Common Questions and Answers about Low carb vs low glycemic

carb

Monster I eat hi carb foods, or low carb foods, and my blood sugar does not come down when I eat the low carbs, it stays in the 130-140 range even then. I eat whole wheat bread, and sometimes do go to hi carb foods, and then it peaks up in the hi 160's. I am on Trajenta, have lost 19 lbs, and walk 3-4 times a week. Recently I had two injections of steroids, but it was two weeks ago, so I doubt that is the cause.
Avatar m tn That seems to make sense, but from what I’ve found on multiple Web sites, Uncle Ben’s Original Parboiled rice has a much lower Glycemic Load than brown rice (14 vs. 18). Uncle Ben’s Original Parboiled rice is White Rice. Also, from what I’ve read on multiple sites, pumpernickel bread has a lower Glycemic Load count than whole grain breads (5 vs. 9). Pumpernickel is not a “whole grain” bread.

1756367 tn?1400884364 The Atkins diet is just one example of a low carb diet. It is perhaps the best known because it is the first low carb diet that caused a media sensation in the 1970s and 80s. Against popular medical advice that stated that we should cut fats and proteins, Atkins advocated a diet rich with proteins and fats and very few carbs. There are now many other popular low carb diets available - many are very similar to Atkins.
Avatar m tn This is made up of heart healthy foods like whole grains, and legumes, as well as low glycemic index foods as suggested above. Ex. Instead of jasmine rise which would impact my glucose in the same manner if not worse than straight sugar, I use a lower glycemic rice-basmati-so as to not raise my BG so high. I also have adjusted my carb amounts to match how my sugars rise and fall throughout the day due to my natural body rhythm. Many folks find this to be helpful to them.
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.
Avatar m tn These diets are low carbohydrate diets. Eating low carb avoids the constant stimulation of insulin. The first few weeks of the diet help in getting rid of insulin resistance. Many people say goodbye to their medications on this diet. Since you are on medication, you MUST talk with your doctor about going on any diet. Read up on the diet first and collect recipes. Don't jump into it without being prepared.
5747555 tn?1408727657 Also remember that vegetables are all carbs, so the notion of low carb diets is misleading -- what you really want to do is eat low on the glycemic index and eat what you digest well, but saying all fruit except the bitter ones is bad for you is probably going overboard unless you eat too much of them.
9714743 tn?1466703906 A board certified endocrinologist highly recommends food that are in the low glycemic index range. Not enough time to explain the glycemic index except the lower the range the less spiking of blood sugar. A food that is 50 or lower should be okay to eat. There are sites and books. One I bought and read is the "Low GI handbook" Includes charts and recipes. Good luck to you.
Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
687527 tn?1227108766 Sweet potatoes are a carb but are actually low on the glycemic index so are actually really good for you. If you eat white bread, switch to wheat. Just a thought that may help you since it sounds like your levels are all over the place.
Avatar f tn Also, eliminate as much unnecessary sugars from your diets, or limit them to infrequent treats. Find fruits that are low-glycemic options. Kick high-fructose corn syrup out for good! Google low-glycemic foods for more info. Also, you can spread your meals out a bit as well...snack occasionally on things like nuts or veggies. This will help keep your blood sugars/glucose levels more steady. In fact, this particular diet it really great for anyone pregnant.
Avatar m tn Also be aware that recommendations for healthy lifestyle change over time. However, I think that low carb eating (Low carb, moderate protein, higher fat) is definitely the way to go in diabetes where, after all, you have a defect in carbohydrate metabolism. Way of eating may be "paleo" or 'Primal" if you want names.... amount of carb per meal is probably 15 - 50 g and mostly coming from non-starchy vegetables (no grains and very minimal sweet fruit). Hope this helps.
Avatar m tn Barb, I was on low-carb diet for a long time, but recently I found out that for many people like me, eating a low-carb diet may weaken the thyroid or even cause hypothyroid. If you google "low carb diet and low thyroid", you will see that eating "safe" carbs like sweet potatoes or rice will help out your thyroid a lot. http://chriskresser.
Avatar n tn So diabetics need to be aware of the glycemic index factor of all that we eat or drink as well as the carb content. Sugars of different types alone are not the only factors in how long it takes to digest the food or drink. Fat content is also a big factor. So a candy bar, for instance, while having much more sugar than a glass of orange juice, also contains fat which slows down the digestion rate.
1054985 tn?1257173275 I was eating low carb when I was dx'd. I wondered if it was the diet that cause my Optic Neuritis! That was before I understood ON. I am back on low carb just to try and take care some of the bloating I have trouble with. I figured out if I give my injection in my leg rather than my stomach it helps some. At least my tummy is not sore!
159619 tn?1707018272 Well I can tell you that low carb is the way to go, but no carb is do right dangerous. Sensible eating and exercise is the only way to control the diabetes without the use of insulin. I am starting my 14th year of Type 2. I have read a lot of books on curing and reversing diabetes but have found nothing that will do that. I have changed my diet and decreased my portions to the point I feel like i am starving.
Avatar m tn Hello, It is not correct that she cannot eat after the correction (the correction should have corrected for the high sugar), however, you will need to dose her insulin based on the carbs she eats for dinner. Please follow the Drs advice. Are you following a lower carb diet with your daughter? A high carb diet can make blood sugars very hard to control (and need lots of insulin).
Avatar f tn When you say a good diet, what do you mean? Low fat, high complex carbs? Or Low carb, high healthy fats. the second is the correct diet to address prediabetes (Paleo eating approach).
