Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro weight loss depression

lexapro

Avatar m tn My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it.
Avatar f tn There are plenty of antidpressants on the market and sure there are ones that do not cause weight gain. In fact some might cause weight loss. My hypo sister takes lexapro, she hasn't gained weight, in fact she lost big time, although not saying it is due to lexapro. Thyroid treatment should be based on the latest TSH level with another test in 4 to 6 weeks to confirm the first TSH test. Treatment should not be based on previous years because TSH can go back to normal in some people.
Avatar f tn People taking SSRIs like Lexapro can complain about weight gain; and there are many that complain about weight loss. Remember, that anxiety can often lead to depression which in itself can cause weight gain for a viarity of reasons. I actually lost weight while taking an SSRI, but I think it had to do a lot more with a normal exercise routine and watching what I ate.
Avatar f tn Lexapro can cause weight loss or weight gain. I have heard about Wellbutrin for weight loss. But I wouldn't recommend that he just starts using it again for weight loss. It was for sepression so the dosage prescibed was for that condition. Encourage him to see a doctor.
Avatar n tn once the medication is our of your system the side effects will have gone away, what you are experiencing is most likely due to another medical condition or a symptom of depression/anxiety/etc whatever the reason you were taking the lexapro for, if it was for depression, a common symptom of depression is weight gain/weight loss. i was on zoloft for a bit and ballooned from 140 to 160 in about 2 months, i came off it eventually and lost the weight, but i also wasnt 'depressed'.
480705 tn?1208228550 Not a good drug for keeping weight off. The depression drugs are rather sneaky with weight, so I hope that if the Lexapro fixes your problems that it doesn't cause weight gain. I took it for 5 weeks back a while ago and did well with had no weight gain. Thankfully it's an easy drug to get on and get off of. I wish you well and can get some answers for your medical issues.
Avatar m tn point(stopped working) and i was experiencing really bad depression/anxiety again after being on zoloft for 18months. My doc tried Lexapro but i experienced very fast weight gain since being on it so he stopped it. i saw him tonight for a check up appointment on the Medication adjustments. Being the lexapro made me gain weight He decided to try effexor for me I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this medication? I've heard a side effect is actually weight loss?
Avatar f tn Depression has made me gain 20 pounds in a year, and NOT from "just eating." I have spent the whole year trying to work it off - to no avail. I go to the gym, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, I do some form of exercise at least 3 days a week, and I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin. I'm losing it because of the limited results from working out as well as the "miracle weight loss drug" Wellbutrin. EVERYONE seems to lose weight on it!
616534 tn?1233236497 Is there anyone out there who has taken Lexapro and not gained weight? My doctor just took me off Effexor and put me on Lexapro. My weight is part of my depression. I can't afford to gain.
415867 tn?1323365503 In fact, Meridia, a weight-loss drug, is an SNRI. Another SNRI, Effexor, has no weight-loss properties, but it is an antidepressant. This shows that tiny changes in chemical structure can have big effects on the brain. I take Wellbutrin which is a SNRI, I have no loss of sex drive what so ever, and while I have put on weight I don't think it is related to the drug. I think it is related to my eating habits in that I eat crap all the time and need to knock that out of my diet.
Avatar f tn I remember being a puffy mute on lexapro and zyprexa. Not only was my usual 130 pound jewish frame elevated to 170 within months I felt suicidal for the first time in my life. I found a combo of wellbutrin/zoloft that seems to serve me well. After hearing my complaints of fatigue he added adderall. It does help but it's but you can develop tolerance fairly quickly and it's drawing on your body's essential vitality (chi) to do this.
Avatar f tn depression, anxiety, panic attacks, restless leg syndrome, dizziness, and loss of impulse control meaning I will feel immediately FURIOUS over something as small as not being able to put my contact in the first time. This is NOT like me. Please help me. I can't live like this. Wellbutrin is not working out for me. I don't know a safe way to get off of it and get my life back.
Avatar m tn My daughter is transitioning from lexapro to prozac. She suffers from clinical depression...diagnosed over 1.5 years ago. She seems worse than ever and will barely get out of bed, listless comes to mind. Is this to be expected?
Avatar f tn Has anyone taken Lexapro? If so, did you gain weight on it or experience other side effects? Did it give you motivation to do things again? My neuro doc prescribed it (10 mg) but I'm not sure if this is any good... Thanks!!
Avatar f tn I have not taken Lexapro, but I have taken other SSRIs (Prozac, Effexor and Cymbalta). All of them caused the brain zaps. Effexor was the worst offender, and I tapered it ridiculously slowly, and the problem hung on for a very long time. At least I found out it was a withdrawal problem by them - after stopping Prozac I had the brain zaps and suspected I was getting multiple sclerosis or something.
Avatar f tn I do not know what to advise you. I say be glad your depression is controlled. Look up past postings on weight loss and gain and see if you can find an answer there. I know this subject worries a lot of people.
Avatar n tn I was told by my phys. that Lexapro would not cause a weight gain while taking it for slight depression. If it causes weight gain, I need to get off this stuff. Please provide feedback.
Avatar m tn I am on Prozac now and have not experienced the numbness or weight gain (it actually can help with weight loss), so maybe you should like you said, go back on that. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Hi Lori, I just wanted to say I am on this journey with you. I've been on Lexapro for five years (with the ocassional break). I have acute chronic anxiety and panic attacks. I've been weaning off 20 mg of Lexapro. I too am beginning to experience some of the symptoms that reveal my anxiety disorder. I cannot do SSRI's anymore - I've been on Paxil and Lexapro, both left me with weight gain (which dropped off quickly), and a complete loss of creativity.
Avatar f tn Situational depression occurs during a traumatic event in one's life. For example a divorce, loss of a loved one, loss of job, serious financial issues. Most people recover with time, others seem to just slip further into depression and need to seek professional help. Therapy can help with this type of depression as well. Hope this helps.

I gained the weight back after I quit competitive running, but the hair thinning persists. Another thing to note, I have never been an illness-prone person, but lately I have been getting sick a lot and have had several infections over the past few months.

Avatar n tn I am on 20mg of Lexapro and 30mg of Remeron. Was on 10mg Lexapro and 45mg Remeron, but the weight gain is very real so I am attempting to get off the Remeron. When I asked what I could add to the Lexapro (since I have treatment resistant depression) I was told Seroquil might be a good addition. Sometimes I'm not sure if my doctor really knows what he's talking about. I don't want to gain weight on Seroquil after finally getting off Remeron.
1033596 tn?1252519593 I don't want to play doctor here or anything, but I was in a similar situation for several years. My apartment got broken into, then I moved home, and then my house literally got hit by lightening. I started taking lexapro for the Post-Traumatic Stress. I'd always been a bit of a snacker and stress-eater, but I a burdensome amount of weight from it. I asked my doctor about other alternatives to the Lexapro, and she suggested Welbutrin.
