Avatar n tn You could replace meat with lentils!! It's a better alternative....

Avatar n tn If you don't have anemia, you don't have an iron problem. Vegetarians should have no problem getting sufficient iron, as it's present and best absorbed from a variety of plants. Examples are nettles, raw spinach, raw dandelion greens, beets, parsley, watercress -- you get the picture here, green leafy vegetables and others as well. Now, just being a vegetarian doesn't mean you're eating well.
Avatar f tn t eat, which is the same as non-vegetarians -- simple carbs, which turn to sugar quickly and are stored as fat if not burned. Many vegetarians around the world have a nice soft middle because they eat so much white flour and potatoes and the like. You need to make sure you get your protein. And then you need to exercise.
Avatar n tn Bread, pasta, rice, cookies and such are caloric foods. You should avoid sugary foods because they may worsen burping and flatulence. If you have iron or B12 deficiency it's not likely you can correct this in short time just with foods, so you'd need to take supplements. So, right now you are not on vegetarian food (chicken nuggets)? If you're prepared for one 4 day elimination diet trial, you can try it, but what are you prepared to eat (or not) rigt now?
Avatar f tn this could be because when you excluded these high protein foods, it is possible that your intake of carbohydrates increased. Protein will keep you fuller for longer with less calories that carbs. Of course there are many possible reasons for this gain, it may not even be related to you becoming a vegetarian. Good luck and I wish you well!
Avatar f tn Hello! Can anyone tell me any foods or snacks that would be a good buy on a limited budget? I'm worried I'm not getting enough food in my new diet. My college cafeteria does its best for vegetarians, but it's really a bit terrible all round. I have to stick to salads and veggie burgers (unless they run out). I'm also exercising a lot now so I'm worried I may not be retaining enough calories let alone nutrients.
Avatar n tn s only found in animal products including dairy and eggs which many vegetarians eat. Vegan foods (the milk and dairy alternatives) are generally fortified with b12 so it's not an issue these days as it used to be. Regarding conceiving, I strongly recommend you stay vegetarian and possibly cut out dairy during this time. Most animal products have vast amounts of hormones in them that are pumped into the animals. These can interfere with our own hormones if we are very sensitive.
Avatar m tn Most vegetarians rely on beans and nuts for their protein, as should you. The rice should be brown rice for maximum protein and nutrition; beans combined with any whole grain will give you a complete protein. Iron is not a problem for vegetarians -- there are many vegetable sources for it, including beets, parsley, dandelion greens, most green leafy veggies except lettuce, nettles, etc.
Avatar f tn Gelatin is not made from animal anymore because of vegetarians. If you are still not sure read the labels on the bottle; they have to list all ingredients. It is important you take vitamins as a vegetarian because if you are not eating the proper protein combinations, fruit, and vegetables on a daily basis then you are not getting what you need. As a vegan you need Vitamin B12 supplementation because you cannot get that from plant foods.
Avatar n tn alot of vegetarians eat ALOT of soy and soy is a protein. Too much protein is bad for the kidneys. I would suggest talking to your doctor about it. Also, read the labels on the food you buy, you will be surprised at how much soy is in alot of stuff you wouldnt even think it would be in..
Avatar m tn Actually, vegetarian diets don't in and of themselves make you skinny -- if you eat a lot of simple carbs you'll get as fat as anyone else. Meat diets don't make people fat, if you eat lean meat in reasonable portions you'll be thinner than most vegetarians. It's how much and what you eat, not the ideology, that determines weight.
Avatar f tn Hi Crystal, It is possible that in addition to everything else u r eating that the whey will affect u. Not all foods that r on a list and considered safe for those of us with GERD will be safe for all of us. We all have to try foods and find what our triggers r...the lists of safe foods r to help guide us. Also I am surprise u eat yogurt...it tends to slow down the LES as it is a dairy product. What is ur green drink?
Avatar f tn Barb is right about pretty much all she said. And most important is protein intake. Your body needs protein to survive so make sure you find ways to get it in. Also know that muscle weighs more than fat so you may weight more simply because of your muscle mass. I bet if you had a body fat test done at the gym or doctors office you would find you don't have any fat or very little on your body at all. Also, you need a good support system.
Avatar m tn If you look at the ingredients in the best absorbed iron supplement, Floradix, you will see all plants that contain iron. The list is quite long. Dandelion greens, watercress, parsley, nettles, sea vegetables and beets (especially with the tops) are just a few of the sources of iron you have available to you.
1666434 tn?1325262350 Avoid sugary and highly processed foods. Focus your diet on minimally processed foods, whole grains, vegetables, healthy fats, some fruit etc. A lower carb diet may also be beneficial if you were borderline. Hope this helps.
19669595 tn?1482162708 Seitan is another popular protein source of vegetarians. It has 36 grams per half cup, so a little goes a long way. Tofu and tempeh are two other protein choices to incorporate into your dishes.

Avatar n tn If you eat healthy, and use a variety of whole foods in moderation, as you lose weight (and after awhile gradually become more physically active) you will start to feel better and less tired. At the moment, it's like your heart and joints are coping with lugging around a 150-pound backpack on a 150 pound body (no wonder you're tired and out of sorts, though of course your leg muscles have adapted without major difficulty).
Avatar n tn This means that you should skip the salads, and raw foods in general are a bad idea. Any foods that have a high fat content can irritate the intestines, so try to avoid adding more fat than necessary to your diet (a few tablespoons of cooking oil a day tends to be okay). Since you don't eat meat, I assuming that the majority of your protein either comes from soy or nuts (we are also vegetarians). Nuts have a large amount of fat by weight, and can cause problems.
Avatar f tn That response clearly shows you have no idea about vegans or vegetarians. I was asking who else is, not for opinions. Thank you.
Avatar n tn m glad you already knew about avoiding heavy loads of soy or peanuts. This is especially important for vegetarians, since their main source of protein is plant based. I hope the expert still answers your question soon. You are wise to take action now to prevent future problems. I'm glad you feel good with the diet, too. I know you're just wanting to keep things that way.
Avatar f tn Therefore, people prone to encephalopathy are advised to maintain a high intake of vegetable protein and a low intake of animal protein, or even better, to become vegetarians. This type of diet will help control mental symptoms in people suffering from some degree of chronic encephalopathy—that is, those who have some degree of mental confusion and/or memory loss all the time.
Avatar f tn Once any medical problem is ruled out...then you can look to other more subtle issues that can be influencing taste and smell. As the fine doctor has already stated, this is pretty subjective, but this is an area I do have quite a bit of experience in and I have found some things definitely affect the smell and taste of semen. Some suggestions....smoking of any kind makes semen incredibly bitter smelling and tasting...if your hubby smokes then he should stop for oh, SO many reasons!
Avatar f tn Vitamin B12 deficiency is the most likely cause of your symptoms. Vegetarians and vegans are in the higher risk group for B12 deficiency. Sublingual (under the tongue) B12 is very effective to boost levels.
