Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar f tn boceprevir is in pharmacies now telaprevir should be by the end of the month they both have the same mechanism of action ( protease inhibitors ) and are comparable in efficacy mimi that 70% is for first timers only
Avatar n tn I have wheezing, shortness of breath. Doctor has prescribed LAVOLIN inhaler - it works for a very short while and my wheezing, breathing difficulty returns back again. Can anyone please help?

880900 tn?1467270141 One additional note, regarding your history of having had “a couple of TIA’s”. It is not rare for persons with a history of DVT to have TIA’s, the cause being a communication within the heart between the left and right sides of the heart that allows clots to crossover from right to left and then go to the brain. Such a communication is called a patent foramen ovale and such is not uncommon.
Avatar f tn Another posibility is a reactive airway disease. That is really more of a collection of lung conditions where the lungs are too reactive to harmless substances. It is important to rule out other reactive airway issues to get the propper treatment. There are other conditions that cause broncho-constriction besides asthma.

26471 tn?1211936521 All true, but I think the problem with high-dose ribavirin (HDR) is at least in part microcosmic of the total basket of problems facing the average patient entering treatment today. That being all too often stuck with a GI (or even family doctor) who doesn't have the training or experience to implement more cutting edge strategies such as early and sensitive viral load testing, weight-based ribavirin for all genotypes, helper drugs -- and yes, HDR when indicated.
Avatar f tn through the lowering of vaginal pH to the physiological level of 3.8 - 4.5, anaerobic overgrowth is inhibited and the conditions for the re-growth of physiological lactobacilli flora are re-established. “ “The results of the present study show that 250 mg ascorbic acid vaginal tablets taken 6 days per month safely halves the risk of BV recurrence from 32.4% to 16.2% during a 6-month prophylactic treatment. Avatar m tn s anti-viral preclinical program, with compound designated NVP018, has generated significant data indicating that NVP018 has the potential to become an effective alternative or addition to current drugs for treating chronic hepatitis B infections. This new data will be presented at the EASL (European Association for the Study of the Liver) congress in London, in April 2014 (www.ilc-congress.eu). The results indicate that NVP018 has a dual effect against the hepatitis B virus.
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar f tn There is zero evidence that a therapy with an implausible mechanism of action, such as acupuncture claims, will do anything at all for your father. It would seem that all he is doing is worsening matters by wasting money. To acupuncture's credit, there is also no plausible way that it could make his MD worse (unless this is delaying proven therapies). There are treatments such as chemical labyrinthectomy and surgical labyrinthectomy that have strong evidence to back them.
Avatar m tn It plays many role from identifying the substance (acceptable and toxic), as defense mechanism etc. The main component of smell system is receptors known as olfactory chemoreceptor cells, which are primary neurons that project directly to the brain. There will continuous formation of new receptors esp. in adulthood. They turnover reduces in advancing age. The receptor formation and sensitivity varies from person to person.
Avatar n tn I've been noticing a lot of leg jerks/twitches and other feelings of shakiness lately. I'm a 26 yo female in good health, and I recently had a physical with blood work. I'm slightly low on iron, but otherwise everything was normal. I've been stressed out, and I drink a little bit of caffeine daily. Anyone think that the twitchiness could be due to exercise?
Avatar f tn Valproate is believed to affect the function of the neurotransmitter GABA in the human brain, making it an alternative to lithium salts in treatment of bipolar disorder. Its mechanism of action includes enhanced neurotransmission of GABA (by inhibiting GABA transaminase, which breaks down GABA). However, several other mechanisms of action in neuropsychiatric disorders have been proposed for valproic acid in recent years. *Rosenberg, G. (2007).

Avatar m tn When I consume antibiotics (like levooflaxin, ofloxacin), antiamoebics (ornidazole, metronidazole), I remain fine for the time period I consume the medicines. After end of treatment, Issues re-appear again. This is now happening very frequently (once every 2 weeks). I do not smoke, drink or use any other obnoxious drug.
Avatar m tn Because of the host cell-based antiviral mechanism of action, we expect all clades and genotypes of the investigated viruses to respond to this treatment and the likelihood of the emergence of resistant viral escape mutants to be substantially lower than with conventional antiviral treatments.
2062505 tn?1331089288 Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. While its mechanism of action has not been fully characterized, ondansetron is not a dopamine-receptor antagonist. Serotonin receptors of the 5-HT3 type are present both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the area postrema. It is not certain whether ondansetron’s antiemetic action is mediated centrally, peripherally, or in both sites.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of Campral® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.
Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar m tn Yes, I am 16 years of age, and from the USA, I got a peiece of slag that went trough my eye, but if had over 4 surgieres due to torn retnia/detachment, the good news is thay the peiec of metal missed most of the vital parts of my eye, but my eye doctor Gregory Christense, My Retnia doctor, sent me to a glacouma specialist because the Cilicon Oil that they have used is causeing me to have a little bit of optic nerve damage, its not a lot but there gana get the oil out and my pressure should subsi
Avatar f tn Hey, just wondered what kind of tests doctors ran in order to diagnose POTS? And what are the main symptoms? Is it a common thing or something doctors would overlook generally? I've been suffering with extreme fatigue and frequent fainting from the beginning of last October. Also have a slightly irregular heart beat apparently but doctors didn't seem concerned...
