Lipitor vs generics

Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor vs generics

lipitor

Avatar m tn It is possible, Thyroid meds are funny, what works well for one does not work well for others, I was on (Generic) Levothyroxine for six months and my labs did not budge, then went to Synthroid (brand Name) and had better sucess, my endo claimed that generics were not as consistant as name brand. Pharmacy said they are the same? So the change may have made a difference, some times the fillers they use can cause issues also.
Avatar n tn ve been on niaspam and my dr. thinks I should change to lipitor because of the new drug studies on lipitor. I am a perfect weight, and i'm 63 with no incidents of heart attack but my arteries do show significant arterilosclerosis. I feel healthy and seem great so far! any advice appreciated.
Avatar n tn We both - husband and wife, have been experiencing these symptoms. We have been on simvastatin for (wife for 1+ years, me for 2+ years) and stopped about 5-6 months ago - wife still having pains in the butt some dizziness and leg pain, but getting better - I am having butt pain and leg pains, swollen left knee, (but joint pain seems OK on stairs), recovery seems slower than my wife's.
Avatar f tn Actually, the above answer is not entirely true. While, by law, a generic has to contain the same dosage of the active ingredient, it isn't QUITE as simple as that. There are a lot more factors that go into generics vs. brands (like its pharmacokinetic profile and bioequivalence (BE) and bioavailability (BA).....but it's a tad more complicated than is appropriate for this forum) There has been a VERY long lived debate about the efficacy of generic vs brand name meds.
Avatar n tn My Asthma Dr. said that he would consider changing from Lipitor 5 mg to Crestor (dosage not yet mentioned) after 1 more blood test. 3 years ago another dr. suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg.
Avatar n tn Both pretrty much the same thing. These are generics for Lipitor and Pravachol, both very affectve. Below are the results of a study that was recently done; "With so many statins available for clinical use in coronary artery syndromes, there has been much discussion about which is the best. Two recent trials have compared the clinical outcomes of intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin 80 mg/day and standard lowering with pravastatin 40 mg/day.
665125 tn?1273023924 As my nodule began getting larger, my ENDO told me she wanted my to only take Synthroid, no generics! So I have been on Synthroid for 3 years now. I recently had a complete Thyroidectomy and a Parathyroidectomy, is Synthroid the thyroid hormone supplement I should take, or natural? Has anyone had better results from Natural vs. Synthetic in regard to symthoms of being Hypothyroid?
822153 tn?1333062995 My professor is also a physician and we had this argument in class. He taught us that most generics serve the same purpose as top brand medications. The difference being the manufacturing of the drug and how the mixture is created. A good search engine tool is on a site called Medtipster. It will convert top brands to generics. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn give me what works. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with generics vs name brand meds and if so what did you come up with for a solution? Did the name brand meds work way beter? It sure seems that way to me. I am astounded that it is so much better but I am told there is no difference. My butt there isn't!!! Even if it is in the inert ingredients, there is most definitely a difference and whatever it is makes the NB work much more efficiently.
Avatar f tn Just wanted to see who was doing what. Was told that my synthroid was most likely causing my problems. All I do know is that I am not doing as well when dose was lowered. No difference with brand or generic, I've had both. One doesn't make me feel better than the other. Was told to watch out for bad generics making there way through our pharmacy's. My question was really was geared toward generics, sorry for the confusion.
Avatar m tn I too notice a difference in how I feel taking Zoloft vs. Sertraline. I like Sertraline better though because I don't feel as numbed out and my sex drive is not affected.
Avatar f tn My insurance is denying the brand name and I am fine paying out of pocket for it for now, but would like to resolve this issue. Is there a difference in the brand name vs the generic???
Avatar m tn Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :) the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner. We'll never see studies with famvir or acyclovir either since both are generics and no money is to be made from doing the studies at this point.
Avatar f tn Synthroid (along with Lexoxyl and generics), which contains only T4. Armour (and other desiccated porcine thyroid products) contain both T3 and T4. Some people need that extra T3, some don't. It's partly a matter of personal preference and partly what works best for you, preference aside. You've already had TSH test at 800, so that is a very firm indicator of hypothyroidism. Your symptoms are also classic hypo symptoms. Be sure to ask your doctor for FREE T3 and FREE T4.
Avatar n tn My thryoid levels used to change a lot more with the generics. My endo told me to do brand name too. After calling insurance too I found out that I could do mail order for $10 for a 3 month supply. That ended up saving me more than the generic cost. The fillers in the meds can change and that is the part you need to worry about. Talk to the pharmacist, they helped me out a lot. They told me to try it and if you see a change then you know!!
1107393 tn?1263417738 It was my understanding that the makeup of the hormone is probably the same, but generics of the same drug may use a different filler....They use binders and color and fillers to get the desired size, shape and color of pill. I'm pretty new at all of this too, so one of the more experienced folks may be able to answer this better. I started out on synthroid...then went generic....synthroid messes with me...I don't like some of the side effects...
Avatar n tn Different brands and generics have different fillers, etc., and some people have sensitivity to those. Also, endos claim that the actual amount of the drug in generics can vary 10-15%. I don't know if this is true or drug company propaganda, but levo is cheap enough that it's just not worth the risk. Since Levoxyl is a T4-only med, there is no benefit to splitting your dose.
Avatar n tn I asked my psychiatrist if the generic works any differently, as every now and then you hear of generics not working quite as well. She said there is virtually no difference in the drugs, except for the fact that one is a brand name and one is a generic. However, I recently went through the same thing as you. I'd been on Lexapro for eight years and did so well on it, and out of the blue it stopped working.
Avatar f tn When I found out I had thyroid trouble in early 2004, I took generic T4 pills because my doctor had told me that there was no difference between brand name pills and generic pills, other than the higher price for brand name pills. However, my blood test scores bounced up and down like mountains and valleys. Then I read that we can't take generics because they're all made according to different recipes. Well, that explained the peaks and valleys in my blood tests.
Avatar f tn s not possible that you all have experienced problems in the past, but as far as the generics vs the brand, same formulation, I was told absolutely no difference.
Avatar f tn Everyone says negative things about generics. And sometimes it is warranted. But not always. For instance the generic of claritin and some heart and blood pressure drugs makes them affordable and they work fine. My husband gets generics of a lot of his meds and he does very well. Right now, I am slowly losing weight. It has been only a month so I am not up to full speed. But I feel in the last 2 days I have turned a corner and feel more like my old self. GOTO ANOTHER DRUGSTORE!!
865758 tn?1285952904 The symptoms of overmedication and hyperthyroidism are basically the same. That's because overmedication artificially induces a hyper state. Get your TSH, free T3 and free T4 tested once every six to eight weeks, sooner if you consistently feel hyper. The comparison between the pre-increase numbers and the post-increase numbers should show a trend. If you're really afraid of the increase, you might ask your doctor if you could go to 37.5 mcg first, and then 44 or 50 later if the 37.
907968 tn?1292622204 Crestor is the most powerful statin to date, much stronger than Lipitor which is very strong. The starting dosage recommended for severe artery disease with crestor is 10mg, which lowers c-ldl by a whopping 46-52%. This is a lot, and most people don't need this much of a reduction, certainly that much of the powerful drug. You can get 5mg, but this is the lowest. It has been shown that 2.5mg lowers c-ldl by 40% and 1mg by 34%.
