1660289 tn?1302556798 Hi there...There's a link posted earlier that may help you get started....It's on the second page of this forum & it's titled: "Not a Question, Info. on Renal Disease". Posted on April 12th....It speaks about food for dogs with renal problems... I agree w/you.....I wouldn't do the Prescription Diets either.......Check out this post and see what you think...Come back and let me know.....Surely, we can find you a grain free food.....What is he eating now?
Avatar m tn I am definitely against using any dry food for dogs, and even more so for dogs suffering from kidney problems. Kidney dogs are already dehydrated (almost invariably so), and the long term use of dry foods (even with adequate pre-soaking) causes chronic dehydration to set in. So, my opinion only ... stop using the dry food. If you want to try canned kd foods, then that would be fine.
Avatar f tn 1. If you are someone who can carefully follow directions, buy a book that tells you how to make your own kidney diet dog foo. It is doable; my dog has chronic kidney disease, diagnosed almost 2 years ago and is doing better on home made food, which he loves & energetically eats. But it is very important that you add in the correct supplements that the author vet tells you, in addition to the food. I follow the recipe from the book Dr.
176741 tn?1295233989 My favorite commercial foods for dogs are the ones that contain no grains, low glycemic index carbohydrates approximately 25-28% protein and less than 11% fat (even less if your dog has a lot of weight to lose). The fatter the dog the more Atkin's diet-like the diet should be. There are a lot of brands out there and more formula's are literally being added daily. Inova/Evo, Wellness grain-free, and Orijin are good brands, but may be hard to find locally, but are available online.
Avatar m tn My question is in connection with foods that are recommended for kidney health. She does not like the k/d food prescribed by the vet. I am seeing conflicting information regarding chicken....is chicken breast better than dark meat chicken. My vet says chicken breast is best, but the info I see on the web for home recipes are calling for dark meat chicken. I am also trying to figure out if rice cakes (unflavored) are good or bad.
Avatar f tn t know for sure. They may have additives or sweeteners or something which are not good for dogs (Xylitol, for example is toxic for dogs) I don't know obviously, if the shakes have stuff like this in them. Hopefully someone else will post who knows. Again you could ask the vet about this. Have you tried tempting Cookie with a little boiled chicken? Or a little steamed fish? You are right you need to jump-start her appetite if possible.
Avatar n tn hi and welcome....truth is Vets know very little about nutrition. cats need protein, even now studies are finding high protein is even ok for cats with CRF. so don't you worry about getting too high, as long as all the ingredients are balanced. and they are with commercial foods, its homemade diets that you have to be careful with. I will send you two excellent websites that will answer all your questions about nutrition...
Avatar f tn It IS odd for a dog on Wellness food to poop that much. Wellness is a high quality food and highly digestible, so dogs are able to utilize much more of it as compared to, say, Kibbles and Bits. I would suggest putting your dog on a low residue diet. Low residue diets are designed to be almost completely digested so that the amount of stool is as low as possible. You can do this in a couple of ways.
Avatar f tn Kibble, not so important in canned as it usually contains much less, even no grains. Corn and Wheat are often problem foods for dogs...and often used in Kibble to hold the pieces together.
Avatar m tn This happened to my 16 year old Terrier mix, he lost his muscles mass due to a diet of low in protein. His vet prescribed a low protein dog food to protect his kidneys. This was the worst thing she could have done. I've since learned that his kidneys were not that bad for his age, and these low protein diets do nothing to protect the kidneys or cure kidney disease in dogs. He lost so much weight and lost his hair. He became very weak, and lethergic.
973741 tn?1342342773 What do you think the best foods are for weight loss? Is it about portion control or what we eat? A list of things to make and eat would be really helpful for us simpletons who have to work at making food decisions and don't want to spend too much time doing it.
793908 tn?1294705109 It'll be ok. Heart and liver are not fatty offal, they are very nutritious for a dog. Turkey in itself is not poisonous for dogs, it's just as people said above, when too much of it is given, or fatty pieces like skin etc are given in larger quantities, that there could be a problem. Like Ghilly said above, the only real problem would be if your dog had kidney disease, and protein and phosphorus had to be restricted.
612551 tn?1450022175 Of course, I would probably eliminate the kibble first, and swap for something natural - or good quality low protein tinned - but that's just me. It's good he's not licking, as that can create bad infection and open wounds when the skin starts to get inflamed. So you are doing really well with him. Westies are great characters, but also prone to being hyper sensitive.
Avatar f tn With all your knowledge of dogs food what is the one you recommend for dogs with gastro issues. The Hills ID Prescription is the first one that has kept the pancreas levels decent for the last year. He is a very healthy dog and I just want to believe it is something that is an easy fix but I will find out tomorrow. Thank you so very much for the time you took and the information you gave me. I talk to my vet about everything!
20022623 tn?1489116397 I am feeding Royal Canin Renal wet food (NOT dry) and I also supplement with a little protein (since the renal food is low protein and protein restriction is controversial in early to moderate kidney disease) and other low phosphorus foods since my dog is picky and won't eat the canned food alone. Low phosphorus is important in kidney disease.
401095 tn?1351391770 One natural antidepressant is to increase dopamine by eating protein-rich foods. such as eggs for this purpose, because they are versatile and appeal to some people who choose not to eat meat. Fish: Omega-3 fatty acids are found in seafood, especially mackerel, salmon, striped bass, rainbow trout, halibut, tuna, and sardines. These fatty acids may have many jobs in the body, including a possible role in the production of neurotransmitters.
Avatar f tn org I think they will have what you are looking for. They have good home made recipes for dogs. Your vet is right with what he is telling you. Maybe this website will offer more variety for your dog.
974371 tn?1424653129 Our list includes prescription dog food, plus many commercial low protein dog food recipes as further options for renal failure in dogs, or other conditions where a high protein dog food may not be the best choice. After this daunting exercise, we believe Dog Food Scoop is likely the best dog food resource you'll find for comparing KD dog food brands and other low protein dog food for canine kidney failure, or different dog illnesses.
Avatar f tn t say anything about being good for renal failure but it was low protein and low phosphorus, plus she ate it. She even went to her usual food area a little later looking for her food, so I offered her more and she ate that also, plus drank more water also. I only bought 2 cans since we head back to vets on Saturday for more blood work. I just want her to eat and get some energy and an appetite so we can proceed with home prepared food.
372900 tn?1315512302 There are foods for different breeds, as if they are not all dogs. There are foods for indoor cats, as if they are not all cats. Truth be told, it is marketing. Reactions to foods are such a big problem, resulting in millions spent at the vet’s office...If your companion does not have any of these issues – wonderful – let’s keep it that way as best as we can.
