Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor grapefruit

lipitor

A Potential for Adverse Events Many patients may take their medications with a glass of juice. However, since the accidental discovery of an interaction between the calcium channel blocker, felodipine, with grapefruit juice,1 it has now become evident that grapefruit juice has the potential to alter the plasma concentrations of many medications when they are taken by mouth. In some cases, this may result in undesirable clinical effects of medications.
just read something about grapefruit flavinoides inhibits hcv. this interests me and i wonder if anyone else has heard of this??
I note there is a caution on my lipitor not to take grapefruit juice while on this medication. What about taking LEMON juice? Is it classed as the same?
I started taking Valium recently and noticed that the bottle warned not to consume grapefruit of the juice at all while taking this medication. This was a issue for me because I drink hansen's natural cane sugar soda with real grapefruit extract and I had to give that up, but I really didn't want to so I read up on what it will do. One article I came across said it would increase the potency of certain meds by 400% http://www.mayoclinic.
Another Grapefruit Advantage Although focusing on a different component of the grapefruit, previous research supports the hepatic potential of grapefruit. Phytonutrients in grapefruit, called limonoids, inhibit tumor formation by promoting the formation of glutathione-S-transferase, a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme sparks a reaction in the liver that helps to make toxic compounds more water soluble for excretion from the body.
One thing I have read about is Grapefruit Juice helping in clearing HCV. Since reading this I have started drinking Grapefruit Juice daily. The way I see it is it is not going to hurt me either way to drink it. But I was wondering how many here really believe that drinking Grapefruit Juice can help fight off HCV? I am trying everything I can to help me try and have spontaneous clearance. I don't really care for the taste but have been putting it down just incase.
I've been on Lipitor 10mg for about 4 years. I've had episodes of burning type muscle pain in my legs and arms, some numbness and tingling along with general feeling of nausea and malaise. My doctor feels this could be because of the Lipitor and I stopped taking it 4 days ago. How long until I can expect to see improvement? My liver enzymes were always within normal range and blood work shows no elevated white count or anemia. Thanks.
I've been taking 80 mg of Lipitor for 10+ years for my heart without any problems. Recently I began experiencing debilitating muscle cramps and spasms in my upper thighs. I can literally feel the muscles rolling and tightening under my skin. Nothing helps them. They occur mostly at night, but bending my leg too much can also trigger an attack. My pharmacist says its from the Lipitor. My doctor says its from Vitamin D and Magnesium deficiencies.
How does grapefruit interact with medicines? Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice can cause higher levels of some medicines in your body, making it more likely that you will have side effects from the medicine. Interactions can happen up to 3 days after eating or drinking grapefruit. This means you cannot drink grapefruit juice in the morning and take your medications later in the day to stop possible medicine interactions. Return to top Do all medicines interact with grapefruit?
Have skipped Lipitor and Diovan. The reason for this is that Diovan interacts with about four or more of my other meds and both Lipitor and Diovan have the ability to cause symptoms of FM. Besides, I miss grapefruit!
Following heart by-pass surgery at the Cleveland Clinic over two years ago, I have been taking the following medication in the late evening: Norvasc 2.5mg; Lipitor 20mg; aspirin 81mg; One a Day multivitamin for over 50; vitamin E 400iu; Metamucil, one teaspoon. When in season, I have been eating grapefruit in the morning. My info sheet for the "statin" drugs shows that Lipitor (atorvastatin) is not included in the grapefruit warning list, but Norvasc is.
are good for you but not if sickly--and many pills do not do well or are told to not use w/grapefruit with--Lipitor, is a biggy no no! I find if I grill pineapple slices, they do not effect like the fresh just cut will do!
My ears have stopped ringing for the first time in like... 1 or 2 years! I think the Lipitor is totally out of my system today (though I can't be sure, because I don't remember which was the last day I took it, so I'm waiting until tomorrow to declare the 3-day wait over, and then... GRAPEFRUIT!). Don't know how long Diovan takes to leave the body, and I'm fairly certain the Omega-3 hasn't had enough time to provide benefits yet. But if my tinnitus is gone, I'll be so happi happi!
