Lexapro pros and cons

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro pros and cons

lexapro

My doctor recommended Paxil a while back but we decided I should go on Klonopin instead. And I've read that Paxil causes weight gain. So, can anyone give me the pros and cons of the various anti-depressants?? Which are deemed the most effective? Any advice you can give will be much appreciated. Thanks!
My family phy. just ordered me lexapro. What can you tell me about it, pros/cons. I don't like to be on meds but I don't like being upset/crying all the time. Please give advice.
It's really up to you to make the decision on if you think it will benefit you or not. Weigh the pros and cons of each option. Each person reacts differently to these kind of pills so if your heart says to give it a shot go for it. Just don't expect instant results/effects as I'm sure you know!
I noticed Ryan is back - yes, I read the disclaimer and yes I see a dr and talk to a pharmacist about meds and their interactions. My question is what are the pros and cons of Cymbalta? I'm not taking it but have seen it mentioned a number of times.
I am trying to start researching about my different problems a little more as I get older, because when you're younger I think that you just follow what the doctor and your parents say, whereas I'm now old enough to start questioning whether that course of treatment is in my best interests - by identifying the pros and cons etc... So if you have any resources particularly related to depression - I would really appreciate any assistance!!
Not sure why that is actually. As with anything there are pros and cons. I sincerely hope it works for you and your keeping a blog on here again may help people in the future. Good luck and take care.
But we're all different and respond to these medications differently, you should ask your doctor if weight gain is an issue with this drug. Plus you need to weigh the pros and cons of how you feel while taking the medication as opposed to how you feel when you don't. Personally I would put up with a few extra pounds to have a decent life then to live in the hell anxiety can cause. Talk to your doctor about this. I know some medications can cause weight gain. Take care...
because of how the drug works as a neuro chemical, a person's saiety (feeling full) takes a lot longer to reach than a normal person. Hence, the weight gain. *sigh* such pros and cons. Now, I guess I have to really watch how much I eat!
I think for my type of anxiety and my personality (already pretty stimulated by nature) lexapro is a better choice to achieve a more stabilized effect for me. But that remains still to be seen.... i'm gonna taper up to 3/4 tablet tomorrow for the next 4 days with the hopes that with minimal increases like that the side effects will not exponentially increase.... i will keep ya all posted....
there are pros and cons to all the anti depressant/anti anxiety classes. lexapro is and SSRI...these tend to cause more alertness, but also can irritate the liver. 2 other classes exist that also help with depression, they are older drugs...known as trycyclics and tetracyclics...they are taken at night...make you sleep better...and have a different molecular weight and function....they still cause seretonin uptake changes and help....
Hello everyone, I just joined this list after reading your various comments regarding the pros and cons of discontinuing Lexapro. I have discussed this with both my psychiatrist and my therapist (a psychologist). The M.D. thinks it a bad idea to discontinue. The psychologist thinks it might be good -- he says clients who have gone off it feel more "authentic." Lately I have been having problems with confusion and forgetfulness.
hi, i think you'll find half the people on her are on Lexapro, lol, have you looked through the forum? there are A LOT of posts on lexapro and all the great and bad things it does, myself, i have been on it now for 4 months for extreamly bad anxiety attacks panic attacks and globus hystericus, and since i went on it, i am fine! perfect! i have rarely felt better in my life and honestly ill dread the day my doctor says i have to go off it now!
This cuts down dramatically on carcinogens. There will be pros and cons forever and ever, amen about this subject, but for me, it was miraculous. Now if I can only stop munching on everything in site....
ANYONE trying a new med needs to make that decision for themselves, with the doctor, after all the information is on the table and the person has weighed the pros and cons. The patient needs to ask questions and keep in touch with their doctors. It's hard, but it is best to try a new med without getting too much of a preconceived notion either way.
I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY LEXAPRO CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN, BUT IT DOES I DONT CARE WHAT THE DOCS SAY ABOUT IT NOT CAUSING WEIGHT GAIN, THEY ARE LYING! I HAVE BEEN ON 20 MG. FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW AND HAVE GAINED 15 POUNDS, I WAS "MAINTAINING CHUBBY" BEFORE LEXAPRO AND NOW I'M JUST STRAIGHT UP FAT. I AM NOW ON 1O MG. AND I ACTUALLY FEEL BETTER, A FEW WITHDRWAL SYPMTOMS, NOT BAD THOUGH. I TRIED TAKING 10 MG.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for any and all information that you might have such as all the pros and cons of using this med. Needless to say I'm paranoid due to being an addict!! Thanks in advance for your support!!
I think its really just a decision you have to make for yourself by weighing the pros and cons. Hang in there!
I'm told that most are using Effexor because it is newer. As far as the two, What are the pros and cons of each one so I can make an educated decison.
I have spoken to my doctor about this, and she says I have to weigh the pros and cons; PRO I can now leave the house. CON Sex SUCKS (no pun intended). Does anyone know of a drug that doesn't effect sex? Regarding the detox, (mommy52713) could you tell me what your symptoms were? How many days? Did you have to go into a detox center? Was there anything that your doctor prescribed that helped your detox? Florena, I started at 37.5mg.
Of course the decision to take any medication during pregnancy is one you will need to make after close consideration with your doc, weighing the pros and cons. I will tell you that I remained on a low dose of Lexpro during one of my pregnancies without any problems. For me, at the time....it simply was not wise for me to stop taking it....I was having a HUGE amount of anxiety and depression.
Only you and your doctor can weigh the pros and cons. If you will be stressed out signficantly during the pregnancy if you quit, then that might outweigh the use of the pills. You definitely do NOT want to go off AD's "cold turkey". Besides the brain zaps, it is very stressful for you and the baby. If the doctor suggests you remove the Zoloft, he should titrate you down slowly (say, if you were on 50 mg, then go to 25 for a few days and then 10 for a few days, etc).
The bottom line is that you need to talk to your doctor and weigh the pros and cons. And if you don't like that doctor's answer, get a second opinion. Remember though, if it is a chemical imbalance, therapy can help, but usually will not solve the problem. And you're not alone! About 20% of all females aged 24-44 suffer from depression (including me)....and most can find effective and safe treatments during pregnancy.
List pros and cons. Who and what stays and who and what goes. List all the things you do, all the things you believe have fallen totally on your shoulders. Do you do all the shopping and all the cleaning and all the laundry and all the bills and all the organizing that goes into running the business of a household. Are you, in effect, the cheif, cook AND bottle washer? Start thinking about your list and what you can do to pare it down to what YOU can reasonably handle. What can you delegate?
LOL In any case, just look at all the side affects and weigh the pros and the cons of each one. You could try one and if you don't like it you can switch to another. People do this all the time. I tried two SSRIs, celexa and lexapro, before finally settling on Wellbutrin this time around. Medication gave me my life back...twice. .
I also am worried about Seizures but I weighed the pros and cons and decided I needed this help more than the risk of a seizure. Good luck everyone!
For something like this you're going to have to look at the pros and cons of the medication you're on and along with your doctor decide what's best for you. Your Dr might be able to prescribe you something else in the same drug family that might suit you better.
You should weigh the pros and cons of taking effexor. How badly do you want to get rid of your frustrating symptoms. Like i said, effexor doesn't just affect serotonin receptors in the brain, but also effects the high concentrations of serotonin receptors in your gut, so there's a great possibility that this might help through some process that's unknown to me but obvious to a specialist.
