Avatar n tn Yes Fentanyl or any narcotic can effect our short term memories, regardless of our age. Physicians walk the fine line of memory impairment or pain management. It is my guess you would rather see your mother with some memory disturbances instead of dealing with chronic pain that would make her days and nights absolutely miserable.

1339419 tn?1275966042 My short term memory is not 100% as it is, although it is not as bad as my long term memory, and when my blood pressure is really high ( 160/100+ ) I seem to have short term memory loss that increases with the increasing blood pressure numbers. Is this a direct side effect of high blood pressure, others with hypertension having suggested it effects their short term memory, or is it confined only to myself because of my memory problems?
Avatar m tn He is starting her on dexamethasone to answer that dilemma but is short term only. If her memory comes back and thereby can be attributed to the tumor, is there any long term non-surgical options for her? she does not want surgery at her age and the surgeon is also reluctant because of it. im concerned the edema will eventually begin to cause severe impairment (she has occasionally showed signs of mini TIA's of late) and loss of function. She lives alone but very close by.

You need a proper assessment and investigation here since there can be many causes for memory loss & concentration impairment.
Avatar m tn Hi Kjm, Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am sorry to hear about your memory problems. In my opinion it's not uncommon to have some memory issues while you are on an opiate, especially if it's an acute problem or short term high doses of opiate therapy. Usually these clear up soon after discharge or discontinuation of the medication. It's not usual to have a long term memory problem following short term opiate therapy. However six days is not a terribly long time.
Avatar f tn However my headaches have not subsided at all, brain scans are normal and i also have problems with my long term and working memory. I know these things may not be directly related to thyroid function but i never had any of these problem until my thyroid started malfunctioning. I am still very fatigued. What could be wrong? I'm only 17 as well, cognitive impairment was the last thing i expected.
Avatar f tn Ambien absolutely can cause memory loss, more commonly short-term issues, but also some people have reported problems with their long term memory as well. The good news is...if other causes have been ruled out, and Ambien seems to be the culprit, the memory issues will resolve most times after the Ambien is safely tapered.
Avatar m tn I have a severe difficulty staying focused. To the point where I can be having a conversation with somebody and the minute they turn around, I forget everything. I am afraid it is affecting my schooling as well. I can't remember much. Its like I have no short-term memory. what would you suggest I do? What type of medication can help me stay alert?

338416 tn?1420045702 I think we can all relate to that - it takes longer for me to figure something out, my short-term memory sometimes just doesn't function, and if somebody's telling me something, it takes me a minute to understand.
Avatar m tn I have taken it for about 2 weeks. I have noticed some cognitive changes, including memory impairment. Can Xanax have this effect that rapidly? What are some better altermatives (loazapram?)?

Avatar n tn He lost his memory completely and now has terrible problems with visual perception, short term and long term memory among other things. Rehab was long and hard. He has regained his sight, speech and movement but he did not regain his past memory and had to relearn everything. In Dec 2007 (2 1/2 years after the brain injury) his neurologist prescribed Ambien to him hoping it would have similar effects (waking up what appear to be dead brain cells) it has had for coma patients.
Avatar n tn he is now walking and talking but his short term memory has been very deeply affected, also his long term memory is bad,he does not seem to recall many events from the past and even though we are repetively repeating to him that he is in hospital he keeps asking where he is and saying there is nothing wrong with him.

Avatar m tn Traditionally, aphasia suggests the total impairment of language ability, and dysphasia a degree of impairment less than total. However, the term dysphasia is easily confused with dysphagia, a swallowing disorder, and thus aphasia has come to mean both partial and total language impairment in common use.
Avatar n tn Dementia is characterized by progressive memory impairment and intellectual dysfunctions. Memory, orientation, ability to plan and organize is also impaired.
Avatar n tn Cognitive impairments can persist for at least 6 months after withdrawal of clonazepam; it is unclear whether full recovery of memory functions occurs. Other long-term effects of benzodiazepines include tolerance, a benzodiazepine dependence as well as a benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome occurs in a third of people treated with clonazepam for longer than 4 weeks.
Avatar m tn Maybe now that the push is to get away from interferon there will be some truth coming out about the long term effects. My best to you, Dee.
