317787 tn?1473358451 First off, her Free T4 is very low in the range, indicating that her thyroid is not producing adequate thyroid hormones. Rule of thumb is for Free T4 to be about mid range; your sister's Free T4 is only at 13% of its range, so it's quite understandable why she has symptoms of being hypo... Unfortunately, Total T3 is considered obsolete and isn't very useful, but it, too, is lower in the range than we'd recommend...
Avatar n tn I am only addressing the thyroid levels. Which states you are hyperthyroid and T-3 toxicosis which is seen in Graves' disease. This could be the reason for your fatigue and possibly weight gain. Not all hypers lose weight. The solution for thyroid is to get treatment for the hyper side of the disease. Either RAI or ATDs. Surgery is an option with growing, hyperfunctioning nodule or thyroid cancer, which would entail more test to verify.
Avatar f tn I struggle with my weight as it is and i have heard that with a total thyroidectomy and going on synthroid weight gain is an almost certainty. Can anyone shed light on this..I am considering a partial and if its cancer having it done again. Good or bad decision?
Avatar f tn I am 55 years of age and have Hashimotos disease, my weight is low ,however despite exercise and normal eating, I cannot move weight from my lower body. I currently take 100mg of thyroxine. I am constantly hungry experince joint pains and puffiness and bloating. It is a real battle to maintain my weight. My doctor says my dosage of medication is correct and that I need not worry about the types of food I eat. This is contary to what many books say.
Avatar n tn May need to see a endocrinologist to have your thyroid checked. Symptoms of an under-active thyroid include unexplained weight gain, fatigue, slow heartbeat, constipation, dry skin and a low tolerance for cold. The stress of trying to keep up with hormone needs can cause your gland to swell and create a bump in your lower neck.
1426120 tn?1283039272 Certain medications like antidepressants cause weight gain. Polycystic ovary too causes weight gain, hence has to be ruled out by an ultrasound of abdomen. If the above causes are eliminated then you can join a weight trainer and a nutrition expert and follow their advice and lose weight under their guidance. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn this starts a vicious cycle of more insulin, more carbs and of course weight gain. You want to lower your carb intake as low as you can and lower your insulin dose accordingly. To do this you need to figure out your insulin:Carb ratio. Some doctors put their patients on set doses or sliding scales for their mealtime insulin and this also leads to weight gain. I recommend the book Using Insulin by John Walsh which teaches you to use insulin:carb ratios.
Avatar f tn Does everyone gain weight with Hashimotos and hypothyroid. It is so depressing. I am thinking on going on WW or Nutrisystem, but will I lose weight if my thyroid is still screwed up? I have low motility too when it comes to digestion too. Took the sitz test and an average person can poop out the beads in 2 days and it took 7 for me. What have other done? I am frustrated!
Avatar f tn Toni is right - you don't gain weight from the med, you gain weight from your thyroid hormones being too low. Weight gain is a classic symptom of being hypo and many people are lucky enough for the weight to come off, once their thyroid is leveled out again. Some of us have to work hard at getting it off. I'm one of the latter. I find that maintaining portion control has as much to do with losing as what you're eating.
Avatar m tn I had my levels tested when she said at 8am and my cortisol came back below range at 0.8. The range was 4.0-22.0. Could this very low level explain the weight gain? What does this low level mean?
Avatar f tn fatigue, weakness, weight gain, trouble losing weight, sensitive to cold, muscle aching and cramps, constipation, depression, memory loss, odd menstrual periods.
Avatar f tn Since you both have had thyroid tests and say they are "normal", I would love to know what the results are because some people can fall into the "normal" category on the lab report and still have hypothyroidism because some doctors (and labs) still use outdated reference ranges AND what's "normal" on the lab report, may NOT be normal for you -- your body may need different levels of thyroid hormones.

Avatar n tn Certain medications like antidepressants cause weight gain. Late night snacking and poor sleep too can cause weight gain. Polycystic ovary too causes weight gain, hence has to be ruled out by an ultrasound of abdomen. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Avatar f tn One effect of hyperthyroidism is that it increases your metabolism ergo you lost weight. Correction of the disease would probably mean you might gain some weight. But weight gain is better compared to the possible complications of hyperthroidism which includes, heart failure and liver falure and a full on thyroid storm that can pretty much kill you. i think it would be best to follow your doctors advice. If you want other options, ask your doctor about it and discuss things.
Avatar f tn 3 number it is the hyperthyroid state...
Avatar n tn Since you know you have hypothyroidism, then I would start with the assumption that the low metabolism/weight gain is due to low levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4. Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all.
