My father is 51 years old now and in August 2008 had a heart attack,the doctor advised him to use lipitor,lowplat.mepresor and loprine, his ALT and AST count in november 2008 was 30 and 22 respectively, by the use of lipitor his ALT ans AST count raised to 2246 and 1280 ... clearly above normal... doctor advised him t leave the use of lipitor. my question t you is ... by leaving lipitor will the count decrease?? or what should be done??
I was on lipitor was many years but no doctor ever checked my blood. Last year I went off of this med because when I was hospitalized for something else they discovered that my liver enzymes were high. I'm still off lipitor and my enzymes flutuate from high normal to high. I'm wondering if the lipitor did damage to my liver. Also, I have some neurological issues which includes my muscles. Am wondering if the lipitor caused this. My total cholesteral is 226 and my LDL is 79.
Sometimes Lipitor can cause mild elevations in liver enzymes, such as AST and ALT. Usually, this is just monitored. If the enzymes increase to 3 times the upper limit of normal, then the medication is usually stopped. Having an AST of 45 is not too worrisome, but just make sure your doctor rechecks it in about 3 months.
Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
AST on upper end of normal at 40. The doctor said to stop the Lipitor...but stay on the Zetia...... and retest in 1-1/2 weeks which he did this past Sept. 30th. His ALP came down to normal at 91, his ALT stayed the same at 79, his AST stayed relatively the same at 42, but his GGTP went quite high at 240. The doctor's office called and told him to come in next week.
was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on.
I drink daily about two beers and then 3 drinks total of 10 to 12 oz of liquor. I have measured it so this is very accurate. How high are these readings? I am also on a very restrictive low-carbohydrate diet. Could this be causing the problem?
I have taken Lipitor for 7 years and never had elevated enzymes. I had a total hysterectomy in October 2007 and when my enzymes were tested in January 2008 (twice) they were 90. My doctor ruled out Hepitis and ordered an Ultrasound of the Liver. It came back showing my liver was enlarged and all I was told is we will retest in a while. I AM WORRIED TO DEATH! Could it be my hormone patch? It is the only new thing I am taking. Will my liver go back to normal size or will it stay enlarged?
I'v had elevated liver enzymes for several years too. I'v had a biopsy and ultrasound and everything inbetween. They haven't found anything wrong with my liver. My doctor said he isn't worried about sense the biopsy came back normal, but he just wants to keep an eye on it to make sure the levels don't increase dramatically. I think that some people just have higher than normal levels of these enzymes in their system.
AST & ALT are liver enzymes that increase when there is inflammation in the liver.
5 years prior to that, I was also on Statins for cholesterol which elevate liver enzymes and my levels were AST 30 0-40 and ALT 49 0-55 I have been on Lipitor 10 to 20mg for years, although I do not drink any alcohol because that also elevates liver enzymes, and being on statins I did not want the risk of raising them more.
LIPITOR should be used with caution in patients who consume substantial quantities of alcohol and/or have a history of liver disease. Active liver disease or unexplained persistent transaminase elevations are contraindications to the use of LIPITOR [see CONTRAINDICATIONS]."

Only a liver specialist can tell you what medicines are safe for you to take based on your particular advanced liver disease.
People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
How do they determined that my elevated liver enzymes are due to a fatty liver. and if it is due to a fatty liver should the liever enzymes continue to rise and MOST OF ALL does elevated liver enzymes mean that my liver is disease or fatty. If it is due to fatty liver will my enzymes continue to rise and is it just normal for them to continue to raise. What is normal if it is due to fatty liver or diabetess II?
The Fenofibrate can cause bloating indigestion, stomach pain, and increased liver enzymes or liver problems in addition to other side effects. The Zetia can cause some of these too. Have they tested your liver enzymes yet? If so were they normal? There are other drugs for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides that work as well. You can ask him to have you try Lipitor (generic) and there is now a generic Niaspan. I know because my husband is on it.
