn t know of any foods which particularly raise HDL, I just know that good exercise can raise it. When exercising, you release fats to use as energy so its ready for when the carbs run low. Your body creates lots of HDL to keep the LDL in balance during that time. I've seen this many times in people where they reduce the LDL, and the HDL reduces too. I think it's because the HDL production is triggered by the LDL production or amount in the blood.
Avatar n tn I think the internet is the worst place for me as since getting my cholesterol tests back i am a wreck and have not been to work.. My total was 148.. Triglycerides were 52. Ldl was 100 but the hdl was only 37.. This has thrown me into a tizzy thinking I am a walking time bomb as keep reading all about hdl hdl.. Avatar n tn Most cough drop medications do carry warnings with regard to use with other medications and side effects that may experienced. There will also be a warning that if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients, you should not use the product. Avatar m tn In addition, neither will raise glucose levels. Butter contains animal fat. Animal fat raises LDL [bad cholesterol] and triglycerides levels exponentially. Margarine is made with chemicals. Research has it the fat in margarine leads to heart problems. In either case, if you have to use them moderation is the key.
