1657684 tn?1307375035 Hi, Cats shouldn't eat really anything except meat - this is ideal diet. So good quality dry food, cans without veggies and rice in them, no bread, no pasta - cats don't digest carbohydrates, that's why he gets watery, smelly stools. Diet change is not going to be easy, but you should try it. I keep my fingers crossed!
Avatar n tn hi and welcome....truth is Vets know very little about nutrition. cats need protein, even now studies are finding high protein is even ok for cats with CRF. so don't you worry about getting too high, as long as all the ingredients are balanced. and they are with commercial foods, its homemade diets that you have to be careful with. I will send you two excellent websites that will answer all your questions about nutrition...
Avatar f tn t want anything to do with the low protein foods offered. What are some alternatives if any? We have a good vet, she is frustrated too. Husband and I have decided that if she doesn't want anything to do with these foods, which we have had only limited success or none with, we are going to let her enjoy the life she has left in peace and happiness. Dr agrees. Do you?
Avatar m tn Probably shouldn't give your dog any grains as grains are very hard for dogs and cats to process. And with already overworked kidneys it would probably cause more damage. I'm just going by what I have read and my own experiences. We lost lab to renal failure and I wish I knew then what I know now. It could have been avoided and he might still be here. I learned from it though and switched all my animals to a grain free kibble.
Avatar n tn Royal Canin Renal Special (RSF 26) - special means extra-taste, that was the favourite of my cats (when they existed) and of my cat that is still alive but who is not eating anymore, but she ated it long and enjoyed it. If you ever start renal food, you can't stop it (NEVER go back to normal food again even if everyone says it's better for his/her health because the kidney will be adapted to low protein and will be saturated with high protein !
Avatar f tn m sorry to hear about your kitty. The k/d canned is high in protein, low in phosphorus and low in salt. A good diet for kidney failure. I hope he will like it. Wishing you and kitty the best.
Avatar n tn We typically start with a calorie deficit for cats (when we use this formula for energy needs) of about 60 %. So this gives you about 192 kcal per day for your cat. However, it is not unusual at all to need to go to 50 % reduction in cats, which would be 180 kcal per day. (We generally do not advise going below 50 percent of needs without being under the direct supervision of your veterinarian, again because of health risks for cats).
Avatar f tn Cats are obligate carnivores and require very high amounts of protein and an Atkins type diet is really best for this. No dry food! Twice daily feedings should be enough for him. Begin with a can in the morning and a can in the afternoon or evening. Mix a bit of extra water into the canned food. The extra water may help to fill his stomach. A 1/2 tsp. of plain psyllium can also be added to the canned food and will help to fill his stomach.
Avatar f tn given their water-depletion, low protein amount, and the low biological value of the protein (plant vs animal-based) that they are comprised of. I would have to be stranded on a desert island with no other food source before I would ever consider feeding these diets to any cat in my care. Regarding hydration, I must say that I find it truly amazing when I hear about the very large numbers of cats receiving subcutaneous fluids while being maintained on a diet of dry food.
Avatar m tn re looking for the best bang for your buck food, Evo Ferret is it. Ferret.com sells it for $18.99 for a 6.6 lb bag. That sounds expensive, doesn't it? But buy a bag anyways, actually LOOK and READ the feeding instructions. Up to three lbs. gets only 1/8 cup serving ... per day!! Suddenly that seemingly small bag looks a whole lot bigger! One bag lasts my pair three months! No joke!
Avatar f tn I researched the lowest protein for canned food and have used various brands. The incessant meowing seems to me to be not really hungry but having stomach pain. Have tried antacids (crushing Zantac in recommended amount and adding to food) which seems to help some, and mixing food with rice and peas. She has gained a lot of weight. She is other wise healthy - good coat, clear bright eyes, purrs a lot, good mobility except for the weight.
Avatar f tn Measure food - ie calories in alone can give results though it may be easier if more food can be fed within that calorie restriction and less crying for food happens if the pet feels fuller. I would start with an ideal weight of 17 lbs if your cat is 28 lbs. Once your cat it getting close, change to an ideal weight of 12 -lbs. ANY improvement will help decrease the six times more likely your cat is to develop diabetes being overweight. Use the RER of 0.
