Marinol for nausea

Common Questions and Answers about Marinol for nausea

marinol

Avatar m tn I have been treated for Chronic pain post Cancers and therapies, and I am very tolerant to any Opiates. I would like to try using Marinol (synthetic THC) for pain; it helped my pain as well as my nausea when I went through my Stem-cell Transplant. I am in Athens, GA; does anyone know of a doctor willing to prescribe this medicine for pain (when you have not been diagnosed with a cancer...yet?
Avatar m tn 5 mg (lowest-dose) marinol per day to stay out of pain. Medicare and Humana will not cover marinol for pain or BP since manufacturers have not submitted these applications to the FDA. In addition, dosage and timing are big problems... Doctors do not understand that (1) the only available form - refrigerated gel tabs - do not take effect until 2.5 hours and (2) the effects only last for another 3 hours.
Avatar n tn The problem with prescribing marinol is that many chemo patients have trouble keeping ANYTHING down. Taking a pill for nausea is not helpful if it comes right back. When you are so sick that you cannot hold down your meds, smoking a little weed can give you relief. It doesn't take much, just a couple of tokes will quell the nausea and maybe give you a bit of an appetite.
Avatar f tn I've read about some people diagnosed with ADD taking marinol as a form of medication. I was wondering what effects it would have when taken with adderall, or as a replacement for other meds. What sort of side effects, and/or lack of side effects to make other meds more effective.
Avatar f tn I'm a 58-year-old white female who has had S.L.E. for approximately 35 years. My primary manifestation is severe and debilitating nausea. I also now have heart involvement and am pacer dependent. I have an excellent gastroenterologist. He and other doctors have said that it's a very difficult case to treat. It is unusual as it is marked by very few remissions and has become drug resistant. On a typical day I will wake up with severe nausea, and it sometimes lessens after 3-4 hours.
Avatar f tn I don't think Marinol would be a replacement for any of the ms meds - mostly it will serve as a calming aid or as mentioned above to help people gain weight. It won't actually serve any neurologically protective function. My neuro when I first was dxed last month told me that there is a strong hope that an oral tablet option will be available by next fall/winter.
Avatar n tn My 30 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis after suffering vomitting, nausea, diarrhea or constipation for 5 years. She is also borderline bi-polar II. One of her big problems is she has reactions to many meds. For instance, she cannot take any antihistamines, nor phenergan, or compazine because they result in severe akathesia. She can tolerate Reglan and is on that 4 times a day and has been prescribed Zofran, which helps some.
Avatar n tn I had a CCK done and my liver and gallbladder have been checked and everything seems fine. My primary doctor has put me on Marinol because he has tried all other nausea and vomiting medicines on me and none of them worked. The Marinol has significantly slowed the vomiting. However, I don't want to settle for being on medicine and being sick all of the time. I want to find out the underlying cause of what is going on with me.
Avatar n tn your enthusiasm is very encouraging. have you read much about the marinol or marijuana materials for taking the nausea out of the picture?
Avatar m tn I have pain in both of my knees and have had a cortazone shot in my arm for pain over the last year. I continue to here that Marinol can relief pain in that manner. I do not want to smoke marijuana. I read comments from others in Las Vegas where I live they found doctors who precribe Marinol. Can you provide me the name or locations of these doctors. I tried to use my main doctor and a urologist but no luck for they are not comforable in precribing it.
Avatar m tn Marinol is just pharmaceutical MJ, and docs cannot prescribe it for w/ds. I agree with the others, ride it out. Anything you're feeling won't harm you....just just have to get through it. Wanting to turn to another drug to ease the w/ds from the first drug is how people stay stuck on the merry-go-round.
Avatar f tn I'll reply to your message as well when I get a moment, but lest I forget I wanted to toss my two cents in here. Cleveland clinic has been the best bet for me. There's a Dr. Birgisson (do NOT ask me to spell his first name from memory ... It looks Nordic, for what it's worth) who is THE guy for esophageal and that kind off upper GI issues. For stomach and lower, I'm not familiar enough with their GI department to rattle off names, but I know they have good people.
163305 tn?1333668571 There's a form of marijuana in pill form... it's called MARINOL (Dronabinol). I was put on it when I lost 40lbs as a side-effect of taking another medication. The side-effect of MARINOL, is that it gives you the munchies and MAKES you want to eat. Gained the weight back slowly, and stopped taking it. Makes me wonder why they went all-out, and went the actual marijuana route, instead of trying MARINOL first.
Avatar n tn Hi there - yes, this is a BIG side effect for me. Look at all my posts ;) they are always after midnight. I find a couple things have helped me. One, you can get Ambien prescribed which is a sleep aid. The other thing I tried which has helped the most is Marinol. This is the "pot" pills that are prescribed to cancer patients for nausea and lack of appetite. If you take it an hour before bed, you will usually fall right to sleep.
1162446 tn?1262804903 melissakay - yes, medical marijuana is available in pill form by the name of Marinol. It contains THC which is the active ingredient of the marijuana plant. Some people swear it only works for pain and/or nausea control when smoked and won't use the legal Marinol for that reason. I'll admit I tried smoking it myself years ago when I was vomiting several times a day from the worst bowel obstruction I've ever had. (Lost a couple feet of colon from that event.
Avatar n tn xanax and alprazolam are the same thing...just like tylenol and acetaminophin. you can request brand name at the pharmacy when you drop your rx off...but that doesn't mean they'll have it. brand is much more expensive and rarely dispensed so it won't be easy to find a pharmacy that has it. why would you be concerned about a urine test if this is being prescribed? many of the things you're asking are question for a doctor. for example...how to get a doctor to prescribe marinol.
338489 tn?1215558109 Has anyone who lives in Canada been prescribed Sativex, the cannabis based med? My reading shows that it is really good for numbness. Of course, can't get it here in the states. Worried we might all become junkies!
Avatar f tn They are hard to find but typically the doctor you would visit to get your MMJ license renewed would prescribe the opioids or refer you to another doctor that is MMJ Friendly. Another option is for you to ask the doctor for a prescription for Marinol...it is synthetic THC. I should mention that when my mother was dying from cancer, she said that the Marinol wasn't helping her eat, it was only the real marijuana that helped but things may be different for you. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Is Marinol pills good to use in kids who have seizures from Chiari malformation type 1
Avatar m tn I have liver cirrhosis and when I became ill, my doctor prescribed Marinol for weight gain. I had lost 85 lbs and gained 30 pounds with this treatment. My doctor discontinued the Marinol and my weight decreased. I am 6'2" tall and am considering smoking marijuana to achieve the weight gain I am comfortable with. Will this method injure my liver further or have no real effects to it?
