lexapro vs celexa weight gain

m on Celexa now but am wondering if maybe Lexapro would be better since anxiety is my biggest concern. Has anyone had suggest with Lexapro. Also does Lexapro cause weight gain like Celexa?

Oh, and I went back on the Lexapro at a low dose, only half a day. Is it less likely I'd gain weight on a lesser dosage or does it not work that way?

I had the same problem when I switched form celexa to wellbutrin. Wellbutrin did nothing for me. (BTW there isn't much difference between lexapro and celexa except celexa probably won't give you much weight gain) So when Wellbutrin didn't work I wen't on paxil and gained some weight but sexual side effects remained. Then I quit paxil and now take effexor with clonazepam. I feel OK so far but still too early to judge.

Oh my goodness, I started on Celexa this week after almost a year on Lexapro, just to save money. I had no long term side effects from the lexapro (like weight gain) and when I tried to wean off (after about 6 months) because i thought i was "better" I felt like sad and that's all. So I guess what I'm asking is if there is something fishy about Celexa.

Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.

As to adding the wellbutrin, this is usually done when there is weight gain or sexual dysfunction, because wellbutrin is a stimulating antidepressant -- not usually for primary anxiety. But again, it's all trial and error. Some have tried to make it more scientific -- some believe eeg studies can tell which drugs will work and which won't and some think brain scans can tell something, but the evidence is weak.

I really need to start again a SSRI for my extreme panic disorder and I want to know if the Celexa will work to stop the panic disorder, since I took it for my social phobia at 60 mg/day back in 1999 for 6 months and it did nothing for the social anxiety and my anxiety level didn't improve on it?

I googled last night and read that Paxil is one that doesn't (usually) accelerate tremors but I read weight gain is ridiculous on it. I also read the Prozac is good too but I think Prozac is activating. I need sedating. I am glad you said that about Cymbalta. I need one that will not make my tremors worse.

Yes if you search on lexapro, it will tell you that it could cause weight gain... Since I have taken Zoloft, I havent had any weight gain...actually I have been the same weight for a while... I havent taken any other brands besides lexapro, welbutrin, zoloft, xanax, ect. Those are the only ones, I can tell you the symptoms I have had. Xanax though, if you take that, it causes you to be really sleepy... I only take it when I have pannick attacks or anxiety attacks really bad...

I did gain some on Lexapro, more on Celexa, but nothing like Paxil. But others have the opposite result, so no way of predicting.

I am fixing to start working out again and trying to eat healthier. Does anyone know if celexa hinders weight loss with proper diet and exercise.

After taking Celexa, I graduated to a new and better version called Lexapro. This was about 2 years ago. Recently, with my AFib issues, both my cardiologist and family doctor have taken issue with it. I'm unclear why and will ask them after I get my cardiovesion, but I think it is a "mood elevator" and with my heart thumping all the time anyway, the last thing I need is to take something that makes it go faster. I will have a more definitive answer for you soon.

Celexa is not known for causing weight gain so you should be fine in that dept. I'm on Abilify too and it is expensive but I gave up a few other extras to stay on it because it's so hard to find the right medication. Abilify is also not known for weight gain. If you are doing good, try to stay on it because changing meds can be absolute hell. I went off abilify and went through a few months of suffering on other drugs before I came right bck to it.

My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?

Hi: I have general anxiety with a tendency towards social anxiety. I used to have panic attacks but haven't had one in a couple years. I also suffer with depression. What drug has helped you? I am now taking Klonopin for the anxiety and Prozac for depression. I would like to cut the Klonopin or at least cut down (now taking 1 mg/day). The Prozac isn't helping my depression at all and I have given it months to work.

Well, the tapering off of Zoloft (and then on to Celexa) went very smoothly. No problems, except almost immediately I began to gain weight on CELEXA. Later on I began to have vivid & strange dreams and severe fatigue and lethargy. I still do. I was/am afraid to try yet another SSRI, for fear of more side-effects,so I've stayed on CELEXA for 7 years now. At this point though, I'm getting real tired of all this weight gain. It's making me Depressed.

Now I have such terrible side effects from saphris I believe- went to family doc for tests, ev okay but have swelling of extremities, extreme sleepiness, food has no taste except sweets and weight gain of 30 pounds in 4-6 weeks. My psychiatrist is leery of taking me off of saphris, but now I am so miserable and my depression is coming back anyways. ANy suggestions? Oh I heard from a friend that Risperdal is a good "booster" for other anti-depressants.

I lost weight before I started the AD, due to less appetite and just being tired. In fact, some of the AD's, like Celexa, can cause weight gain.

s cousin without as many side effects. It has worked great for me! Stay clear of Paxil... extreme weight gain. Effexor made me suicidal and I started cutting myself. I know everyone reacts differently but these are common side effects for these drugs that I have mentioned. Don't just listen to your doctor, you need to do the research also and hear from people that have actually been on the drug.

I have taken both but effexor was harder to taper off of. I know they cause a slight weight gain, if you are exercising and watching calories that isn't a problem. I too struggle with all this but I am just too hyper and the brain moves too fast if I am not taking one.

d say Cymbalta would be least likely to gain weight, we are all different, however, and what drug makes one person gain weight could have the opposite effect on someone else. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon..

Okay everyone I am desperate. I was diagnowed with severe ocd specificallyspecifically relationship OCD after coming off celexa (I weaned off as instructed). Well anyway I got intrusive thoughts wondering if I loved my very loving boyfriend anymore. I doubted everything... had break downsand decoded to go back on celexa got suicidal... the whole 9... long story short... I was switched to lexapro and am now starting week 4.

I was first treated with Pamelor, and it worked perfectly with the exception of side effects (weight gain, dry mouth). I was then moved onto Prozac a decade later. Over the years my doctor has tried various other meds. I have kept a journal, and for some reason all ssnri class drugs make my depression horrifically worse;that is, a sense of dread and panic set in that is dark and horribly foreboding.

My doctor explained to me that Lexapro and Celexa are almost the same drug but Lexapro is more concentrated. There is no generic for Lexapro at this time.
