3149845 tn?1506627771 It was amazing to me to visit Indonesia and meet an uneducated person who nonetheless spoke English, Bahasa Indonesia ( the unifying language of Indonesia) as well as his tribal language and was learning Chinese ! People usually feel more comfortable and can more accurately explain themselves in the language which they learned as a child. Perhaps this is why those workers speak Spanish.

Perhaps the numbers have made it easier for players not to make the effort to learn English. There are 45 players from South Korea on the LPGA roster and 121 international competitors from 26 countries. Many players can hang out with those from their homeland and feel comfortable speaking their native language.

But I recently just started talking to him in English. But he looks confused when I do and seems to not really understand what I'm saying. My question is how do I do it so he starts picking up the English language.

Avatar f tn I wonder if it could be attributed to the learning of a new language. Being enmeshed in a new culture can necessitate the use of a foreign language to communicate. You may just be distracted or overwhelmed with new words or your mind may be looking for the translation?? The stress involved with your change in lifestyle may also be a contributing factor. You may just need some time to process and adapt to your new environment. (Six months sounds like adequate time though. Not sure.
Avatar m tn It is especially being compounded by having to learn a second language (English) with translations from your first language that do not always match up or translate correctly. English is a hard language to learn because of the different dialects and slang we have in our language. For many English speaking people, our language is difficult, so don't feel alone. You may not be able to tell it, by my writing, but I suffer from dyslexia, yet I've overcome mine.
Avatar f tn Given that your English is not your son’s native language (and not the primary language spoken at home), I think it would be a little premature to assume that there is an underlying neurological or psychological problem. If you are living the United States, since he is over three years-old you may request an initial Core Evaluation to determine if there are any indications of special needs through your local school district.

211043 tn?1337050701 This is plea to those using text message abbreviations in their posts - PLEASE use the english language! Avatar n tn W/a/J, I'm not disagreeing with anything you say about cochlear implants, etc., just that I would not characterize someone's skills with a second language (which, of course, English is to those whose first language is ASL or another sign language) as "atrocious" or "horrible," words that have a highly and unnecessarily negative connotation.
