Common Questions and Answers about Long term effects of methadone use for pain control

methadose

Avatar f tn Actually there are several very good articles on the use of methadone for long term treatment of chronic pain. It is beleived to be the narcotic least apt to be abused and has the least side effects. I'm sorry I forgot the author (a respected PM Physician) of the best and most informative article but maybe someone here will remember. I found it by goggling it. Dosage may have to be increased in time but again they beleive not as often as other opiates.

7163794 tn?1457366813 myself to get up? Is this in my head, or is it possible there are long term effects to pain meds and suboxone use? Could it just be me? Has anyone else felt this?
Avatar f tn Several years ago there was a study done on the effects of long term opiate therapy. Forest Tennant, MD, who undertook a first-of-its-kind research study evaluating chronic pain patients who had been receiving opioid therapy for 10 to 35 years. I found the results of his study extremely encouraging as should have other patients in need of long-term opioid therapy as well as their doctors, some of whom may have been hesitant about it. Dr.
662972 tn?1270166301 what are long term effects of methadone good/bad i am only 28 and been on it for 8 mos all info is welcomed thanks
631581 tn?1224844661 some here can not use narcotics due to pain...altho i have heard that methadone is a good long term pain relief drug at low doses..i am afraid to go there.....i do know it is hard to stop without leong tapering..slowly cutting down....oxy is not your answer for sure..yoga is my slavation these days..along with heat and ice, massage and being sensible....
Avatar m tn The transition method seems valid, though I don't recommend long term methadone use. Methadone is actually that much stronger and long lasting 30mgs will cover 160mgs of oxy. If your husband is an alcoholic, he is an addict, with enough time, his new drug of choice could become opiates, which is worse in my mind, the the consequences are the same though. The detox from methadone is about 90 days on average, it's 2-4 weeks for oxy, so it really depends on what his long term goals are.
Avatar f tn However, the pain-relieving effects are shorter than the pharmacological half-life, so that dosing for pain control usually requires multiple doses per day. Depending on its form, Methadone can also be known as Dimepheptanol. As with heroin and all other opiates, methadone tolerance and methadone dependence usually develop with repeated doses.
901222 tn?1399142874 ve needed acute pain control for a limited period, for instance, with a root canal procedure I had last year. Breakthrough opiates don't really cut it for me, but I found that pregabalin 150mg TID for 2 days before, and then for 5 days after the procedure, was very effective in controlling that kind of neuropathic pain. You mention NMDA-antagonists -- Have you tried Namenda (memantine)? It is an oral NMDA-antagonist.
Avatar f tn What are the long term side effects of taking Gabapentin for long term pain control?
Avatar n tn And depending on the amount of opiates and how many years- def need medical monitoring ( there are 7 diff meds we give to manage detox symptoms for 3 days) and possibly methadone or suboxone replacement long term to avoid relapse or long term pain management. Benzo detox is more emotionally unpleasant than physical- but it should still be tapered off and not stopped cold turkey. Of these 3 benzo detox is physically the safest.
Avatar m tn dont be too scared as said above few people experience sides but one thing is for sure long term use for decades is not healthy and only cirrhosis or severe damaged liver can justify such use so i'd definitely combo with other therapies so that nucs can be used short term from latest easl conference we have now tests for sustained immune control of hbv cccdna equal or less than 5 copies/cell we now need an hbsag level equal to 5copies/cell, mybe hbsag 500iu/ml
Avatar n tn When methadone is taken under medical supervision, long-term maintenance causes no adverse effects to the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, bones, blood, brain, or other vital body organs. Methadone produces no serious side effects, although some patients experience minor symptoms such as constipation, water retention, drowsiness, skin rash, excessive sweating, and changes in libido. Once methadone dosage is adjusted and stabilized or tolerance increases, these symptoms usually subside.
Avatar m tn I am using Pegasys 180mug q/wk as an off label use to treat Polycythemia Vera and it works well.I will have to take this med the rest of my life. I am aware of the short term side effects, but what about long term side effects? What can I expect years from now?
Avatar f tn HI and welcome...I can't answer your question on long term use as I too just began oxycodone in March..it took me a few weeks to build up to full strength after that the side effects of drowsiness and brain fog began to wear off, now I feel pretty normal..and yes I too am now able to do some small gardening tasks and many things I hadn't been able to for a few years...I only hope I do not have to keep upping the dosage in order to continue at this level of control(?
Avatar m tn I guess I don't understand how people use Methadone for pain management IF they have to use a BT med. Doesn't Methadone block the effects of other narcotics? So how can BT meds work if they are blocked?
Avatar f tn We have decided that the pain is permanent and I must plan on the life-time of pharmaceutical control of the pain. I have had about 2 per year for the past 3 years of the nerve block halfway between each side of my neck and the shoulder on that side. They are very successful for me. My question is...are there any reasons why a person should not have nerve burns? Are there negative side effects? Thank you in advance for any ideas.
Avatar n tn t have bruising or nearly as much additional joint or muscle pain. Some of the side effects are common to both drugs, but for me PTU has been a godsend.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for sharing your experiences btn the meth and sub. That was exactly what I was wondering. Although, I'm sure that getting off of either differs for everyone...personal experiences/knowledge was exactly what I was looking for. I have tried to encourage her to add other additional non medicinal things to her pain control effort, however she is resistant to try any because she says the sub helps it already so there is no other need to.
Avatar f tn I got my Methadone prescribed for pain and for yrs. It makes me so mad that they will give someone Methadone to come off of a short amount of hydo or other opiates. This makes no sense that your Dr did not just try to taper you down some more off the hydros. Most ppl go to these clinics to get off drugs and I can understand this, but not for such a low dose of hydos.
Avatar m tn acetaminophen (aka tylenol aka panadol) is mixed in with far too many OTC medicines, in my opinion. If you are not taking any other medications, and you don't drink, and you have a healthy liver, then your total intake of acetaminophen in a single day should not exceed 4 grams, and on a regular basis should not exceed 3 grams. If you do take it daily then it is important to watch your diet; stay away from softdrinks, caffeine, and especially stay clear of alcohol.
