Long term memory loss after head injury

Common Questions and Answers about Long term memory loss after head injury

memory

Avatar f tn It is basically a softening of the brain matter as a result of an ischemia or infarction, degenerative changes, infection, craniocerebral trauma, or other injury. Thus any damage to this lobe can lead to long term memory loss. Certain types of epilepsies and seizures and sleep disturbances too cause short term memory loss along with tiredness or fatigue. Chronic infections too are known to precipitate memory loss. For this you can try yoga and meditation.
Avatar n tn I took a very serious head injury (concusion) playing rugby nearly 2 and a half months ago and have no recolection of the event as i have memory loss of the injury occuring.
Avatar n tn I feel for what you are seeing your son go through. I personally have a Traumatic Head Injury and after months of hospitilization, months of rehab, and years of disability I have returned to work. Saying this, I understand the effects of short term memory loss like your son. His short term memory loss may or may not be linked to him hitting his head, but that being said I don't know there is much you can do for him. You could have him evaluated, tested etc.
Avatar f tn Two other neat things are the short term and long term memory lose. After a certain amount of time events are completely erased or I have a very hard time recalling them. For example I was almost raped and I had no memory of this (again friends and journals). But that could just be "trama lose" or what ever its called. Though its more like I'm forgetting everything that happened 6 months back - to events that happened before my concussion (about a year and 1/2 ago).
Avatar n tn Sometimes it would cause minor headaches but they would pass. Over the past few months I have being experiencing severe short term memory loss (to the point that i would forget what i was talking about mid-sentence), headaches, getting tongue tied/ difficulty formulating basic sentences at times and an inability to concentrate on anything for a long period of time.
Avatar n tn About an hour later he suffered a brief episode (1-2 min) of short term memory loss. He could not remember the weekend holiday or do sums. Other than feeling cold he did not exhibit any physical symptoms. He had another episode about three weeks later. A neurologist examined him and found nothing but set up an EEG. He has had no other episodes. Any suggestions as to what to ask during/after the EEG or what the potential cause might be? Thank you.
1301334 tn?1272890907 It is basically a softening of the brain matter as a result of an ischemia or infarction, degenerative changes, infection, craniocerebral trauma, or other injury. Thus any damage to this lobe can lead to long term memory loss, mood swings, talking too much, and energy bursts leading to over activity. If the MRI of brain is done and it shows an injury to frontal lobe of the brain, then your behavior changes can be explained by the injury.
Avatar f tn Experiencing short term memory loss. Will a CT scan show anything in my brain that is left over damage from my MVA from so many tears ago? I am taking Prozac, Trazadone, Xanax and Adderall (for the focus issues that have been getting worses lately.
Avatar m tn I had total loss of memory for over 3 months, now I have short term memory loss that comes and goes all day and in the last few months been having long term memory. Like Alzheimer's it comes and goes. The headaches and pain in my head are 24 - 7 in only gets bad once in awhile, if you have moderate pain you get use to it, at least I do I used to race motorcycles. Now if I can work on the white matter thing then it will all make sense.
Avatar m tn The risk of developing seizures post injury is related to the severity of the head injury. Severe head injury is defined as loss of consciousness or amnesia. The interval between head injury and seizure development varies. If the seizure arises weeks to months after injury, it is referred to as posttraumatic epilepsy. The frequency of these seizure types tend to decrease with time. The treatment is accomplished with a single antiepileptic medication, if clinically indicated.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you very much for your question; although it is quite difficult for me to give you a precise diagnosis here without being able to examine you, though I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern. You need a proper assessment and investigation here since there can be many causes for memory loss & concentration impairment.
Avatar n tn She had severe headaches and dizziness and short-term memory loss. The contrast MRI diagnosed vertebral dissection. The headaches ended in a week. The dizziness and balance problems took about 2-3 weeks to get back to normal. Her one pupil that was 2.5 mm larger is now only .5 mm larger, (Ophthalmic exam was normal) but it has been 10 weeks and she still has short-term memory problems. Her memory is getting better.
Avatar n tn Working on any underlying condition may help the short term memory loss. Head injury, too much stress, lack of sleep, depression/anxiety, drug use, and many other things. https://www.healthline.com/health/short-term-memory-loss AND https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/7-common-causes-of-forgetfulness-201302225923 Have you had a doctor evaluation for the memory issue? Avatar f tn How long ago was his accident? If these symptoms started after he was released from the hospital and are getting worse you need to take him back to the emergency room. If his neurological symptoms keep declining it could mean he did more damage to his brain than the doctors originally thought. No matter what you need to get him in to see a neurologist as soon as you can so he can start getting treated.
Avatar m tn s a lucky girl to have you sticking beside her the whole time. It is not unusual for a head injury to cause some form of memory loss, and this is because these particular brain cells have been damaged as well. The body heals in miraculous ways and it IS possible for your girlfriend to regain her memory, and for these brain cells to be repaired. It will take time, and this will definitely be a test of patience for the both of you.
Avatar n tn In 2007 he had a hip replacement done and ended up having 3 operations within one week because of complications. My question is could the buildup of medications etc cause him to now have memory loss, language skills loss and tremors in his right hand. He walked in to the hospital on crutches and now is dependent on a wheelchair.

Avatar f tn A concussion means that you have transient ( short lasting) symptoms of a traumatic brain injury. The symptoms may include memory loss, reduced ability to plan and organize, slowing of response to stimuli, etc. You can tell how sever your symptoms are only after you have recovered from the concussion. Post concussion syndrome involves prolonged symptoms. Usually headache is a common symptom. Memory is also commonly affected. It's less than a month since you have had the fall.
Avatar n tn The psychiatrist can help with medications that might help you with any long-term effects like depression, memory loss, etc. I had headaches all the time (24/7) for the first year or two, and then then got better. I also had a mild stroke, TMI, which clears up after a day or so. It is a long, hard road to recovery. Rely on doctors, friends and family.
Avatar f tn If your brain has a problem it will make a noise---severe headaches, vomiting, loss of sensation, muscle weakness etc etc. You may have short term or long term memory loss, if it involves a specific area of the brain concerned with memory. Do not worry. Nothing like this is going to happen. As I said earlier a man’s brain is actually quite safe. The smack is just like we hit our head against a door or something by mistake. Relax! Concentrate on your studies. I am sure you will do well.
Avatar m tn A concussion can last for weeks after the head injury. The symptoms too vary from person to person. Headache, confusion, memory loss, dizziness, nausea vomiting, slurred speech and fatigue are common. Delayed symptoms include depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, seizures, loss of smell etc. Injury to olfactory and lingual nerves of smell and taste could be a cause or it could be that nerves are in shock.
