Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and liver disease

lipitor

Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
Avatar n tn You should contact your doctor to rule out any serious condition such as liver, kidney disease. Take care and thanks for your question.
Avatar n tn Recent studies have found that statins like Lipitor acutally improve liver function in patients with liver disease and the incidence rate of liver failure is not turning out to be as high as originally thought. In fact, the FDA is considering dropping the liver failure side effect from the patient leaflet and consumer information.
Avatar f tn LIPITOR should be used with caution in patients who consume substantial quantities of alcohol and/or have a history of liver disease. Active liver disease or unexplained persistent transaminase elevations are contraindications to the use of LIPITOR [see CONTRAINDICATIONS]." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only a liver specialist can tell you what medicines are safe for you to take based on your particular advanced liver disease.
Avatar f tn Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
Avatar n tn Is there any correlation between Raynaud's, Lipitor, and coronoary artery disease???? I have been plagued with blanching of my fingers, they then turn dark purple and painful rewarming. Having been diagnosed with microvascular disease, is this symptom of greater concern??
Avatar m tn sn95, your Rx dose is pretty high. So it is possible that all the lifestyle change combined with med caused the significant drop. However, I just came back from my doctor's office who gave me a GI referral to check for potential liver disease. I had a LDL drop from 170s to 50s and TG increase from 100 to 200 during the same time, accompanied by abdominal pain, bloating, mid-back pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, etc.
Avatar m tn My father is 51 years old now and in August 2008 had a heart attack, the doctor advised him to use lipitor, lowplat.mepresor and loprine, his ALT and AST count in november 2008 was 30 and 22 respectively, by the use of lipitor his ALT ans AST count raised to 2246 and 1280 ... clearly above normal... doctor advised him t leave the use of lipitor. my question t you is ... by leaving lipitor will the count decrease?? or what should be done??
Avatar n tn Do you know for example, you are still prone to liver cancer (HCC) even after clearing the cause of your liver disease because your liver progressed to cirrhosis? This is very important. Hasn't your doctor told you this? Are you getting imaging of the abdomen every 6 months and AFP levels taken? Good luck.
Avatar n tn Remember that these drugs [statins] are often associated with side-effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss, liver problems, muscle weakness, muscle pain, peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy due to a depletion of Coenzyme Q10.
Avatar n tn Lori, all the cholesterol meds work in slightly different fashions, so you may want to consider talking to your doc about trying a different brand like Crestor, or? You could also discuss the use of red yeast rice, if your doc is a functional medicine doc, or perhaps think about trying the niacin-based meds. Cholesterol meds can cause muscle weakness and pain. No matter what you're on in the future, make sure the doc checks your enzyme levels regularly.
2121656 tn?1395674749 I forgot to ask two more questions in my above post. Is swimming in a chlorine pool ok with high liver enzymes as stated above, or will the chlorine elevate them more? my husband & I just purchased a pool and PCP said it's ok to swim in Chlorine. However, I'm skeptical in doing so.
1583640 tn?1296674030 Please remember that increased liver enzymes have many causes, including heart disease and aging. I hope your doctor has tried to find a cause of your increased liver panels and not just written it off as statin use as there may still be an underlying issue.
Avatar f tn Drs said it was caused by taking Lipitor. He had history of a fatty liver also. The evening before he passed away, my husband was visiting him and when he was leaving and walking down the hallway he heard my pap coughing. My husband went back into the room and gave him a tissue. When he stopped coughing he asked my husband to throw it away. My husband was alarmed when he seen the tissue filled with what looked to be coffee grounds. He went to the nurses station and told them.
Avatar f tn Is there a relation to this and liver or kidney disease? I have this every day now -especially at night . Meds- none new but I do take atenolol rapid heart beat .Ambien. lipitor, prozac.325 mg. aspirin, daily. The finger tips bother me most. Both hands started at the same time so I doubt because of this that it would be carpal tunnel? i was tested for diabetes recently and it was negative =.there is a family history .
Avatar n tn What is the problem: Lipitor. Lipitor and other statins have a long list of adverse health problems including liver damage, kidney failure, heart failure, cataracts and diabetes.
Avatar n tn Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on. I drink daily about two beers and then 3 drinks total of 10 to 12 oz of liquor. I have measured it so this is very accurate. How high are these readings? I am also on a very restrictive low-carbohydrate diet. Could this be causing the problem?
Avatar f tn I have always been monitored every 3_4 months with blood work and he put me on this lipitor 7/11 and I complained about the ide effects and he still increased it in 10/11 because he didn't see liver damage to 80mg from 40mg along with the 200mg of fenofibrate.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Hi there! I'm thankful for this site to get a insight into understanding medical diagnoses. Before I get started, I would like to thank you for all you do and taking the time in reviewing my post. Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.
10996785 tn?1432812977 LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not for everyone, including anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to LIPITOR. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop taking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away. If you take LIPITOR tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness.
Avatar n tn A solide nodule was discovered a year and half ago, and in connection therewith I also became diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. At that time I hade started taking Lipitor, 10 mg, for high cholesterol. My endoctrinologist, an expert on thyroids, decided against thyroid hormone replacement therapy. I am supposed to see him once a year, but I see a surgeon twice a year to check on the nodule.
Avatar n tn s primary care doctor (the doctor he had for ten years prior to knowing he had liver disease) missed more than a few signals of his having liver disease. His cholestoral level was about 143, yet at one point he prescribed "Lipitor" for him (approximately six - eight months prior to his finding out he had Hep C and liver disease). Lucky for my husband, we never filled that prescription.
Avatar m tn No new disease seemed to form. Even 10% blockages grew to 90% + and had to be stented. Every year for three years I was in and out of hospital having more intervention. For the last 2 years I've had no stents, and things seemed to have settled down now. I hope this means that because there is no more existing disease un-stented that nothing new will form. I did notice that with times of extreme stress, this seemed to accelerate the formation of existing disease into much larger blockages.
