Common Questions and Answers about Low protein diet high protein diets

protein

Avatar n tn Higher protein diets (low carbohydrate diets) are a good way to lose body fat, but often are higher in fat. Fat is often high in calories, but you can chose healthier fats. So if you would consider a high protein diet, you would almost have to forget about a caloric intake.
Avatar f tn You can find out what percentage of protein is in the food that you are feeding and ask your vet if it is adequate or too high. Dogs are omnivores and do not need primarily meat diets and these high protein diets. I don't know that numbers off the top of my head, but you can probably find it online somewhere.
Avatar m tn Do you think a low protein diet can stabilize a patient with stage four kidney disease? I have had stage 4 kidney disease for almost five years. I have maintained a creatinine level of 2.9 through diet. I watch my potassium, under 2,000 mg & have stopped eating animal protein. I still eat eggs & cheese but other than that no dairy. I think it is a small price to pay to avoid a kidney transplant. My weight is stable under this regimen after years of yo yo dieting.
Avatar m tn For weeks I had really bad chronic abdominal pain on my right side. I couldn't laugh it hurt so bad. Then I had a MRI they said they saw stool. Now I went to the plasma center my protein levels were high so I couldn't give blood. They say my protein was high because fatty foods. Is this reason I feel tired and don't have regular periods, breast milk dried?
707563 tn?1626361905 Nuts and fruits are definitely not too cheap depending, nor is a paleo diet high in vegetables and fruits. It's high in protein, mostly animal protein. Now, there is no one paleo diet -- this is a collection of diets that are a marketing scheme, not anything based on reality or science. The theory behind these diets is that prehistoric peoples -- the paleo part -- ate mostly protein. But of course they ate mostly plant food, because animals were very hard to catch.
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.
Avatar f tn This is going to really get Gymdandee going, which is fun, but there's no such thing as the Paleo diet. It's made up by people trying to make money. I don't know if there are any long-term studies that would give some idea how well it works for health and long-term weight loss, but nobody in the world eats like that naturally and nobody ever did. Certainly no "paleo" people. And "paleo" diets aren't all the same.
Avatar f tn Every time researchers dig into this, they still come up the same place -- the societies with the healthiest, longest-lived, and least obese people eat a diet high in veggies, fruits, grains, and moderate amounts of animal protein. Americans in general eat pretty high protein diets to begin with, though the protein has traditionally been high fat pork and beef.
Avatar n tn I have recently started to feed my (16 year-old) cat a high protein diet (Orijen), devoid of all carbs, hoping to stay away from diabetes that way. Now the vet tells me that's a bad idea because a high protein level in food (anything over 40%) leads to the production of urea and actually harms the cat's kidneys. I am very confused. My cat is healthy, but which is the right food composition to keep it that way?
793908 tn?1294705109 high protein/low fat/low fibre/low purine. Something like fish, rabbit, green tripe, might be useful if this were the case. Now, considering your dog has excess protein, this doesn't figure really.... So do try and post your question on the "Ask a Vet" forum. You will eventually get through, even if you have to keep trying. One of the vets there might be able to help you.
Avatar f tn Food, in other words, is way more complex than any diet recognizes but if you want to do low carb eat high protein foods. These would include, again, nuts, seeds, legumes, and animal foods.
Avatar n tn Low carb diets have been shown to be unhealthy long-term. Veggies are all carbs. Fruits are carbs. Complex carbs such as whole grains are the best source of long-term energy. Too much protein, especially animal protein, can cause kidney problems and is linked to a higher rate of cardiovascular disease.
Avatar n tn t say what you mean by a low carb diet. I assume you mean a high protein diet, but those diets have very little clinical evidence behind them -- for most of history the only people who ate a high protein diet were those who settled in places where plant food didn't grow. They got used to it but didn't live very long, either. When they were conquered, though, and fed a lot of grains, many got diabetes.
Avatar f tn Follow a low protein, high carbohydrate diet; minimize consumption of foods of animal origin. Eliminate milk and milk products. Avoid all polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening and products made with partially hydrogenated oils Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating more cold-water fish, walnuts or freshly ground flaxseeds. You may also want to consider taking a fish oil supplement to help keep your protein intake low.
Avatar n tn There are thousands of good books out there on healthy eating if you wish to experiment yourself, running the gamut from macrobiotics and vegetarian to diets such as the above running high on animal protein and low on grains. You can also see a holistic nutritionist if you require individual guidance. And exercise is essential. Good luck.
Avatar m tn A low carb diet like Atkins is one great way to reduce body fat, and because of the high protein, you wont lose muscle. However you can use any other type of high protein diet plan, as long as you keep total calories in control.
Avatar f tn As with the hepatitis diet described above, people with cirrhosis need a high-calorie, high-protein diet. In addition, with cirrhosis, foods that are high in sodium and ammonia need to be avoided. Table 2 identifies ammonia- and sodium-containing foods. TABLE 2.
Avatar f tn all the high protein diets, and there have been a lot of them over the last several decades -- and I spent 18 years managing health food stores and talking to the people who wrote those books and discussing them with my customers -- are pretty similar. Start out with a lot of protein, then eat a high protein diet for the rest of your life, although you do get to add in more veggies and other carbs as you go along.
Avatar f tn Depends on the type of fat, actually. The basic diet that still tops out all long-term studies for health and success is to eat a diet high in veggies, some fruits, whole grains, and protein mostly not in animal form other than fish. You can eat anything occasionally, but this has been the recommended diet forever. All other diets are fad diets, but do help you lose weight more quickly.
Avatar f tn Researchers put a group of subjects with high blood pressure and less-than-ideal cholesterol, and tested the impact of adding more protein to their diets. No one was allowed to gain or lose weight during the test, so any changes couldn’t be chalked up to the benefits of dropping a few pounds. Some subjects ate a diet with 18 percent of their total calories coming from protein, which is pretty close to the USDA’s recommended amount. A second group upped their protein intake to 28 percent.
1415174 tn?1453243103 I have been on a very low fat, whole plant based diet for the last 2 years. This is after much reading and now I can't go back to eating the fatty western diet. I don't even care for it. It is interesting how the taste buds change fairly quickly even after a long time of having a bad diet. There is so much literature out there that shows how bad it is to eat a high fat diet and too much meat. Yet a lot of people are on the Paleo diet including some friends. It is very acidic.
Avatar n tn Here's my take, for what it's worth. Calories aren't a very good guide to weight -- they're a factor but how you metabolize your food is more important. Also realize that most of the people in the world who have been studied for having the healthiest lives eat a lot of carbs -- they aren't on high protein diets. We all know that vegetables are the healthiest foods and should make up the largest portion of our diets, but they are all carbs.
Avatar n tn Hey everybody... I currently eat a diet comprised of 30-35% protein, 45-50% carbs, and less than 20% fats. All toll, I consumer 2,800 calories a day to maintain my current weight of 108 lbs. at 5'4" (I've always been on the thin side, I'm a competitive Irish Dancer and Distance Runner). I want to start eating more fats and less protein... because it's very difficult to eat THAT much protein on a daily basis!
Avatar n tn And you might not be a person who does well on a high-protein diet -- you need more acid production to digest protein, and people aren't all the same. So again, what are you eating and how does it differ from what you were eating?
