Low protein senior dog food

Common Questions and Answers about Low protein senior dog food

protein

Avatar n tn I put him on the ID food for now. I would definitely be using a Senior, low protein food. Maybe adding some low sodium chicken broth to her food might help and/or the chicken and rice mixture. I would definitely get her in for a check up.
Avatar m tn At that age, I would definitely have the dog on a Senior food with lower protein and fat content. There are many good foods out there. Science Diet would NOT be my first choice. If you keep track of the dog's weight (good post ggreg), you can try the green bean diet (old dog show trick) :-) If the dog is putting on some weight, you feed their normal kibble but replace half with green beans (canned, unsalted, fresh, frozen, etc) until the dog gets back down to the desired weight.
Avatar m tn s all I can find at the time, although she usually gets some home-cooked meat or fish to add to her good dry food. She likes Pedigree. But I know it is store-bought pretty low level food. I know it's the equivalent of me eating takeout Macdonalds or something. OK as a oneoff, but no good every day. As dogs grow older they can react to things they didn't used to when they were younger, such as food additives, lack of certain essential nutrients, etc.
Avatar n tn says that because protein is metabolized in the kidneys that a low-protein diet is called for. Unfortunately, dogs must have protein or they will be malnourished. More recent studies show that low-protein diets make no difference, whereas focusing on calcium as a phosphorus reduce does help. I found it easier (and cheaper) to make my own dog food. Dark meat chicken is a great alternative to prescription food along with rice and white bread.
Avatar f tn We have an 11 old American Pit. I was feeding him two cans of dog food a day, 1 am and 1 pm. He gained 17 lbs on that diet, (what a shock that was), anyway his vet had us change to dry food, 2 c in am and 1 c in pm. That seems too little to me. Tyson is not an overly active dog. Thank you for your time.
Avatar f tn Hi Judy & welcome.......Now that your Bullie is at a Senior age, you need to think about better nutrition for him.....It's never too late! Pedigree food is a "Terrible" junk food. Full of all kinds of things that a dog has no need for and cannot process....It's really a Joke! Not your fault of course....... Good food cannot be purchased at a chain discount center or a grogery store! Check out Dogfoodanalysis (Dot) com and type in Pedigree in the search....
Avatar n tn my dog is picky and after surgery low protein diet for the rest of his life his liver doesnt process well he is on this special food that is perscription only but the dr said he can have fruit and vegi's i am looking for a recipe that might include them
Avatar n tn MY DOG HAS BLOTCHES OF FUR MISSING ON HER BACK ITS SPREADING TO HER LEGS ANY SUGGESTIONS
903476 tn?1242237037 I had a slight recall of a similar conversation in the past and just did a "google" and found: [First thing: what we typically call a "Calorie" in the world of dieting and nutrition is, scientifically speaking, a kilocalorie or kcal.] and I think in the "world of dieting" even if not successful in that area myself, or for my dog. So, when I read kcal, I just think Cal... and understand.
Avatar m tn she is taking benazapril and amlodipine bid and plavix once at nite her last she also gets ranitidine every 12 hours her latest bloodwork had her bun at 48 and creatine at 2.5 , we have her on a senior diet with low protien .
969163 tn?1281105479 Fat is not what you want on an older inactive dog. Balance carb intake with protein and you will be better off. All dog foods are pretty well balanced in this regard off the shelf. However as soon as you add potatoes and cheerios you have ONLY added carbs that will cause her insulin levels to go up and store the carb energy as fat. I would try to find a high quality canned or dry food that is - in and of itself - balanced and will be properly digested.
Avatar f tn I was very upset earlier but now am trying to find the best dog food with low protein since I do not want to buy vet brand food. Saw Wellness SuperMix Senior has 18 percent protein compared to the 40 percent protein he is eating right now that should help?
Avatar f tn Then he had the test results and the Vet prescribed Hills G/D dry food for senior dogs, an Omega 3 capsule (600mg), Aminavast (300mg twice a day) and Benazepril (10 mg) to decrease stress on the organs and kidney. Since being on this routine, only approx 5 days, he is drinking heavily, urinating constantly and he eats very little, leaving most of the food in his bowl, hating the prescription diet food. How can I know this is the best solution?
Avatar n tn My dog is 13 years old and has recently shown pain when eating food. I noticed a couple months ago he was sensitive when chewing his dry food and it looked like he could only chew on one side, so I started wetting his food so it wouldn’t be so hard for him to eat. Wetting the food seemed to work well so I continued this for a while, maybe a month or two. This worked ok until recently when he randomly would kind of yelp then run away when eating food and when just moving his mouth.
455950 tn?1208891610 Try mixing it in with the rice because he needs the carbohydrates as well as protein. Chicken and rice is fine for a couple weeks while a dog is very ill, but not something to use as a regular diet. It wouldn't hurt to give him senior vitamins at mealtimes too. I'm concerned that it's taking so long to get the lab results in. The lab my vet uses has a next-day turnaround time for things he can't test for in-house.
Avatar n tn Food allergy dermatitis can occur to any food substance in the diet, not just protein. A low protein diet is contraindicated. Your dog, if food allergic, may need a diet with a novel protein source (something your dog has never been exposed to before). A grain-free diet is also important. Since grains are high on the allergenic scale.
Avatar m tn You've gotten some good feedback, above. I'm with Misfits4me in thinking it might be helpful to have a little more specific data -- like what were you feeding when she got overweight and how much, and what does she weigh now. I would add to that, what is the goal weight for her, just so we know how much she needs to lose? I can tell you that, with one of my dogs that tends to overeat and be overweight, I have not found the weight control-type of dog foods to be helpful.
Avatar n tn The cheaper brands of dog food are made with alot of filler and less protein, that could also cause excess gas. Especially older dogs need a good quality dog food. Good Luck!
