Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and hepatitis

lipitor

Avatar m tn My father is 51 years old now and in August 2008 had a heart attack, the doctor advised him to use lipitor, lowplat.mepresor and loprine, his ALT and AST count in november 2008 was 30 and 22 respectively, by the use of lipitor his ALT ans AST count raised to 2246 and 1280 ... clearly above normal... doctor advised him t leave the use of lipitor. my question t you is ... by leaving lipitor will the count decrease?? or what should be done??
Avatar n tn Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on. I drink daily about two beers and then 3 drinks total of 10 to 12 oz of liquor. I have measured it so this is very accurate. How high are these readings? I am also on a very restrictive low-carbohydrate diet. Could this be causing the problem?
Avatar f tn But they came back down into normal range by the next reading about 2 months later and have stayed normal since. Symptoms include tired and muscle aches, but he also has low testosterone due to testicular failure which could be causing these symptoms as well He testsed positive and then it was confirmed on another test for antibodies with a 1.5 s/co ratio. Anyone know what the ration means? Is this really high for antibodies?
Avatar n tn On my own a week ago, I stopped the lipitor and the lipitor only. For the first time in 5 yrs i have no more hives. Why is there not more articles published or side effects like mine posted for lipitor??? What is your feeling on the hives from Lipitor??
Avatar f tn My good cholesterol is high, but my bad cholesterol is now higher than normal again and my regular doctor wants me back on Lipitor. I am very hesitant due to the Alpha-1 carrier status and the autoantibodies. Neither parent has heart problems or cancer, but my dad was stricken with autoimmune transverse myelitis in September 2008. My sister has Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I tested negative for that.
Avatar n tn this sounds like a drug-induced hepatitis (DILI) triggered by the statin. These can cause an autoimmune-hepatitis and almost always should get better as long as the offending agent is discontinued. the ALT is getting better which is a good prognostic sign--the bilirubin always lags behind. it can sometimes take several months for total resolution. the INR is OK so I think she should fare well. I have seen similar cases.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Lipitor for the last 10 years and lately I have developed muscle pains. I was told the pain might be because of the Lipitor. I stopped taking them for a couple of months, the pain was much less however my cloestrol level was back to 290. I would appreciate any insight or suggestions.
Avatar f tn There is much controversy about cholesterol, but it is muted because of pharmaceutical financial interests in statins. Half of those who die of strokes or heart attacks have no history of high cholesterol. DeBakey discounted cholesterol. My own doctor pays no attention to it. What is the true role of cholesterol and how should one proceed? I don't know, but I won't take Lipitor.
1995824 tn?1330379049 It is very common with us. I went on Lipitor and it helped greatly. My doctor monitors my enzymes and if they start to spike we'll try something else. Look for Mike Simon's threads on this they are very informative. Statins are our friends we just have to be more careful.
Avatar f tn The Lipitor package insert recommends that a test of your liver function should be done prior to and at 12 weeks following both the start of therapy with Lipitor and any increase of dose, and periodically (for example, every six months) thereafter. If there are any changes in your liver function, drinking alcohol may make it worse.
Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
Avatar n tn If hypothyrodism can cause high cholesterol is it not better to take thyorid hormone replacement than Lipitor?
577132 tn?1314266526 My situation is the same as yours my cholesterol and triglycerides are through the roof. The doctor insisted I start Lipitor at a very high dose compared to what I've seen others on.......I kept insisting I couldn't take it because of my liver but he was like honey at this point you really have no choice. Now it's back to watching LFTs again. My BP was always historically very low and at the check up he prescribed the lipitor it was 180/110.....so I figured he probably was right.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.'s once a day and lipitor 10 mg.'s once a day for about 6 yrs. now. I've now been taken off the medicine's now due to high liver enzymes. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver in 2008.
362971 tn?1201987034 I have been getting recurring bouts of Pericarditis since I treated with Interferon succesfully for hepatitis c. I have had 4 bouts of it in 15 months. None of the specialists that I have seen know what causes it to keep coming back. I recently did some blood work and my hsCRP was "25". It shouldn't be above "1". It measures the amount of inflamation in your body.
Avatar m tn i have this neck back and chest pain do you think i have because i take lipitor 40 mg pleae let emknow .
Avatar m tn I know that Lipotor can artiificially lower TSH and cause a false positive for hyperthyroidism.

Avatar f tn I stopped the lipitor 3 days ago and the pain in my legs has stopped and feet are some better. I go to the dr. soon so I will tell her. I have stopped the lipitor before for a few days and gotten back to normal.
Avatar f tn had coiling embolisation done with stent due to an unruptured aneurysm on the right ICA. returned to hospital afterwards due to TIA symptoms and was given Lipitor as cholesterol level was borderline and given just to make sure that it is not causing the "mini-stroke". I have been given Plavix and aspirin from the onset and I am still on it.
382218 tn?1341181487 ) Rita - I got curious too about Lipitor and here is some info I found. I still need to take some time to read through it all. It looks like this idea has been around a while and I'm surprised I hadn't come across it till now. http://www.mssociety.ca/en/research/meddmmo-oralLipitor-april7.htm OK here is a really long link, if it doesn't work just go to National Institutues of Health web site (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/index.
Avatar f tn My mom wad diagnosed last year with drug induced autoimmune hepatitis, and you helped us a lot months ago. I understand high level of AMA is related to PBC and I was wondering if you can give any advice on that. Also, could Hashimoto cause AMA to be positive too?
3170462 tn?1344717552 I was wondering if anyone here has experienced hair loss from taking a statin. My husband was placed on Lipitor about 5 months ago and has noticed that he's losing more than a normal amount of hair. His hairline isn't receding; it's thinning from all over.
Avatar f tn t know the reason of the shoulder pain. But my husband thinks that this is happening becoz of Liptor . He stopped taking lipitor and trying to take some Ayurveda medicine . He still complains about the should pain. Please advise.
Avatar m tn Hi all, My father had a triple by pass surgery about 18 months ago, and has been taking Lipitor, Perondopril and Atenolol. He's been getting abnormal hair growth on one side of his leg and back and chest since he's been on Lipitor, and Perondopril. I googled to see what I could find, and found this site saying that Lipitor can cause abnormal hair growth. http://www****.com/ds/lipitor/hair%20growth%20abnormal/ My question is, has anyone else taking Lipitor experience this?
Avatar f tn It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
10996785 tn?1432812977 s from detox, pneumonia, and a stroke. with the stroke, which is considered small and deep in my cerebellum, my vision and balance was effected. My balance was already damage from the benzo's and alcohol abuse. Lately some of you might have read my last thread that I haven't been feeling well. Actually I haven't felt well for a very long time. I did see my PCP yesterday and we all agreed that the trazodone was the one med that was making me very sluggish.
Avatar n tn Has he talked to a doctor about his symptoms, and has blood been drawn to determine if there are adverse reactions with the Lipitor? I'm 67 also, had a heart attack nine years ago, but have a lot of stents in between, so your husband and I have lots in common! I also recently experienced increase fatigue, some unintended weight loss and I'm short of breath, and a stress test last week indicated new blockages, I'll see the doc next week to see what's next for me.
