Common Questions and Answers about Medications that prevent blood donation

Avatar f tn A follow-up question from my original post answered by Dr. Hook: I had given a whole blood donation 7 days after a last possible exposure. I didn't have the information at the time that made me worry about getting tested and the service I donated through was able to recall my donation and not give it to someone. I had the PCR DNA test at 28 days, and antibody tests at 55 days, 69 days and 85 days - all negative.
Avatar f tn 1. Nizoral or Dezor anti-dandruff shampoo (the last time I checked, its active ingredient is Ketaconazole) 2. Regro 5% (Minoxidil) topical solution- I have a minor bald spot which resembles the condition of male-pattern baldness. It is not severe of course, and not that obvious according to most people I know. But to prevent any exacerbation of this in the long run, I spray it on and rub it on my scalp once a day.
Avatar m tn You would need to ask your doctor that as well as the blood or plasma donation center.

Avatar m tn I have donated many times while on Klonopin and various antidepressants. They will ask you what medications you are on and if there is anything that would affect you or the blood you're donating, they will not allow you to donate. Take care.
Avatar f tn my question is that ..if somebody feels he needs to be tested and he donates his blood after 2 months(i.e.bfore the window period which is 3 months)in order to confirm that whether he is + or - and the results comes out to be NEGATIVE...so what does that means ...is he safe or not???
Avatar n tn Im getting married by the end of this year and someone advised me to stop donating blood as it can lead to irregular periods and problems in conceiving (this lady had similar problems and was advised by her gyn to stop blood donation). Is ths something which happens to a lot of women?
Avatar n tn always make sure you and partners get full std testing that includes herpes igg blood testing prior to unprotected sex.
Avatar m tn yeah, since I've had six or seven transfusions (can't remember) I try not to worry about what might have been in the blood that we just don't know about or test for yet, and I hope that every unit I received was from a high school student who decided that abstinence was best (LOL yeah, right)
Avatar m tn ve been diagnosed with EBV but suffer only occassional and mild bouts of it. I stopped donating blood after a suspected that it was triggering EBV, but couldn't positively link it. I stopped donating blood for about a year, and I've been free of EBV symptoms for over a year too. Two weeks ago I got a call from the blood bank, so I decided to donate and see what happened. A week after donating I tried to do a little running and totally bonked.
Avatar n tn In other words, the official blood donation guidelines do not change the simple fact that your test results prove with 100% certainty you did not catch HIV. Don't worry about it. I hope this has helped.
Avatar n tn our system of blood donation isn't perfect but they do do the best testing possible. If everyone who had recently had unprotected sex with a partner who's std status they aren't aware of didn't donate blood, we'd have even less supply than we do now. if it was a high risk partner who you think could have hepatitis or hiv and it was unprotected sex then avoiding donating for 3 months is a good idea and they do ask questions covering those bases when you donate.
Avatar f tn I also wonder (but cannot definitively determine) if my POTS symptoms were triggered by a blood donation. I had donated blood several times before, but the last time I donated blood, it was almost as if my body didn’t recover like it normally would and I started noticing POTS symptoms a few weeks after my last donation.
Avatar m tn I suspect the answer may vary. Since the discovery of occult hbv, that is HBsAg -ve but detectable hbvdna, blood donation services are more cautious if a donor is HBcAb positive, indicating a past hbv infection and therefore may potentially have occult hbv. The more advanced donation services will now screen donors using a nucleic acid test.
Avatar m tn The blood transfusion service tests donors for anemia before each blood donation. This test will exclude a thalassaemia carrier with mild anaemia. If you have anemia, then you cannot donate blood. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar f tn Answer the questionnaire at the blood bank truthfully to ascertain whether you can give blood or not. There is perhaps a sample questionnaire from your local blood transfusion service on the web.
Avatar n tn Before I donated blood, the doctor made my finger for a little blood. After that, they said I can donate my blood. So , befor the donation, do they detect my HIV status through my little blood of finger??
Avatar f tn Consequently, air got in the line and they stopped the donation saying that it was now contaminated. I noticed the last time I gave blood that it seemed to take longer for me than for others. (Several people who started their donation after me left before me.) What may cause this? Should I be concerned? Thanks for any insight you can provide!
