Lovenox and coumadin

Common Questions and Answers about Lovenox and coumadin

lovenox

Avatar m tn I do have to admit, I had a tough time with the very first shot. As you know, you drop coumadin and start Lovenox (which is a lower molecular weight heparin). My first kit came with a book and a DVD telling my excaty what to do. I just piched up my belly just to the side of my belly button and pushed in the needle. Remember to switch sides with each injection. After the first injection, it is much easier to do. The shots do not hurt. The needles are very small in diameter.
Avatar f tn My Lovenox prescription was for 12 days. Now just on Coumadin 5mg daily and INR has come down to 3. If you cannot tolerate Coumadin you may be "stuck" with Lovenox because of it's ability as an anticoagulant.
Avatar n tn Sectral, coumadin, or lovenox are associated with elevated liver enzymes. Niasan (Niaspan) and tarka (verapamil) can increased liver enzymes. I really can't advise you on stopping medications, you should talk to your doctors about that one but niacin and verapamil can increase liver enzymes and are worth asking your doctor about. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn The night of the day of the procedure I had, I restarted the Coumadin, and the following day after the surgery used Lovenox for 2 days giving the Coumadin time to begin building back up again. Speak with your husband's cardiologist who can oversee this for you.
598654 tn?1330217159 d get a second opinion on having to take coumadin for the rest of your life and maybe even a 3rd. The Lovenox and heparin do not cross into the placenta to the baby but coumadin does. I really hope you find this helpful. I've had a long 2 pregnancies, therefore chose not to have more children, but having the Factor 5, you can still definately have perfectly happy healthy children.
Avatar n tn I would like to have another child, how significant are the risks to my health during a pregnancy and delivery. Will coumadin hurt the fetus and if so are there alternatives during the pregnancy.
1569985 tn?1328247482 m sure they will tell you it is ok, and to resume your normal dosage after the procedure. Warfarin and Coumadin have really long half lives, so they take a while to be effected in the body. It will take a week or so to get back to your therapeutic range, but you should be ok as long as you are still following your diet and not taking any other medications that can interfere. Good for you having this procedure done. I like to see people keeping up with their screens. I am proud of you.
Avatar n tn my husband is 51 years old and has had by-pass surgery, and has a mechanical valve and is having sever side effects from the coumadin. We need a safe alternative for coumadin without compromising his health. We are looking for a doctor to help support this transition. We reside in PA. and hope to find a medical doctor that will monitor this change, what is your opinion?
Avatar n tn I was given Lovenox and cumiden for a leg blood clot for six days. After the sixth day I was told to no longer take any of the medications. I experienced headaches. I went to the hospital for blood work and a cat scan. All turned up well. My blood reading was INR 1.83 and pro time 21.7. I am now experiencing lack of energy, slight fever. What can I do? I am taking 2 mg of cumiden at this time (as of yesterday).
Avatar f tn t take Lovenox. I use one called Arixtra, when I need it. Both Lovenox and Arixtra are shots that you give yourself at home. Arixtra is a once-a-day injection; I'm not sure if Lovenox is given once a day or twice a day. A doctor or nurse can show you how to give yourself the shots. The injection will make a blue spot under your skin that looks like a bruise, but it is not painful.
770426 tn?1235061489 I was on Coumadin for 2 months preprocedure and then 3 days before stopped and gave my self shots of Lovenox. Then I have taken the Coumadin for up to 3 mos after the ablation. Bllod thinners made me do nothing different in my life at all.
Avatar n tn I'm on Coumadin and just found out yesterday that I am pregnant. I know that there is danger of miscarriage, birth defects, etc. I really need to hear some true stories right now. Good and bad. Anyone have any real cases they can discuss with me?
Avatar f tn I was treated with Lovenox and Coumadin and discharged on Xarelto. Does the clot in my heart still pose a threat to my health. I have been on Xarelto for about four days. I was also wondering if I should consider a clotting disorder since I had a blood clot 10 years ago in my leg. I am 57 years old and do not have any other problems with my heart such as A-fib. The only symptom I had was mild shortness of breath. The clots were discovered as an incidental finding on another test.
Avatar f tn 0 which is great but this is very rare. I have had to take Lovenox injections and coumadin to try to get it high enough. One time, due to some meds I was on, my INR was over 10 so I had to take a vitamin k pill which made it too low. I strictly go by the guidelines for taking coumadin but I really believe my metabolism causes a lot of my problems. My mom is in a nursing home and has the same problem. She had a St. Jude valve in 1991.
572651 tn?1530999357 t think of a clot. Anyway, I am resting comfortably in the hospital, started on Coumadin and having to do lovenox injections until my clotting is stable. For once I would be much happier if this was due to my MS. Doctor says I isn't go home tomorrow, but could be longer. We'll see.... I will be scarce for a while.
Avatar n tn I had a blood clot in October and I've been on coumadin ever since. When I was in the hospital for the blood clot, they made me stop my birth control pills. It took forever to get an appointment with my gyno to discuss new birth control treatment, and once we found one, it has taken another 4 weeks to get it in from the pharmacy. I went yesterday to get my birth control under way and I took a prego test before getting started. It was positive.
