Avatar n tn I stopped taking statins because I read an article that said that statins cause memory loss and do not really help to prevent heart disease. I also was feeling achy, like my muscles were getting weak, which is a side effect of lipitor and statins. But since my cholesterol is so high, I am wondering if I should go back on lipitor or prevestatin. I know someone who recovered from a stroke by taking niacin so I was taking that, but not enough to do much good. Does anyone suggest niacin?
Avatar n tn Absolutely call her doctor about this situation and what she is experiencing. Memory loss and cognition issues are known to occur with this medication. Many years ago, a warning was issued about this side effect. However, there is also some conflicting data. For many, it is a safe choice in cholesterol lowering medication. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/statin-side-effects/art-20046013 This is an interesting read on statins.
3170462 tn?1344717552 I was wondering if anyone here has experienced hair loss from taking a statin. My husband was placed on Lipitor about 5 months ago and has noticed that he's losing more than a normal amount of hair. His hairline isn't receding; it's thinning from all over.

Avatar m tn According to the FDA and the NIH, there is no link to statin use and memory loss. Many would like to have us believe there is, but there have been no studies or trials that show any data to indicate that statin use causes memory loss. The statement above is from the FDA which says specifically there is NO LINK to statin use and memory loss but it was seen in the study group so the FDA wants the public to be aware of that fact alone.
Avatar m tn Thanks for reply however not quite, it's 6.5 (divide by 18), still the question is, why should this be used for HDL particularly if, apparently, you have to take it the rest of your life?

Avatar m tn I think what has upset a lot of people is the new findings in some patients who suffer from memory loss and other problems associated with statins. Perhaps if someone has normal cholesterol, they shouldn't be put on statins at all, but it does seem they are automatically given to almost all heart patients as a precaution.
Avatar f tn I now believe my RLS was in fact an early reaction to Lipitor and that my back and neck pain, etc. are an indication of increasing toxicity from statins. Is this an accurate assessment? I need to know what my next steps are. I can't tolerate taking statins any longer.

Avatar n tn My husband had a silent massive heart attack almost 10 years ago, with a resulting loss of about 2/3 of his heart function, cardiomyopathy & congestive heart failure. He had a 3 way pacemaker implanted a year later, with a defibrilator, pacer & synchronizer of the bottom ventricles of the heart. He is on maximum medication and has been doing relatively well until about 2 months ago when he started noticebly dragging his right leg and not swinging his right arm.
Avatar m tn s office which was scheduled as a result of a possible TIA (sudden memory loss and confusion for a minute). At rest my Ejection Fraction was only 40% (was around 60% about 3 years ago). The EF increased to over 50% when my pulse rate was high and the pacemaker no longer controlling things. My carotid arteries checked fine if that has any bearing. My GP told me to cut the Atenolol in half and gave me an RX for Enalapril Maleate 5mg daily.

Avatar n tn Johns Hopkins researchers who have been at the forefront of this field reviewed the evidence on short-term and long-term mental changes after bypass surgery. They found that short-term confusion, memory loss, and poorer problem solving and information processing are common after bypass surgery, but are usually temporary and reversible. Most people return to their pre-bypass level of function between 3 and 12 weeks after surgery.
Avatar f tn But this forgetfulness is too much stressful for me and affecting my work and peace of mind. Even my parents are complaining and blaming me all the time for this. Could this be depression? I have a very demanding and insecure job in NGO sector, which involves on an average 15 days travel per month in different countries. I have a difficult life, with broken marriage and parents with extreme fragile health. I try my best to take care of them and I live with them.
