Avatar f tn Epikacin is a calcium based agent labelled to promote elimination of excess blood phosphorus associated with canine kidney failure. Unfortunately excess calcium is usually also a result of kidney failure which is why Epikacin has been replaced by Aluminum hydroxide. Aluminum hydroxide is now the agent of choice to bind and remove excess phosphorus from the blood of dogs and cats in kidney failure.

793908 tn?1294705109 high protein/low fat/low fibre/low purine. Something like fish, rabbit, green tripe, might be useful if this were the case. Now, considering your dog has excess protein, this doesn't figure really.... So do try and post your question on the "Ask a Vet" forum. You will eventually get through, even if you have to keep trying. One of the vets there might be able to help you.
Avatar n tn You might be able to do subcutaneous fluids and kidney diet. Low phosphorus, low protein. My dog was in same situation but he started eating and drinking again but minimal. Vet says we only have weeks to enjoy him. Good luck. So sorry also. They are like family.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have kidney failure do to diabetes. What kinds of foods or supplements will help or hurt my kidneys? I've heard that co q10 is benefical. Any help would be beneficial!
Avatar f tn bladder or ureteral obstruction all can cause decreasing kidney function. You may try taking a diet low in animal protein and repeat the tests after a month or so. For more queries and assistance visit a nephrologist.Hope it helps. Best luck and kind regards!
Avatar n tn says that because protein is metabolized in the kidneys that a low-protein diet is called for. Unfortunately, dogs must have protein or they will be malnourished. More recent studies show that low-protein diets make no difference, whereas focusing on calcium as a phosphorus reduce does help. I found it easier (and cheaper) to make my own dog food. Dark meat chicken is a great alternative to prescription food along with rice and white bread.
Avatar m tn Was your potassium high on the last lab work you had done? Talk to your Dr to see if you need to make any diet adjustments. Also ask if a low protein diet might be beneficial for you at stage 3. FYI if you were dehydrated at the time of your last lab work, your GFR will be lower the normal/usual. If you don't already see nephrologist ask your primary Dr to refer you to one.
Avatar f tn Hello, I just stumbled upon this group while continuing my week long research into kidney failure. My dog Blu (an english setter) was diagnosed with kidney failure about 10 days ago. His Creatinine level was a 7 and his BUN was 111, so he was admitted and spent 4 days on IV fluids in the hospital. After the fluids his Creatinine level was down to about a 6 but his BUN was up to a bit (I don't remember the exact number) and he was also anemic.

Avatar f tn fist thing is too get the doc to check diet .she should possibly be on kidney diet not the diabetic diet the 2 diets do not compliment each other.this is what happened to me i have stage3 kidney failure and type 2 diabetes. if i eat the diabetic diet my renal # go all to **** to much protein in the diabetic diet.try and get her to do some exercise .i know that can be hard but i have lost 70 lbs and am still chunky.
Avatar f tn m sorry to hear about your kitty. The k/d canned is high in protein, low in phosphorus and low in salt. A good diet for kidney failure. I hope he will like it. Wishing you and kitty the best.
Avatar f tn I lost my dog Chica to kidney failure this past January. They were just flat worn out - no other disease process like lyme or addison's disease as a cause. You're doing everything right. We also tried the Azodyl (VERY expensive stuff) and it really didn't do much good. What helped the most were the calcium supplements. We just gave her regular Tums twice a day. Calcium binds with phosphorus and sweeps it out of the body.
Avatar n tn It is my experience they should ONLY be on a strict diet of prescription food specifically formulated for this disease that is low in protein (steak) and phosphorus. If not, PLEASE call your vet asap and go over this... I know you wouldn't want to exacerbate the problem. Good luck, and enjoy to the fullest the rest of the time you have with her.
541196 tn?1293552936 Hi there, I am hoping someone can help me with tying some symptoms and tests together so I can talk to my dr. who is already overwhelmed by me. I have been having reoccuring kidney/flank pain that last a week or more. Dr. is never sure if it's a kidney infection or kidney stone or something else. Urine test shows presence of blood AND protien. Urine is cloudy off and on when pain is present and often when pain is not present as well. I am 31 years old. Female.
Avatar f tn I hope you find it helpful somehow, and blessings for you and your dog - Blu Stage 3 kidney disease is one of the final stages of canine kidney disease, in which your dog will begin showing symptoms of kidney failure. Canine kidney disease occurs when, for whatever reason, your dog's kidneys are not doing their job of removing toxins from the blood efficiently. Often, by the time kidney disease reaches stage 3, kidney damage cannot be reversed.
Avatar n tn Causes of leuconychia are trauma to the nail, zinc deficiency, hypoalbuminaemia (low albumin), which is caused by the nephrotic syndrome (a form of kidney failure), liver failure, protein malabsorption and protein-losing enteropathies. My sincere advice is to consult a physician and get all these possibilities evaluated. I hope it helps. Take care and God bless.

Avatar m tn Do you think a low protein diet can stabilize a patient with stage four kidney disease? I have had stage 4 kidney disease for almost five years. I have maintained a creatinine level of 2.9 through diet. I watch my potassium, under 2,000 mg & have stopped eating animal protein. I still eat eggs & cheese but other than that no dairy. I think it is a small price to pay to avoid a kidney transplant. My weight is stable under this regimen after years of yo yo dieting.
Avatar f tn Assuming it IS CKD, then it is at a very early stage and a restricted low-protein diet is certainly not necessary. Lowing phosphorus in the diet cannot do any harm, so this is worth pursuing - but do we know whether phosphorus is abnormally high in the blood? What do the blood results say? It is certainly not worth starting a binder at this early stage just yet. Frankly, any vet that advises a DRY DOG FOOD for dogs that have or may have kidney disease is very bad.