Avatar n tn I too advise my clients to feed their cats mostly canned food. Cats do need high levels of protein and not very much carbohydrates. There has been a change in thinking among the veterinary profession in regards to the best diets for cats. I believe many people think feeding dry food will help keep the teeth clean.
Avatar f tn it was just the EVO beef that for some reason is lower in tyrosine, and perhaps not for all cats...just to low for certain breeds that require high doses (siamese, himalayan or solid black cats....all need higher doses) How long has he been on the antibiotic? this can also cause diarrhea or GI upset yes. I think the Merrick Cowboy Cookout is a good food.so is Nature's Variety..just check it should be the same as all cans at 78% moisture, or add a bit of water yourself...
541150 tn?1306033843 Even though this pertained to constipation the vet talked about how cats need a high protein, low fiber diet because that greatly mimics what they eat in the wild. She said she's studied nutrition in pets which is a lot more than most vets. She might be able to help you out. Anyway, you can look and see what she said to me and see if any of it applies to you or if you can use any of her suggestions. Hope that helps!
427555 tn?1267553158 Ive had to rush Zachary to the vet a few times because of this when he was younger and switching foods really helped a lot. I feed them a urinary tract food that has low protein and magnesium. Hope he continues to feel better.
1358341 tn?1282209843 I would say it could possibly be diet related..You see most kidney prescription diets are actually too low in protein, I have to disagree with professionals that still cling to the old knowledge of "low Protein" for a renal failure cat(I have read that those low protein diets cause malnutrition and muscle wasting)..
Avatar n tn He said “your cat not eating is your worst enemy. Try ‘kidney cat food’ if you like but don’t sacrifice her normal cat food for less of a’better’ one”. I can also say that at that time (which was 20 years ago) not only would she not eat the very expensive food, but none of my health cats, or the feral cats around me, would touch it either. I’m sure that food manufacturers have improved since then, but the advice is still solid gold.
921276 tn?1243631886 The best food for a cat is a mouse, fish, or bird. Cats evolved from desert ancestors, who derived all their liquid from their prey and did not have to drink. Many of the cats of the present day still don't drink enough, so the best diet for most cat's is an all canned diet or a home-made diet. Cats do not have any requirement for grains at all! Good canned brands include: Evo/Innova, Wellness, Nature's Variety, and the equivalent. Please choose grain-free varieties.
Avatar f tn 1. If you are someone who can carefully follow directions, buy a book that tells you how to make your own kidney diet dog foo. It is doable; my dog has chronic kidney disease, diagnosed almost 2 years ago and is doing better on home made food, which he loves & energetically eats. But it is very important that you add in the correct supplements that the author vet tells you, in addition to the food. I follow the recipe from the book Dr.
926462 tn?1284819011 My cat has been on a steady diet of dry cat food for several years. I was feeding her "Science Diet" and then she started to gain weight. I then switched to "Science Diet" light...she is still overweight. I don't over feed her, she eats about 1&1/2 cups per day. I also give her about 3-4 treats a day (hairball treatment). In the morning, I also give her about 1/8 cup of 2% milk, or sometimes yogurt.
Avatar f tn Hello Everyone, My Wiz had a dental/extraction and ultrasound today. The us showed significant kidney changes… as well as an enlarged or hardened pancreatic node I think. We are putting him on a bp med and maybe some chinese herbs eventually. One of his kidney values was very mildly elevated so I wanted to do the ultrasound and he has had vomiting on and off… it seemed to be hairball related, I treated that and it seems to help and sometimes food related.
Avatar f tn by Springtime Inc. (just throw on top of food for dogs, for cats, crush up with back of spoon and mix in with wet food ) and it seems to make everyone noticebly more energetic/healthier. (My 17.5 year old cats used to sleep 24/7, now they are going outside, running around the house, chasing each other, etc...
