I was on losartan for a few months. I don't think that my bp was consistenlty high. I think what was going on was that it was very up and down and it was making me feel pretty bad. But losartan which is a third line for bp was the first thing that they put me on. And I don't think my bp was that bad. I have had elevated renin/aldosterone studies and low potassium in the past.
I have been on Losartan for approximately eight months come here recently I have found it very difficult to swallow my food and seems like he gets caught in my esophagus, yesterday at two different Meals I began to choke on my food I had to drink several glasses of water in order to get my food to go down with no issues. Could this be a side effect of Losartan?
His averaged blood pressure is 146/80. He was placed on losartan potassium (50 mg) for 8 days but there is no change to his averaged blood pressure. Would you advice him continuing losartan or seek new drugs? Many thanks.

Losartan also may cause a persistent cough, increase serum potassium, impotence, and angioedema. Losartan may reduce kidney function in some patients and should not be used by patients who have bilateral renal artery stenosis (narrowing of both arteries going to the kidneys). Rare cases of rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) have been reported.
I am not really familiar with losartan, but if it falls in the family of blood presure medications known as beta blockers it certainly can be the cause of your cough. Ace inhibitors have a much lower risk of causing the cough, and most people who have problems with beta blockers do well on them.

I am a 59 year old woman. I was prescribed Losartan for my high blood pressure in March, 2012 (when I was 57 years old). Last year, in May, 2013, I was diagnosed as an asthmatic because of a persistent cough. My cough never left me in spite of taking Monetelukast (with Cetirizine) everyday since my diagnosis. My cough is sometimes dry. But when it is wet, I have a runny nose and sputum in my throat. I also use a nebulizer. But it sometimes does not provide any relief.
I am taking Losartan, which is the generic of Cozaar. Like Benicar (which is not available in generic yet, I believe) it is an angiotensin II inhibitor.

Hello, I African American male in my 40's that have been dealing with my blood pressure running 140/ 90 for a while my doctor put me on Losartan HCTZ 50- 12.5 and my pressure. After my 6 months check up my pressure was still the same so he increased my Losartan to 100-12.5 and a few weeks after I would get readings of 130 /80 sometimes and others I would get 129/78.

Fortunately the incidence of aortic dissection or tearing is lower in these patients than it is in patients with Marfan syndrome. Unfortunately we do not know what the true incidence of adverse outcomes is with the bicuspid aortic valve population, so all we can do is extrapolate to patients with Marfans (a much different disease). There was a small study about losartan reversing liver fibrosis. It is a blood pressure med. I will try to find the study and post it, or search for it on.the forum.
OK, I just looked it up. Losartan alone, also known as Cozaar does not have a diuretic. But Losartan with HCTZ is also known as Hyzaar. Don't assume yours has the diuretic in it. Ask the pharmacist.
