Avatar n tn Currently, the 2 most effective medications for peripheral neuropathy that we have available are gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica). The latter is a newer drug and is more expensive than the first. I generally tend to start with gabapentin and will switch to pregabalin if the gabapentin isn't doing the trick. The mediactions may not take away all of your symptoms, although ideally, they will dampen them considerably.
Avatar m tn Hi every one. I've been a diabetic for almost 10 yrs now and have neuropathy as well as chronic back/ neck pain. I also have some pretty severe nerve damage in my legs from my back injury and had back surgery in 2007. Any way, I take lyrica twice a day 150 mg in am & 150 mg at night, and it has really helped alot with the pain. Im also on norco for my back / neck pain, but the lyrica has been a great help to me. However it is expensive if you don't have insurance.
Avatar m tn I have severe peripheral neuropathy (PN) in both feet as a result of cancer (Waldenstrom). The cancer has been successfully treated but the PN is steadily getting worse. I tested negative on NCV and EMG. I take Lyrica and Amitriptyline. I'm on my feet for an hour a day wearing Crocs and can't wear shoes. It helps to sit with my feet up (level with my bottom) otherwise they get more painful, swollen and purple. Q: My PN seem different from how most descibe it.
Avatar n tn I cannot take ibuprofen due to kidney disease, although it was the best pain reliever. About a year ago I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. The worst pain ever. 6 months on Nortriptyline, several on alpha lipoic acid, now on Lyrica. Lyrica works! Still numb but pain relief. Questions: Concerned about kidneys and new insurance doesn't want to cover Lyrica. They want me on gabapentin.
Avatar f tn The way to go with this is THERE ARE treatments for this, including the nerve pain medicine Lyrica, I take it and have peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet, but despite feeling more comfortable, I still have numbness and some swelling. Go to a website on the subject, specifically a Peripheral Neuropathy Organization online where that's all they deal with is people who have that, and see what all they have to say about what you can do to help this thing along.

Avatar f tn Hi, my doctor just recently confirmed that I have fibromyalgia. Is the kind of pain you're talking about that you take the Lyrica for peripheral neuropathy? I know that is a common symptom of fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathy has caused me some problems. Another member told me about some supplements that do help with neuropathy.
Avatar f tn I am 2 chemos away from finishing my round of six and have developed peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet. I am on 300mg Neurontin 3 x a day and it still seems to be getting worse. The pain keeps me from walking long distances and I cannot hang my hands down; I have to keep my elbows bent. I have also tried acupuncture. I use warmth to alleviate the pain but it is only a temporary relief. Any ideas or experiences?
Avatar f tn I was told I had peripheral neuropathy due to a B12 and Vitamin D deficiency. I was worried about MS but was told I have no signs of that. They also said that it might take awhile for my symptoms to go away. The plan was to take care of the dificiencies and wean me off the meds. Frankly I am starting to get worried. Any ideas? I would appreciate any information that may help me and help me to start feeling normal again.
Avatar f tn You sound like your problem may be peripheral neuropathy. Your symptoms match up very well, and the medicine Lyrica you were given, I take it, and it should actually provide you with some relief, so please think about resuming the drug. It is given to people with neuropathy. Other things that help neuropathy are B vitamin complex and vitamin E.
Avatar m tn Excluding infections or toxic causes to the neuropathy is important, as is excluding a vascular cause (ischemic neuropathy due to poor blood flow to the extremities as occurs with peripheral vascular disease). Rheumatologic evaluation, sometimes repeated evaluations several months apart, may be necessary before a cause is found, if one can be found.
Avatar m tn Most common form is a peripheral neuropathy and occurred by deterioration in the nerve function at the limbs. It represents with symptoms of loss of sensation (or pins and needles like) in the arms, hands, legs and feet. Since there are many causes of neuropathy, hence treatment involves seeking these conditions out and correcting any underlying problem such as poor sugar control in diabetes in order to get a relief in your symptoms.
Avatar f tn Ultram is a complicated medication that has some opiate effects and greater non-opiate effects. It can become addictive in some people, but most people in my experience do not find it to be 'enticing' enough to be 'habit-forming'. Particularly if you are taking it intermittently, and not daily, it is a fine choice.
Avatar n tn Usually Neuropathy is a one way disease. It only gets worse and not better. However, if the problem persists the Dr. can increase the dosage of Neurotin to help it more. I advise going back to the Dr. to see if they will increase the prescription amount.
Avatar n tn I have osteoporosis of the right hip and osteopenia of the left hip. I have peripheral neuropathy (familial), and two bad knees.
Avatar m tn Hello, I've been a type I diabetic for over 20 years and was diagnosed with neuropathy about 5 years ago. It was mostly in my legs and feet, eventually spreading to my hands. Lately however, I've been unable to afford my Lyrica and I'm waiting for the company to respond back to my application for assistance. I've been off the medication since last August/September.
Avatar f tn I’ve done 2 years of physical therapy where we worked on plantar fasciitis, however the leg pain never lessened. I’ve gone to two neurologists. One said it seemed I had sudden peripheral neuropathy, the other said I don’t have neuropathy but “sensitivities that trigger episodes of radiated nerve pain.” My blood work came back good, no vitamin deficiency and no blood sugar issues.
Avatar n tn The best way to control hypothyroidism is by replacement of the hormone thyroxine. Peripheral neuropathy may be caused by chronic untreated hypothyroidism. Although the association between hypothyroidism and peripheral neuropathy isn't fully understood, it's known that hypothyroidism can cause fluid retention resulting in swollen tissues that exert pressure on peripheral nerves.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy (sensory)but I am experiencing numbness in my groin area (female) and also there is a patch on my head/scalp thats gone numb and my mouth area is numb as well. I have learned to live with my symptons that come along with the neuropathy but I dont know too much about MS. Has anyone else here experience these symptoms along with other symptoms of your MS? Any insight would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn This could be a separate problem with the nerves, or a primary neuropathy. This in turn can be caused by nerve root compression (from the spine), electrolyte imbalances (like potassium, calcium, etc) or from micronutrient deficiency. I suggest he'd discuss these possibilities with his doctors, and also get opinion on prescription drugs such as gabapentin or pregabalin to specifically address neuropathic type of pain. Regards.
419955 tn?1203011044 Hi kitty, Have you tried Lyrica...I have peripheral neuropathy...The lyrica gives me some relief ..I also take neurotin..I dont like the neurotn as much makes me feel weird...Both medicenes are expensive..keep in touch..
405614 tn?1329144114 If the nerve impulse was found to be abnormal out in the periphery - ie, your arm, then what you have in that area is a peripheral neuropathy. By definition problems from MS are in the spine or brain and the testing in the limb will should normal conduction. So, no, an SSEP would show that the nerve signal was already delayed when it arrived at the spine. By this testing the pain in your arm is a peripheral neuropathy.
