Avatar f tn We conducted a double-blind prospective clinical trial involving 36 healthy euthyroid subjects, who were randomly assigned to receive placebo (4 alfalfa capsules per day), low-dose kelp (2 kelp capsules and 2 alfalfa capsules per day), or high-dose kelp (4 kelp capsules per day) for 4 weeks. Thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH), free thyroxine, and total triiodothyronine were assessed at weeks 0, 4, and 6.
Avatar n tn one can stay below this threshold for years without triggering diagnosis- symptoms- fatigue constipation depression raised cholesterol(heart disease) brain fog apathy dry skin-eczema ARE ALL CAUSED BY IODINE DEFICIENCY. our bodies are designed to be eating fish all day. pls buy kelp or lugols iodine and spread the word. the recommended daily intake is too low-to keep people ill requiring medicines.
Avatar f tn reality is that I have never been diagnosed with thyroid problems, only 3 months ago they sent me to do some analysis of hormone levels and they said they are under the parameters q but to prevent take Kelp, my biggest problem came from low progesterone levels and high estrogen. Never tested Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab).
689528 tn?1364135841 Kelp is taken to boost iodine. By and large, we, in the USA and most of the first world (and perhaps beyond), probably get too much iodine, especially if we eat pre-processed foods or eat out a lot. Do you have thyroid symptoms? Have you had any thyroid tests?
Avatar f tn i have been on thyroid treatment for over 3yrs now and to tell you the truth i am worse now than i have ever been.I have been on 75mgs of levthyroxin which has just been put up by another 25mgs just last week,I have read the leaflet enclosed and it states that people over 50 should only be taking 50mgs.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about six weeks ago and put on 25mcg levothyroxine daily. At the time, I suspected that the vegan diet I had been following for nearly a decade had probably caused the thyroid problem, as vegan diets can be notoriously low in iodine. I asked my GP if this was possible and whether taking iodine supplements might help.
Avatar f tn I never suggest to people with thyroid disease to take kelp. It will interfere with your thyroid meds, and keep you on a roller coaster of dosages. The biggest thing with thyroid is consistency. If you keep your levels consistent, then you will feel your best. Also with kelp I would imagine you will never know an exact dosage each time that you are consuming. My advice.....don't take it. Now as far as iodine is concerned, in the form of Iodoral, etc....that is a whole different ballgame.
Avatar m tn This has still not answered my question.. I had to take radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid.. I take 1.25 mcg daily, can I take kelp also with the synthroid??? In the 80's I went on a kelp,lecithin.b6 vinegar diet and lost a lot of weight.. but I need to know if I can take kelp safely with synthroid??
Avatar m tn You should not second guess health issues. If you think it is thyroid related, you need to go for thyroid panel - TSH, FT-3, FT-4 and antibodies if test warrant. This is the only way to tell if you are thyroid. If your issues were brought on by your kelp ingestion, it may only be temper situation, then on the other hand, permanent damage might have been done. However, test are the only way to know. Good luck! GL Thyroid patient.
680767 tn?1254830575 I have been taking a Kelp supplement sense I got sick back in Oct and I have not been able to get regulated at all. I'm wondering if this is related? I'm stopping the Kelp as of today. and I'm interested to see what happens.
Avatar f tn In the future, I suggest that you get the doctor to also check free T3 and free T4, along with thyroid antibodies. Free T3 and free T4 are the active components of thyroid hormones and largely regulate metabolism and other body functions. Free T3 is the most important, since it correlates best with hypo symptoms and is four times as potent as T4. The most effective way to treat a hypo patient is to test and adjust free T3 and free T4 levels as required to alleviate symptoms.
Avatar n tn Are you abnormal in calcium levels? Thyroid disease and bone disease is linked together yet when you treat issues as one and take calcium with thyroid - usually thyroid gets blocked. You can read alot on calatonin (sp?) and see how that could help you with a bone or calcium problems along with keeping the thyroid optimal with meds too. I poo-poo kelp products. I found them very nasty and inconsistant. If your looking for quality information on iodine - read up on postassium iodide/iodine.
