Lipitor and grapefruit doctor

Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and grapefruit doctor

lipitor

Julie, if you’re going to drink a lot of grapefruit juice and include it with other meds, be sure to discuss it with the doctor.
Don't take these interactions lightly, as some can cause potentially dangerous health problems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming any grapefruit products or citrus fruits if you take prescription medications. You may need to eliminate grapefruit products from your diet. Simply taking your medication and grapefruit product at different times doesn't stop the interaction.
One thing I have read about is Grapefruit Juice helping in clearing HCV. Since reading this I have started drinking Grapefruit Juice daily. The way I see it is it is not going to hurt me either way to drink it. But I was wondering how many here really believe that drinking Grapefruit Juice can help fight off HCV? I am trying everything I can to help me try and have spontaneous clearance. I don't really care for the taste but have been putting it down just incase.
I've had episodes of burning type muscle pain in my legs and arms, some numbness and tingling along with general feeling of nausea and malaise. My doctor feels this could be because of the Lipitor and I stopped taking it 4 days ago. How long until I can expect to see improvement? My liver enzymes were always within normal range and blood work shows no elevated white count or anemia. Thanks.
They occur mostly at night, but bending my leg too much can also trigger an attack. My pharmacist says its from the Lipitor. My doctor says its from Vitamin D and Magnesium deficiencies. I think she's too close to the situation and would like to consult another doctor, but don't know what kind of specialist to see about muscle problems. Any suggestions?
Norpace) If you don't know if the medicine you are taking interacts with grapefruit, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor usually can prescribe another medicine that doesn't interact with grapefruit.
It's probably best if you call your doctor or pharmacist, grapefruit can increase the effects of some medications; but I don't know it the same is true for anit-biotics.
She might be thinking of atorvastatin. With some of the statin drugs like Lipitor, you can't use grapefruit juice.
I see there are other ways to lower cholesterol than pharmacy drugs, like grapefruit, etc, but that these interfere with both Lipitor and Atenenol. While on medication, I have kept up a considerable exercise plan and have significantly altered my diet. Cholesterol went from total 260 (including a Bad number for Good cholesterol) to between 120 and 150, depending, with good cholesterol now excellent. Average BP went from roughly 180/120 to usually 100/65.
I have coronary artery disease, and i take 20 mg of lipitor and 2 low dose aspirin a day. My doctor is new and tells me my problems are my lipitor, they may have to lower my dose. My old doctor had me on 10 mg a day, and somehow the pharmacy gave me 20 mg and it stuck at that. My docotr never ordered that, but i ended up always getting it. However i have a a 90 percent blockage of my coronary artery and had surgery, but no stent.
Drugs That Interact With Grapefruit Juice Here are some drugs that interact with grapefruit juice. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned about any of your medications.
Despite being the first statin it is not the best studied as well, and the evidence we now have regarding the benefits from statins in heart disease come primarily from other more powerful statins ( such as zocor pravachol or lipitor). I would recommend you to change to one of these, and also consider crestor as an option, despite the lack of mortality data from this particular medication, because of its improved metabolic profile and less deleterious effects on hdl levels.
Other interventions may include switching the Lipitor to Crestor, which does not decrease the HDL to the same level as Lipitor, dietary and lifestyle modifications, or medications such as Gemfibrozil.benzofibrate/fenofibrate, whcih actually have some proven clinical effectiveness. The reason we don't routinely use them in patients already on Statins, is the increased event rate of myopathy and hepatitis.
Can a doctor here comment on the following numbers: Total Cholesterol: 125 mg/dL HDL: 33 mg/dL Triglycerides: 64 mg/dL LDL = 79 mg/dL ... calculated by TC - HDL - TriG / 5 Specifically, is the HDL number dangerously low, and would that by itself put me at risk for heart disease later on in life, irrespective of the relatively low LDL and TriG. These numbers were taken after a 14 hour fast. I'm 40, a non-smoker, blood pressure is 115/75.