Avatar n tn According to my Dr. many women with Ovarian Cancer develop bloot clots. Be glad she is not on Lovenox and having to give herself shots in her tummy daily. For 4 shots, it is $1200, not covered by my insurance. I was in bed so much after Doxil also and should have been wearing the compression socks to prevent blood clots. I have not been on hormone therapy. I am on the shots and Coumadin (Warfarin).
Avatar n tn it still remains in the upper leg I am allergic to coumadin i have to take steroids ,visteril and benadryl do to hives from the coumadin i have severe swelling ,pain and my leg is purple do to circulation the Dr's have told the vein in my leg is history this makes the third clot in this leg and I have also had a pulmonary why do i produce so many clots?
Avatar n tn Now I have to have the valve replaced Feb. 8 due to calcium buildup and an aortic anuerysm repaired. I HATE coumadin...I had 55 protimes last year so over 25 years I have done protimes many, many times. The INR will not stay regulated and I have been on Lovenox injections numberous times. Therefore, I am seriously considering having a tssue valve instead of a mechanical valve this time.
Avatar f tn Today I take 20mg of coumidin and lovenox shots and am still not therapudic. protime is 1.73 I go to a hemotologist on the 22nd of June. I also just had a echocardiogram done as a follow-up. They found I have only 2 valves on my tricuspid and a hole i my heart. Also my ejection fraction rate is about 50% What should I be doing. Should I persue going to the Cleveland Clinic?
Avatar n tn If your father is taking Coumadin and his INR is high, the blood thinning can be reversed with intravenous medication, called Vitamin K, before the procedure. Even if his blood had already been thinned with Coumadin, he will receive intravenous Heparin blood thinner. Heparin works immediately, and the effects only last for a short time after the drug is stopped.
Avatar f tn Hi Amanda - I'd answered your question elsewhere but it looks like I got answers to some of my questions here, regarding the birth control and one condition combining with the other to cause the stroke. I was just reading up on Lovenox on Wikipedia and it listed situations where Lovenox and aspirin are used together to treat certain heart-related problems.
Avatar n tn I too have had a PE without any real reason for it and have been on coumadin since (for 3 years now) and my levels yo yo too. One week it will be too low and my dosage has to go up, the next it will be through the roof and I have to stop it or decrease the dose. It is maddening. I have been going through this ever since I was put on coumadin. Most people that I know only need their levels drawn monthly without too many changes. Not me...I get weekly draws because my levels are so labile.
Avatar f tn It was quite painful and I was treated with warfarin/coumadin pills and eventually the clots dissolved. Warfarin is NOT to be taken when pregnant because it will effect the baby so Lovenox/ heparin shots are often prescribed seeing as it is faster acting and won't reach the baby. I've also had surgery to place a little screen in my body to hopefully catch any blood clots from moving elsewhere in my body to my heart.
Avatar m tn The Pradaxa should prevent any strokes. They put me on Lovenox (Heparin) shots until coumadin made my blood thin enough after my electro conversion. Sometimes AFib converts on it's own. Is he on meds for the Afib? Something to try to control the rhythm? It sounds like they are doing the right things and that he is doing better. Hang in there. This Afib stuff is scary at first, but it gets easier to deal with. Keep you all in my thoughts . . .
645220 tn?1233764146 Hi I just did my first lovenox injection and think I might not be doing it right. I really had to push very hard for the needle to go in then it stopped about a third of the way and I had to jam it in the rest of the way. does this sound right? I have plenty of fat so it's not as if I got held up on muscle or anything.
338416 tn?1420045702 Thanks for all your well wishes, guys - I got out on Monday, and I've been taking it as easy as possible since. Back at work today. They checked my INR this morning, and found that I was at therapeutic levels. With the injection I took this morning, I will probably be a bit too high tomorrow - so they're reducing my Coumadin temporarily. But the good news is now I can stop the Lovenox. Oh, and I lost 6 pounds.
Avatar m tn My hematologist pulled me off of Coumadin and put me on Lovenox injections so that he could do some of the testing.. I guess coumadin can affect the results of some of the tests he wants to do. I was actually wondering if coumadin or lovenox could affect my thyroid absorption etc.. I'm pretty much maxed out on my synthroid and have been stable and feeling good for awhile now but since starting the new meds i feel more hypo symptoms creeping in..
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with a DVT in my right leg on Jan 8th 2013. Currently Im on Coumadin. 10mg a day everyday. My INR was last checked two days ago and is 2.3. The ER drew some blood when I initially went in with DVT symptoms and I was told a week later that I have Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome and that's what supposedly caused my clot. How exactly will my body dissolve the clot if I have APS (antiphospholipid antibody syndrome)? With APS I am more prone to clot.
Avatar f tn While it is common to feel pain, tenderness and swelling in the leg, this can also present with no symptoms. While taking Coumadin, it is important that you check with your attending physician regularly and monitor for bleeding, a common risk if you are taking Coumadin. Take care and do keep us posted.
