Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and liver problems

lipitor

Avatar m tn I am confussed by RJGCEDARS post because i did not think that you could take Lipitor if you have liver problems, also the better your liver gets the better it metabolises cholesterol.
10996785 tn?1432812977 LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not for everyone, including anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to LIPITOR. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop taking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away. If you take LIPITOR tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness.
Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
Avatar n tn What is the problem: Lipitor. Lipitor and other statins have a long list of adverse health problems including liver damage, kidney failure, heart failure, cataracts and diabetes.
Avatar n tn Recent studies have found that statins like Lipitor acutally improve liver function in patients with liver disease and the incidence rate of liver failure is not turning out to be as high as originally thought. In fact, the FDA is considering dropping the liver failure side effect from the patient leaflet and consumer information.
Avatar f tn Hi Dr. Hopefully you can answer some questions for me... I have been on statins from the age of 39 from one Med to another because my numbers would not come all the way down to normal I got a new Dr last year and he changed all my meds, started with lipitor 40mg vit d 50.000 units a weeks allopurinol.
Avatar f tn Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
Avatar n tn Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on. I drink daily about two beers and then 3 drinks total of 10 to 12 oz of liquor. I have measured it so this is very accurate. How high are these readings? I am also on a very restrictive low-carbohydrate diet. Could this be causing the problem?
Avatar m tn My father is 51 years old now and in August 2008 had a heart attack, the doctor advised him to use lipitor, lowplat.mepresor and loprine, his ALT and AST count in november 2008 was 30 and 22 respectively, by the use of lipitor his ALT ans AST count raised to 2246 and 1280 ... clearly above normal... doctor advised him t leave the use of lipitor. my question t you is ... by leaving lipitor will the count decrease?? or what should be done??
Avatar f tn Certain other cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) and niacin (Niacor, Niaspan), increase the risk of liver problems even more in people who take statins. Although liver problems are rare, your doctor will likely order a liver enzyme test before or shortly after you begin to take a statin. You shouldn't need any additional liver enzyme tests unless you begin to have signs or symptoms of trouble with your liver.
Avatar n tn Lori, all the cholesterol meds work in slightly different fashions, so you may want to consider talking to your doc about trying a different brand like Crestor, or? You could also discuss the use of red yeast rice, if your doc is a functional medicine doc, or perhaps think about trying the niacin-based meds. Cholesterol meds can cause muscle weakness and pain. No matter what you're on in the future, make sure the doc checks your enzyme levels regularly.
Avatar n tn i take fish oil , flaxseed and medamusal.
2121656 tn?1395674749 I forgot to ask two more questions in my above post. Is swimming in a chlorine pool ok with high liver enzymes as stated above, or will the chlorine elevate them more? my husband & I just purchased a pool and PCP said it's ok to swim in Chlorine. However, I'm skeptical in doing so.
1583640 tn?1296674030 Please remember that increased liver enzymes have many causes, including heart disease and aging. I hope your doctor has tried to find a cause of your increased liver panels and not just written it off as statin use as there may still be an underlying issue.
Avatar n tn Remember that these drugs [statins] are often associated with side-effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss, liver problems, muscle weakness, muscle pain, peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy due to a depletion of Coenzyme Q10.
Avatar m tn sn95, your Rx dose is pretty high. So it is possible that all the lifestyle change combined with med caused the significant drop. However, I just came back from my doctor's office who gave me a GI referral to check for potential liver disease. I had a LDL drop from 170s to 50s and TG increase from 100 to 200 during the same time, accompanied by abdominal pain, bloating, mid-back pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, etc.
Avatar f tn Not sure what medication could be causing this. Does he have any liver problems? It could be cased by cirrhosis and is sometimes called fetor hepaticus.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Hi there! I'm thankful for this site to get a insight into understanding medical diagnoses. Before I get started, I would like to thank you for all you do and taking the time in reviewing my post. Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.
Avatar f tn I also have high cholesterol and a fatty liver. My glucose is 116 and A1C is 7. My liver biopsy is stage 2, grade 2, no cirrohsis. My gasto doctor told me that I have a 40% chance of cure on standard treatment because of my other health problems. He suggested Metformin and lipitor as treatment for my fatty liver and then I could go on the interferon and copegus treatment. I am very confused at this point. I am afraid to start these drugs. Can I take this medication with the hep C treatment.
Avatar f tn Is there a relation to this and liver or kidney disease? I have this every day now -especially at night . Meds- none new but I do take atenolol rapid heart beat .Ambien. lipitor, prozac.325 mg. aspirin, daily. The finger tips bother me most. Both hands started at the same time so I doubt because of this that it would be carpal tunnel? i was tested for diabetes recently and it was negative =.there is a family history .
10996785 tn?1432812977 Because cholesterol is necessary to health and to production of hormones and absorption and movement of fat soluble nutrients cutting it with a drug will have some beneficial consequences if cutting cholesterol is necessary (which it is much less often than the drug is given to people) but also negative consequences. Statins are also highly liver toxic. They should only be taken when absolutely necessary.
Avatar f tn AST on upper end of normal at 40. The doctor said to stop the Lipitor...but stay on the Zetia...... and retest in 1-1/2 weeks which he did this past Sept. 30th. His ALP came down to normal at 91, his ALT stayed the same at 79, his AST stayed relatively the same at 42, but his GGTP went quite high at 240. The doctor's office called and told him to come in next week.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know why the drug information for Lipitor says that it can cause problems for some people with hypothyroidism? I know that Lipotor can artiificially lower TSH and cause a false positive for hyperthyroidism.