My doctor has recommended an IMT (Ultrasound to check the thickness of the arteries in the neck) test and a CT angio of the coronaries and also going to put me on medication to control my cholestrol. I have done my IMT test and the results are normal. My question is 1) Do i need to do a CT angio of the coronaries 2) Do I need to be put on medication to control my cholestrol. 3) Do you advise a second opinion, or the current course of action the best possible.
You don't mix grapefruit with certain (if not most) cholestrial meds such as Lipitor and others. But Cranberry juice and tx, yum yum.....
HR (all resting) can be anywhere from 98/65 64 to 167/103 102. I don't get white coat symptoms at the doctors office. I take Diazide/Maxide (for BP/HR and edema), Lopressor (for BP/HR)and low dose aspirin (for atrial septal aneurysm) along with Lipitor (for high hsCRP). I get lightheaded often no matter where my level seems to be. It's odd when it is low it feels like it is pounding like crazy. I have checked it at home thinking it would be high and it is not.
Pain in the joints and legs has gotten worse. Saw doctor Saturday. He said it is a side effect of the meds. Stopped taking the Lipitor to see if that helps. Told the doctor my head is in a fog after taking all my morning meds which I split up some at 7AM and some at 9AM. BP has been better, goal is to keep it at or below 150 over 100. Which I have been able to do. I am in Chicago. I have been staying out of the heat and taking it easy. I started drinking lots of water and eating healthy.
his TSH bottomed out and his doctor thought he was hyper (based on TSH only), so started backing off on his thyroid med -- didn't take long at all to send him off to hypo he//........
I don't think anyone is saying that people should rush out and start taking statins, but it's certainly a potentially exciting development, and anyone (like in a position I was once in) holding off from statins because of the perceived risk/reward ratio might revisit the idea with their doctor. And for those that don't need statins, still something to discuss with their doctors as well as keeping an eye on future studies/developments. A few points you made.
there are some medication and I am not sure if you are on one of them, I want say lipitor (can't remember) you can't have with grapefruit or certian foods due to the way it breaks down it you body. hopefully you will be back on your feet soon.
I just read the doctors second response and I don't find it that puzzling. Allthough Agatston recommends statins as part of his "aggressive prevention" routine, I am not sure he is talking about asymptomatic 30 year olds. The reason, I believe, statins weren't recommended by the on line doc is because of your age and the fact statins have only been available for 20 years.
I am as guilty as the next one of playing doctor on the internet, so any time I can listen to someone with credentials, I like to do that. It upsets me when people quote studies and believe them as gospel especially when they are talking about rats. I've been around a long time and I still tend to ask my doc if a particular study is valid. It has sure shown me what I don't know. Yes, I talk to the "real and esteemed" MKA almost everyday.
My pain never stopped after that- I was experiencing constant chest pressure and shortness of breath but my doctor here did not pay any attention. He was saying that “etiology of my pain is not known but it shouldn’t be anything cardiac since my stress test was ok”.Last month I ended up in the emergency room with re-stenosis /one of the stents was clogged 99% and another stent was placed on the top of those two. This time was Xience 5- drug eluted stent that went on the top of the other two.
I discussed this with my doctor who said that meant I had been exposed to Hep C but my body was taking care of it (dunce). I told every doctor I ever saw about this but only one doctor did a liver panel workup that showed my liver functions as normal - so I was put on Lipitor for high cholesterol. Finally, this year I got the proper blood work done by my GI doctor and it showed that I do have Hep C. My VL is 6,000,000. I am genotype 2.
I have been on prilosec BID for 3 years, for GERD, and lipitor for cholesterol. However, I get bouts of severe stomach distress that presents as eggy, foul-tasting burping, then stomach cramping, bloating and nausea. It is pretty debilitating for a whole day, and makes me feel horrible. Bentyl doesn't help much, nor does Gaviscon. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this?? Is it the pylorus, or lactose intolerance...something totally different that my doctor and I are missing?
These are small particle of hard food like a part of a peanut shards after being chewed up.. or really small pills like 10mg lipitor (I don't know how many of the liptors have literally dissolved back there instead of my stomach) Almost every night I have something stuck there it causes my sinus to swell in the during sleep and can sometimes get painful if it does not get dislodge. Sometimes I can dislodge it by rattle my sinus on that side.
