Lovenox vs coumadin in cancer

Common Questions and Answers about Lovenox vs coumadin in cancer

lovenox

1569985 tn?1328247482 Thanks Jerry for sharing your experience. It makes me feel a little less frantic:) I hate these tests, but the "grown-up" part of my brain tells me I need to do it. The "Little Kid" part of my brain is saying, "You're going to do WHAT???" Lol! I have an excellent gastroenterologist and I know she knows what she's doing. There is colon cancer in my family, and I am also a cancer survior, so I know I need to do it.
Avatar m tn I do have to admit, I had a tough time with the very first shot. As you know, you drop coumadin and start Lovenox (which is a lower molecular weight heparin). My first kit came with a book and a DVD telling my excaty what to do. I just piched up my belly just to the side of my belly button and pushed in the needle. Remember to switch sides with each injection. After the first injection, it is much easier to do. The shots do not hurt. The needles are very small in diameter.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed Lovenox post ablation also Coumadin. After 8 days on Lovenox I was told to stop using it as my INR was 3.8. My Lovenox prescription was for 12 days. Now just on Coumadin 5mg daily and INR has come down to 3. If you cannot tolerate Coumadin you may be "stuck" with Lovenox because of it's ability as an anticoagulant.
Avatar n tn The night of the day of the procedure I had, I restarted the Coumadin, and the following day after the surgery used Lovenox for 2 days giving the Coumadin time to begin building back up again. Speak with your husband's cardiologist who can oversee this for you.
Avatar n tn According to my Dr. many women with Ovarian Cancer develop bloot clots. Be glad she is not on Lovenox and having to give herself shots in her tummy daily. For 4 shots, it is $1200, not covered by my insurance. I was in bed so much after Doxil also and should have been wearing the compression socks to prevent blood clots. I have not been on hormone therapy. I am on the shots and Coumadin (Warfarin).
Avatar n tn If you are only been seen in a coumadin clinic, then see a hematologist. Its likely you can do heparin while you consider a transition to another med. Lovenox is another blood thinner. Both need close monitoring just like coumadin. Not sure what side effects he is having? Lovenox is a general blood level that needs to be achieved and is injected 12hrly and is pre packaged so no drawing up to do.
Avatar m tn After the biopsy you go back to the warfarin. I take coumadin and had to do this a few times with no problems. The lovenox is typically self injected with a syringe and is usually administered in the abdominal area. Trust me it sounds a lot worse than it is. The first time is tricky but in my case after I did it I laughed that I worried one second over it. You just squeeze a little fold of skin also the needles are very thin.
Avatar n tn Coumadin and Plavix are both anti-platelet agents as well as aspirin. The most widely studied and prescribed antiplatelet agent for the prevention of stroke and other serious vascular events among high vascular risk patients is aspirin. I take aspirin daily prior to CHF.. Plavix and aspirin for preventing stroke and other serious vascular events in high vascular risk patients.
598654 tn?1330217159 d get a second opinion on having to take coumadin for the rest of your life and maybe even a 3rd. The Lovenox and heparin do not cross into the placenta to the baby but coumadin does. I really hope you find this helpful. I've had a long 2 pregnancies, therefore chose not to have more children, but having the Factor 5, you can still definately have perfectly happy healthy children.
Avatar f tn Which brings up the question, was the result even correct? If you have been in range for a long time on a stable dose of coumadin, then what the heck happened to drop you down to the same INR as someone who is not even on coumadin at all? I would want to know either how my INR got so low, or if there is no known reason, was it a false result? Lab errors do happen.
Avatar n tn I was given Lovenox and cumiden for a leg blood clot for six days. After the sixth day I was told to no longer take any of the medications. I experienced headaches. I went to the hospital for blood work and a cat scan. All turned up well. My blood reading was INR 1.83 and pro time 21.7. I am now experiencing lack of energy, slight fever. What can I do? I am taking 2 mg of cumiden at this time (as of yesterday).
Avatar n tn HI, I can't speak to the overarching issue...that is something for a doc to discuss w/ you certainly. However, I had a very large DVT that stretched from my groin to my knee in my last pregnancy (he's 6.5 now) and am pregnant again. You won't likely be on Coumadin during pregnancy (I'm guessing) but they'll switch you to Heparin or Lovenox (I'm on Lovenox).
Avatar f tn I was treated with Lovenox and Coumadin and discharged on Xarelto. Does the clot in my heart still pose a threat to my health. I have been on Xarelto for about four days. I was also wondering if I should consider a clotting disorder since I had a blood clot 10 years ago in my leg. I am 57 years old and do not have any other problems with my heart such as A-fib. The only symptom I had was mild shortness of breath. The clots were discovered as an incidental finding on another test.
Avatar n tn I'm on Coumadin and just found out yesterday that I am pregnant. I know that there is danger of miscarriage, birth defects, etc. I really need to hear some true stories right now. Good and bad. Anyone have any real cases they can discuss with me?
