My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it.
Wellbutrin is more stimulating than Lexapro, so it causes less weight gain and less loss of libido. Doesn't mean it's a weight loss aid, just means it doesn't promote weight gain the way ssris do with some people because it doesn't slow the metabolism. The weight loss should come over time if you stay off the ssris, assuming the wellbutrin is working for you as an antidepressant.
People taking SSRIs like Lexapro can complain about weight gain; and there are many that complain about weight loss. Remember, that anxiety can often lead to depression which in itself can cause weight gain for a viarity of reasons. I actually lost weight while taking an SSRI, but I think it had to do a lot more with a normal exercise routine and watching what I ate.
They start feeling better, eat more normally and gain weight. Same with weight loss, some folks eat when anxious or depressed and when they feel better, that compulsion is less and they lose weight. This is part of the weight loss and weight gain that you see with antidepressants. And why any same antidepressant can cause a different weight reaction (gain, loss or neutral) in different people who take it.
Some people complain about weight gain while on SSRIs like Paxil and others even complain about weight loss. What has been really helpful for me is ensuring that I watch what I eat and exercise regularly. Remember, quite often, or weight gain has more to do with our lifestyle than what we are taking sometimes in my experience. Do you exercise regularly and watch what you eat? Keep us posted!
m not sure of the weight gain as I have not gained any weight and I did not have any thoughts of killing myself. Actually quite the opposite. The only think I am dealing is vivid dreams at night. My doctor is looking into possibly changing my dosage. He thinks it may be a bit to much for me.

There are plenty of antidpressants on the market and sure there are ones that do not cause weight gain. In fact some might cause weight loss. My hypo sister takes lexapro, she hasn't gained weight, in fact she lost big time, although not saying it is due to lexapro. Thyroid treatment should be based on the latest TSH level with another test in 4 to 6 weeks to confirm the first TSH test. Treatment should not be based on previous years because TSH can go back to normal in some people.
i ve read many articles were anti/depres can cause weight gain esp lexapro. i ve also read where opiates cause puffiness...not sure about weight gain. when i was on opiates i was thin because i never ate too much...after opiates i ate like crazy...still do...substituting one addiction for another. i need a good healthy diet. i eat too much junk...
I was on Effexor XR for a few months, but I couldn't take getting sick whenever I forgot to take a dose. My doctor switched me to Pristiq, which works the same way as effexor.
I haven't had any problems with weight gain on either of the meds, though. I've actually lost a bit of weight since starting pristiq. I've been on it for months and my depression and anxiety have been put in their place!

Gained 50 pounds on Paxil, lost most when I went off but only because withdrawal drove me so crazy I couldn't eat. Now on Lexapro, gaining weight again. On the other hand, that's not why I went off Paxil, I didn't like the weight gain, but like bastel, it was a heck of a lot better than not being able to go anywhere.
I am trying to find a good medication that does NOT cause weight gain. Please do not tell me SSRI do not cause weight gain. I was on Zoloft for many years & it caused weight gain. Everytime I asked my doctor if it could be the medicine he said "No", so I tried & tried to get the 30 lbs off I had put on from it. I ate a good diet & worked out all the time.. NOTHING. point(stopped working) and i was experiencing really bad depression/anxiety again after being on zoloft for 18months. My doc tried Lexapro but i experienced very fast weight gain since being on it so he stopped it. i saw him tonight for a check up appointment on the Medication adjustments. Being the lexapro made me gain weight He decided to try effexor for me I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this medication? I've heard a side effect is actually weight loss?
I was looking back on my weight loss chart and saw that within 3 weeks of starting lexapro each time, I had a significant weight gain. I went from 175 to 185 the first time and then continued to gain despite following the program and exercising. When I went off the med, the weight began to drop and I made it down below 200. I started it again in February this year and within 3 weeks, here came another 10 pounds and it's been steadilly going up ever since.
This is a common complaint. Most of us who need antidepressants wind up gaining weight no matter what we do. Welllbutrin is touted as one that won't mess with weight or libido. It made me jittery and gave me severe joint pains ...then finally diarrhea:).
Too bad the folks in the labs can't come up with something that won't cause obesity. Oh..yep...Lexapro..very popular a few years back: I tried a couple of times ...gastric distress was all I got out of it.
Is ssri weight gain dose dependent?
I was wondering, at what dosage did you notice a gain or loss of weight? I've read about people either gaining or losing weight, but no one says what dosage they're on. I'm taking 25mg right now and the doc and I were talking of moving me to 50mg. Standing at a whopping 5ft, I of course worry about the weight gain.
Hi Jane, there is overlap between anxiety and depression, and some of the meds can treat the symptoms of both. Tell your doc that you are concerned about weight gain- again, some meds are better than others in that regard. The older tricyclic anti-depressants tended to cause weight gain, but the SSRI's (zoloft, prozac, wellbutrin, lexapro, effexor, etc) which are used for anxiety and depression now as the first line treatment- not so much. In some people they even cause a slight loss.
Sometimes you can avoid this side effect by either taking wellbutrin, a very stimulating antidepressant, or combining wellbutrin with an ssri to counteract this effect. I don't think constipation would lead to the weight gain, but three pounds isn't really much of a gain. We all fluctuate some normally.
once the medication is our of your system the side effects will have gone away, what you are experiencing is most likely due to another medical condition or a symptom of depression/anxiety/etc whatever the reason you were taking the lexapro for, if it was for depression, a common symptom of depression is weight gain/weight loss. i was on zoloft for a bit and ballooned from 140 to 160 in about 2 months, i came off it eventually and lost the weight, but i also wasnt 'depressed'.
