If I understand the valve is a biological valve, not mechanical... and I understood when my Mitral Valve was repaired that the biological valve has a life of about 10 years.. so your husband has done well I think

I assume there is a narrowing of the orifice (valve opening) and medically referred to aorta valve stenosis. More often it is not congenital but a result of calclification that builds up and sometimes effects the leaflets (closes over the orifice) and the leaflets become stiff.
Because there is a narrowing of the valve opening there abnormal pressure in the left ventricle as there is now more resistance for the heart top pump against.
The mitral valve has only moderate stenosis so the decision of operating it at the same time that the aortic valve, will depend on the problem of the mitral valve and your age/risks for the surgery. Leaving the mitral valve for later will implicate a 3rd surgery so you has to discuss w/ your doctor and the surgeons the pros and cons.
Repair or replace is not an age issue. What is related to age and valve replacement is what type of valve would be appropriate. A biological valve would be the best choice for an older individual and is not recommended for a younger person as the expectation for the valve is less than 15 years. A mechanical valve lasts longer but requires a lifetime of taking blood thinners due to the risk of blood clots.

My husband had heart surgery 6 yrs ago and chose a mechanical valve (aorta) instead of a tissue valve. He recently had an echocardiogram which shows a narrowing of the opening in the valve and leakage around the outside. Will he require open-heart surgery again to fix this defective valve? What causes the leakage and the narrowing of the opening?
