Medications given before anesthesia

Common Questions and Answers about Medications given before anesthesia

drug

Avatar m tn Some months ago I had an anesthesia for a gastroscopy. There were usde the following neuroleptics: propofol, midazolam and fentanyl. I slept for about 2 hours and as soon as I woke up I was abnormally acting like a drunk. That being ended up in a couple of hours but unfortunately some symptoms and problems remained.
Avatar f tn Local anesthesia may be used by your health care provider during delivery to numb a painful area in or around the vagina if stitches are needed. Local medications do not reduce discomfort during labor. Regional anesthesia (also called an epidural or spinal anesthesia) is administered by an anesthesiologist (a doctor who delivers pain medicine) during labor to reduce discomfort.
Avatar f tn This will be my first experience of surgery or general anesthesia. Is this anesthesia assessment routinely done before surgery or do you have to request it? Are you given a mini dose of the anesthetic to see how you will react or what?
Avatar f tn 5 mg and Altace 10 mg.) 5 hours before having an Endoscopy? Would the pressure go to low with the anesthesia or go to high without the hypertension medications?
Avatar f tn s stomach in time for an endoscopy if they drank a glass of water two hours before an endoscopy - say for example to take their hypertension medications and other meds? In addition, when one is on an IV for some hours, does the water (or fluid) from the IV enter the stomach, causing the stomach not to be empty if one needs to consider getting an endoscopy?
Avatar n tn I had a colonoscopy. The anesthesia didn't work even though they gave me twice the normal amount. It felt like labor. When it was over they explained that the anesthesia didn't work because 3 of the meds I take counter act it. (I'd given them the complete list twice-I can only come to the conclusion that they didn't check my meds against the anesthesia or they would have given me the alternate anesthesia.) I was in discomfort for a week.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had spinal anesthesia for a laparotomy? I was given a choice of spinal or general for my upcoming ovarian cyst open surgery? I was surprised and uninformed. Any experience? I've never had a spinal before, have had general anesthesia several times. I was told I would be kept asleep. I would not want to be awake during the surgery. Thanks!
Avatar n tn I am told that she needs to be adminstered the normal anesthesia as if she were receiving a surgery in a hospital. I understand that a cardiologist as well as the anesthesiologist should be present during the care (dental), but why specifically is laughing gas more hard on her system?
Avatar n tn for some type of medication for her nausea. It may well be due to the effect of the anesthesia or if she was given some pain medication for home use and is taking it ..... that often causes nausea in some people. i would certainly give her Dr. a call for some advice.
Avatar n tn Should an infected tooth be treated with antibiotic before extraction? Is this a judgement call by the dentist or should caution be used to reduce the risk of a puss pocket forming causing much more damage after extraction is complete? And what does it mean when the local anesthesia still doesn't numb the area after the third dose? Are there reasons that the local anesthesia would not work? Thank you.
1364139 tn?1280791344 From what I understand, from extended research on the fentanyl patch when I was on it a few years ago, the patch can lessen the effects of pain medications, anesthesia, or other medications that you may be given before, during and after surgery, or even have some other interactions...Course I am not a medical professional, but that's what I have read.
Avatar m tn But with spinal the secretions may not accumulate. With spinal anesthesia, depending on the level of injection given, below that the body is paralysed. So, the normal swallowing mechanism will be retained. Post nasal secretions will be increased on lying down, but this happens during sleep also. Moreover you will be given medications to dry out the secretions, so don't worry. And good luck with your procedure. Regards.
Avatar f tn The medicines given to you are the usual medicines given during local anesthesia administration. There is a possibility that you had a drug reaction. You should tell the anesthesiologist the reaction you had during the administration of the anesthesia so that anesthesia induction can be delivered safely and uneventful. Perhaps a different kind of anesthesia can be given to you. Take care.
Avatar m tn Another point is the use of sedation and general anesthesia. In general any elective surgery should be avoided. General anesthesia as commonly given is very toxic to the liver and can cause decompensation or liver failure in some cirrhotics. Sedation such as local anesthesia and conscious sedation are much safer. The anesthesiologist should be aware of the patient's cirrhosis and use less toxic meds and doses than a person with less liver disease or none.
Avatar f tn I work in Anesthesia as an Anesthesia Assistant. What kind of Anesthesia did you have? Just local anesthesia and sedation? How old are you? Are you taking meds? Sounds like you have Orthostatic Hypotention which explains your symptoms. I would be very surprised if anything Anesthesia related was the cause of you panic attcks. Any medications given during your procedure are metabolized and gone from your system by now. I think that the panic attacks warrant a visit to the doctor.
Avatar f tn What kind of anesthesia are patients given when they have decompression surgery for chiari malformation?
Avatar f tn Hi, Well, I could tell you not to worry, but it's a little late for that. Let's just take one little thing at a time~~ It would help if we knew what type of surgery you will be having . Your cyst is not tiny so you may be having the laparotomy.. but 1.. You will NOT wake up during the procedure. Your Anesthesiologist is right beside you and monitoring you constantly. 2.
Avatar f tn t know the answers to your questions regarding your medications, but it will be very important to tell every person you talk to from pre-anesthesia, to prep, to the surgeon, to the anesthesiologist, to your nurses about your medications (whether or not you should take them on the morning of your surgery, when the nurses will be able to give them to you after the surgery, and to make sure that they use an anesthetic and pain medications that will not interact with your other current medications.
1348686 tn?1310654243 Hey jul04, I'm not a healthcare professional, but I had one done today myself and it was a piece of cake. I was given heavy sedation so I was asleep throughout the procedure, which lasted (I think!) about 45 minutes or so (give or take). I've been under anesthesia before, but this was much more pleasant after coming to. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine!
Avatar f tn Will it interfere or cause me harm due to surgery or anesthesia? I want to know before going to the dr on Nov. 5th to see what I can do about it then.....
Avatar n tn What medications are usually prescribed prior to cataract surgery? My doctor gave me prescriptions for Zymar (0.3%), to be used 4X daily for 3 days AND Xibrom (0.09%), 2 X daily for 3 days prior to surgery. After looking on the RXlist medication information site, it says that Xibrom should be used only 24 hours prior to cataract surgery. Any longer could cause corneal adverse events......what kind of events?
Avatar n tn During my many surgeries, I was given general anesthesia and after I woke up, I was given a morphine pump. (PAC) You are able to give yourself your own medication every 10 min. as needed. Towards the end of my hospital stay, the Doctors took me off of the pump and started the oral pain medication. They started this in the hospital to make sure that I was able to handle the pain with oral medication instead of the pump. If I could withstand the oral medication then I could go home.
2094653 tn?1334267573 Good morning ladies, I went to my drs yesterday an faintly heard my babys heartbeat. I also was given 2 new medications to add to my zofran an prenatal. 212161 tn?1599427282 They usually have to intubate you (give you a breathing tube down your throat to breathe) and there are a lot more risks with general anesthesia than with just sedation. Most people who are given sedation for their colonoscopies (which is the norm) do not remember any of their colonoscopy and they have no ill effects.
Avatar f tn All surgeries are different but I was scared because I had never had surgery before. I was worried about the anesthesia, even though I had been working in the O.R. for two years by that time. You should start feeling 'back to normal'(ish) around 6 months because you'll have to go through a lot of physical therapy after your surgery. Best of luck!