* Anthelmintics (Used for treating certain parasitic infections, includes praziquantel albendazole and mebendazole) * carbamazepine (Tegretol) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice slows the breakdown of this drug, increasing the level of it in blood * Loperamide (Imodium), the anti-diarrhea drug * colchicine (Colcrys) The CYP3A4 isoform of cytochrome P450 is located in both the liver and the enterocytes. Many oral drugs undergo first-pass (presystemic) metabolism by the enzyme.
She might be thinking of atorvastatin. With some of the statin drugs like Lipitor, you can't use grapefruit juice.
I see there are other ways to lower cholesterol than pharmacy drugs, like grapefruit, etc, but that these interfere with both Lipitor and Atenenol. While on medication, I have kept up a considerable exercise plan and have significantly altered my diet. Cholesterol went from total 260 (including a Bad number for Good cholesterol) to between 120 and 150, depending, with good cholesterol now excellent. Average BP went from roughly 180/120 to usually 100/65.
I have coronary artery disease, and i take 20 mg of lipitor and 2 low dose aspirin a day. My doctor is new and tells me my problems are my lipitor, they may have to lower my dose. My old doctor had me on 10 mg a day, and somehow the pharmacy gave me 20 mg and it stuck at that. My docotr never ordered that, but i ended up always getting it. However i have a a 90 percent blockage of my coronary artery and had surgery, but no stent.
Grapefruit Juice is quite harsh on your liver. Its effects last for over 24 hours. It may lower your VL but you pay for it. Save the grapefruit till just before your tx.
Ive read that lemons and limes are similar to grapefruit in its reaction to certain medications...i am trying to dig it out from google again....lemons do clean the blood and the liver very well...im a big lemon drinker, before i started TX...
Despite being the first statin it is not the best studied as well, and the evidence we now have regarding the benefits from statins in heart disease come primarily from other more powerful statins ( such as zocor pravachol or lipitor). I would recommend you to change to one of these, and also consider crestor as an option, despite the lack of mortality data from this particular medication, because of its improved metabolic profile and less deleterious effects on hdl levels.
Other interventions may include switching the Lipitor to Crestor, which does not decrease the HDL to the same level as Lipitor, dietary and lifestyle modifications, or medications such as Gemfibrozil.benzofibrate/fenofibrate, whcih actually have some proven clinical effectiveness. The reason we don't routinely use them in patients already on Statins, is the increased event rate of myopathy and hepatitis.
Although I had a brand new (and yet unopened) $90. bottle of Lipitor, I was soon convinced to toss them for a wide array of alternative and natural remedies. Now, 6 months later, with HDL up 130% to normal and CHOL also in the normal range, I am feeling much better. My treatment came off the shelf at the local grocer at a cost of approx. $20 for the 6 months, and with no noticeable negative side affects. Compare using Lipitor, having a 5.
Diovan, Lexapro, Nexium, Lipitor, Singulair(stopped this), Seroquel, Rhinocort, Ciprodex(for ear). Any suggestions as to what else can be checked out?
I'm 72, and just recently started taking Lipitor, I was astounded to see my TC go from 242 to 136 in about three weeks. My downfall was hard candies. I don't know my entire Lipid panel yet as I am not due til Jan 08. I have great BP, HB, Tri and under normal sugar. So sugar readings cannot be depended on. I had a 5 way bypass in 99 and just recently experienced unstable angina. The cutting out of sweets and watching my diet has vastly improved my health and eliminated the Angina.
You don't mix grapefruit with certain (if not most) cholestrial meds such as Lipitor and others. But Cranberry juice and tx, yum yum.....
Have you had any comments from the pharmacy as to drug interactions? One that I know of is grapefruit juice. Make sure she doesn't have any, it can double and even triple the effects of certain medications. I have two concerns regarding her list of medications. 1. There are far too many and judging from a few it is damaging her liver. and 2. Aspirin is a mircale drug, yes - but it is a powerful blood thinner as well. Make sure she gets blood tests.
Usually when the levels arent controlled by Metformin (Diabex) then Lipitor is given (to avoid vascular problems) and also Dianycron. You may have to 'google' these meds as they are the brand names. But the best meds for diabetes II and intracontradictions with Levo are a maintenance dose of Metformin (which helps weight loss too) and Diamycron. My partner takes Metform morning and night and 1 x lipitor in the morning with 1 x diamycron in the evening.