Avatar f tn I read somewhere that glucosamin can interfer with the absorbtion of other medicines and wondered whether it was ok to continue taking kelp and glucosamin at the same time.
Avatar n tn with blood pressure up to 178 from 120 and anxiety. I am off the medication and am taking kelp and doing yoga and exercises at the gym every day except weekends. They want to see me back in another month or so and if it is still low she will refer me to an endocrinologist. Could this problem with blood pressure elevating when on medication be anything other than an adverse reaction to the medication? I am allergic to soy..break out in a rash and Ciproflaxin..
Avatar n tn I am on special medication for thyroid, but have discovered that Kelp is recommended for thyroid as it nourishes and repairs the thyroid which controls autonomic nervous system. Recommended doseage is 10-15 tablets and then 1-2 tabs daily when stabilized. I'm also taking other herbs (cayenne, hawthorn, valerian, lecithin, ginger) for a healthy heart and arteries.
Avatar n tn I am wondering if my multivitamin that contains iodine(as sea kelp) at 100% dv OK to take with thyroid pills? I had asked my endo what supplements to stay away from and he mentioned the iron etc. but I noticed on here some say to avoid kelp. Is it ok to still take my multivitamin with my thyroid meds? Could it mess up my levels?
477837 tn?1457461992 Yep, it is often thyroid related. I woke up tonight too hot and my heat isn't even on. It's so hard to sleep when the body is acting like that. I started using just one kelp capsule each day with food. It does seem to help with the chronic constipation a little bit, but the other symptoms don't seem to be reducing. I have been chronically iodine deficient for years, so I knew that using the kelp according to the instructions was safe for me to do so.
Avatar n tn The moderate lack of iodine in the diet is usually compensated by diffuse hyperplasia (endemic goiter) of the thyroid in people aged 25 and younger. The TSH and T3and$ readings are normal at this case (no hypothyroidism). This event is common only in the iodine defficient areas (third world countries, mountain regions, etc). In such cases the iodine suppliments are reducing goiter size, but are not affecting the hormone level.
Avatar n tn s Disease, TSI antibodies trick your thyroid into producing too much hormones and so your TSH falls. The anti-thyroid drug you are taking is supposed to slow your thyroid down. What you can do as far as behavior is to not over-extend yourself until your levels look better. Pushing yourself hard will make you sick. Slow down a little until your hormone levels are close to normal. Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is common.
1619657 tn?1298859676 It seems I do not need any extra iodine as shown when I went hyper while on kelp, so I am now going to have radioactive test on my thyroid before seeing surgeon down in Hobart to discuss options. Goitre is growing and pressing on something in my throat. It is not one of the huge ones, just annoying me and giving me a gravelly voice at times. Doc says it is unlikely to shrink so surgery is an option.
Avatar m tn see a new doctor, ask for the TSH, Free T3, Free T4, all antibodies for thyroid (TPO, Tg, and TSI) Keep off the kelp till you after are tested as you may well get a false TSH and Free T4 reading. (kelp has high iodine levels and depending on how much you are taking it can affect the thyroid in the wrong way) Keep a record of your symptoms and present them to the doctor as well.
616450 tn?1228433627 Hi Ed, Although I can't answer your question about what foods to avoid or add, I find it interesting that you notice your thyroid hurting after eating dairy. Your thyroid is the only gland in the body that absorbs iodine. Before getting the radioactive iodine treatment, patients are supposed to follow a low iodine diet for a week or two beforehand, so the thyroid is starved for iodine. That way, when they ingest the pill, it will travel to any thyroid tissue in the body.
Avatar f tn I looked at human nutrition for low thyroid and it was suggested to take the B vitamins. Can I or should I give this to my dog? If so, can I give a human pill and at what dose?
Avatar m tn There is a great natural supplement for the low thyroid called "Armor" it has no side effects and is not bad for you like synthroid can be at times. Have your doctor write you a prescription for it, you will probably feel better on it. Another good thing to take for the thyroid is Iodoral Iodine, however, it is a good idea to have the doc order the Iodine Loading Test for you and then test you for iodine levels.