Avatar f tn Also if any type of surgery is required, such as a colonoscopy, then you have to be bridged with Lovenox injections while off coumadin. These have to be injected in the stomach twice a day. Not really painful but I bruise really bad from them. But to answer your question....I will have a mechanical valve again when I have surgery for the aneurysm. Hopefully that will be my last one. Good luck and God bless.
572651 tn?1530999357 t think of a clot. Anyway, I am resting comfortably in the hospital, started on Coumadin and having to do lovenox injections until my clotting is stable. For once I would be much happier if this was due to my MS. Doctor says I isn't go home tomorrow, but could be longer. We'll see.... I will be scarce for a while.
Avatar n tn I had a blood clot in October and I've been on coumadin ever since. When I was in the hospital for the blood clot, they made me stop my birth control pills. It took forever to get an appointment with my gyno to discuss new birth control treatment, and once we found one, it has taken another 4 weeks to get it in from the pharmacy. I went yesterday to get my birth control under way and I took a prego test before getting started. It was positive.
770426 tn?1235061489 I was on Coumadin for 2 months preprocedure and then 3 days before stopped and gave my self shots of Lovenox. Then I have taken the Coumadin for up to 3 mos after the ablation. Bllod thinners made me do nothing different in my life at all.
Avatar n tn d get a second opinion on having to take coumadin for the rest of your life and maybe even a 3rd. The Lovenox and heparin do not cross into the placenta to the baby but coumadin does. Avatar n tn Just read your post....I have been on coumadin for 25 years due to a MVR in 1986. Now I have to have the valve replaced Feb. 8 due to calcium buildup and an aortic anuerysm repaired. I HATE coumadin...I had 55 protimes last year so over 25 years I have done protimes many, many times. The INR will not stay regulated and I have been on Lovenox injections numberous times. Therefore, I am seriously considering having a tssue valve instead of a mechanical valve this time.
Avatar f tn Sorry you are having all this trouble. I, Like Jerry am on coumadin and stay in the theraputic range of 2-3 with a 5mg tab a day. Are you positive it's 20 mg and not 2 mg? Especially when you add the lovenox shots. I know there is a certain % of people who can't do the coumadin because of erratic levels. You might check out the dtails on that to see if you might fall into that group. Are you still walking 2-3 mi a day? Did the Dr put you on a beta-blocker or any other heart meds?
1415174 tn?1453243103 I went to the doctor and they did an ultrasound and found a blood clot. They put me on Coumadin/warfarin and Lovenox injections until I get to the right dose of coumadin (which should be by this weekend). I was told that coumadin does not remove or breakup the clot it just prevents it from going to the lung/heart. But my question is when does the swelling from the clot go down and how does the body break it up or remove it on its own? And, how long will this take (approximately).
Avatar n tn The concern is bleeding at the catheter entry sites and in my case I waited a short time in the recovery room while the Haparin dissipated before the catheters were pulled. My doctor (EP) provided a very specific schedule of when to stop Metoprol and Rythmol and your father should also have received this information. It may be worth checking with the doctor if there is any question.
Avatar f tn Hi Amanda - I'd answered your question elsewhere but it looks like I got answers to some of my questions here, regarding the birth control and one condition combining with the other to cause the stroke. I was just reading up on Lovenox on Wikipedia and it listed situations where Lovenox and aspirin are used together to treat certain heart-related problems.
Avatar n tn Every scan that has been run reveal no DVT. I have been placed on Lovenox indefinitely and had an IVC filter put in (even though they are not sure where the emboli are coming from). Are there any other tests I can inquire about? Is it common to have a PE with no evidence of a DVT? Am I realisticly looking at Lovenox for the rest of my life? I am a 32 year old male with no prior history and according to the doctors in good health.
Avatar f tn ve had pulmonary embolism before I was pregnant. I had 3 clots in one lung and two in the other. It was quite painful and I was treated with warfarin/coumadin pills and eventually the clots dissolved. Warfarin is NOT to be taken when pregnant because it will effect the baby so Lovenox/ heparin shots are often prescribed seeing as it is faster acting and won't reach the baby.
Avatar f tn cons regarding taking coumadin vs. aspirin for paroxysmal atrial fib. rate is controlled 90% of the time with digoxin and cardizem. This discussion is related to Coumadin Guidelines.
645220 tn?1233764146 I took lovenox for 2 months because i got a blood clot in my left calf from taking birth control pills, and then had to be on coumadin for another 6 months of anticoagulation. In addition i am a nurse and have to give lovenox injections all the time and teach people how to do their own injections. I am not an OB nurse and I am curious why your are taking lovenox during your pregnancy, do you have a previous clotting issue with your pregnancies?
