Common Questions and Answers about Medications that grapefruit interfere with

drug

Avatar n tn Grapefruit juice can interfere with how the body breaks down and eliminates medications. Many medications are broken down by the liver using an enzyme called cytochrome P450, which is inhibited by grapefruit juice. Consequently, grapefruit juice can increase the levels of many drugs in the body, including several cholesterol-lowering statins. However, grapefruit juice does not interfere with the metabolism of beta blockers.

1815939 tn?1377991799 Here are a couple of links. One of the links has a list of the drugs that interact with grapefruit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_drugs_affected_by_grapefruit http://hepatitiscnewdrugs.blogspot.com/2011/01/grapefruit-juice-dangerous-medication.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
1322157 tn?1279656681 So, I just poured myself a glass of grapefruit juice and took my medicine - then for some reason I remembered that grapefruit juice interacts with some medications. I just did a quick search online and here is a list (probably not complete) of some medications that interact badly with grapefruit juice. Including some opiates.... Please be careful! a small part of the piece I read: "Amy Karch, R.N., M.S.
1225178 tn?1318980604 Dianne, grapefruit contains compounds that can interfere with certain enzymes; I’m not positive, but I don’t think either interferon or ribavirin is on that list. Wikipedia lists these drugs as being affected by grapefruit; I don’t know how comprehensive this is though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_drugs_affected_by_grapefruit It’s worth a look just in case something other than HCV drugs you’re taking is on there.
976606 tn?1263667593 m going to have to try to find it again because *I* love grapefruit and juice- but quit eating it when I read that list......that means that I gave/threw away almost all the grapefruits off our tree last year...........Oh woe is me...................

Avatar f tn Thanks for the input, it is another proof, that those the above mentioned substances interfere with medications and treatment. Interesting, I will check up on the cinnamon.
Avatar f tn As far as i understand it grapefruit juice helps when TTC by thinning cervical mucus, i don't know if it will help some of you but I've heard that orange juice has a similar effect although slightly lessened, that and the Vit-c content was the reason our family prescribes it for coughs or a blocked nose. It's also somewhat more tolerable taste-wise.
Avatar f tn Hey Jean. I just joined myself but have been HCV for (by my estimate 21 years now). I won't say it can't be incredibly hard. There's the social stigma, coming to terms with the fact you have it and then the telling of family and friends, not to mention dating and that's just the emotional side. A good place to start is educating yourself about transmission, that way you can feel confident in yourself that you can protect those you love and encounter.
Avatar n tn hadn't heard that before...hmmm.. I know if you're taking any benzos (valium, xanax, etc) you don't want to drink grapefruit juice.. maybe some else knows? best wishes to you! I know this is hard. we're here for you!!

Avatar n tn I was told it could interfere with absorbtion, although 1 or 2 every so often will probably not have much of an effect. I still eat some every once in a while just because I like them. You probably shouldn't eat them all the time, but on occassion should be ok.
Avatar n tn I believe that is why you are not meant to have grapefruit with a heap of different medications including most anti-depressants, though i am not a doctor but that is what i was told, so correct me if i am wrong. It depends on how the medication is digested and how it works within the body, i think that's why some medications and not others. If you want more information ask your doctor next time you see them.
Avatar f tn are their any home remedies that I can do that will not interfere with my medications to counter this side effect? Stopping medication is not an option, nor is switching to another medication at this time.
Avatar f tn Amy Karch, RN, MS, of the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center, an expert on drug interactions, explains that grapefruit juice is one of the foods most likely to cause problems with medications. The cytochrome P-450 3A4 enzyme breaks down grapefruit juice into useful components for the body, just like it breaks down dozens of medications.
Avatar n tn Would you happen to know if it is okay to have acidic juices with ACYCLOVIR? She was told that they may interfere with their effectiveness......
Avatar n tn Grapefruit and it's juice sometimes keep medications from being absorbed, just don't take your medication real close to eating grapefruit of drinking the juice. That's the only problem there may be with it. You're smart to question this!
Avatar f tn I wouldn't advise using any supplements without clearing it with transplant first. Generally a multi vitamin without iron is okay but again, I would clear it first. I assume you know that grapefruit can interfere with the anti rejection drugs but, in case you don't, grapefruit should be avoided and particularly around the time he takes his meds. Personally, I never eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice.
Avatar m tn The doctor suggested that men that find that this becomes a problem should have their testosterone levels checked. Not sure if that means another medication to help in that area, but it sounded like something that would be worth checking out.
Avatar m tn There are a number of medications that one should not have with grapefruit. Other citrus are probably okay: >>Oranges, lemons and limes are less likely to interact with medications. However, tangelos, related to the grapefruit, and Seville oranges affect the same enzyme as grapefruit juice. Seville oranges are often used to make orange marmalade, and so be mindful when selecting this spread for your toast.<< From: http://drugs.about.com/od/medicationabcs/a/gjuice_drugs.
