Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro and constipation

lexapro

WOuld anyone know if constipation is a side effect of lexapro? Things seemed fine until I began taking this med.
By using cognitive behavioural therapy, I was able to work with the lexapro and soothe my anxiety. It might take some time to kick in.
lexapro did not make me gain weight. That's a lie. I'm 115 lbs. I've been on LEX. Since I was 11. I started on 5mg daily, then increased all the way to 20mg over 6 years. My depression is strong and I needed more. I went to 25 mg, but that made me have such extreme headaches and worsened my depression. I do Not Recommend anything more than that. I ended up switching medications because after a while, the lexapro (serotonin) was not enough and died out.
Hello Thank you for your reply....I get depressed once in awhile and yes I am pretty stressed working 60 hours a week and the lexapro has certainly helped with that..and I YAWN!! all the time! LOL! I am tired as well but am waiting to see if that passes..it's only been a few days and I am so hoping it works on migraines....thank you again.
If not, there's no reason to take those drugs -- lifestyle changes and therapy will make just as much difference in your life and won't harm you. Taking aspirin and lexapro might make you more prone to bleeding and bruising -- that's a side effect of ssris. Klonopin is addictive. Both lexapro and klonopin are very hard to stop taking. So again, if you don't suffer from incapacitating depression and anxiety, these drugs aren't targeted for you.
Be sure to persist and get your doctor to answer your questions regarding liver function and lexapro. Do an internet research about this, too. and, ask your pharmacist the same question. You may be correct about not taking the lexapro.
I got some side effects for the first couple of weeks, like headaches and diahrrea...and it all subsided.....I love lexapro, such a great A/D....I weaned off extremely slowly and had no problems what so ever.......good luck!!!
Ive been weaning off my lexapro kinda fast, and I've only been on it for 2 months. My question is... is nausea and diarrhea and painful stomach/gas/bloating a side effect of coming off? 2 nights ago I woke up nauseated and threw up once. Then last night, I went to bed and couldn't sleep ALL night b/c my stomach felt SOOO bloated, just really really bad stomach pain, and I had alot of gas... (kinda embarrasing lol.
I was on lexapro 10 for a 4 months and 20 mg for 4 months and then i went back to 10 mg for 2 weeks and then 1/4 of that for 2 weeks, then i stopped... now i get head rush or fainty spells like i am about to pass out...just for a second. it seems its worse when i am sleepy or haven't eaten. Is this normal? Will this stop?
Can you tell me if adhesions from laproscopic surgery can cause severe, chronic constipation? I am a 36-year old female with a history of severe IBS, redundant sigmoid colon and mild endometriosis. I've also struggled with chronic stress, anxiety and worry (due to the unresolved issues below). I've always had constipation predominant IBS, but any episode could be easily cured by changing my diet, eating more fiber and 2 tablets of Equalactin per day.
They're just different from person to person. Did they start you with a low dose of lexapro and work up, or just start you out on a high dose? and are you seeing psychiatrist or just a doctor -- psychiatrists are pretty clueless about these meds, but primary doctors are completely clueless. Whatever, if the symptoms persist, then this may not be the med for you. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, therapy is essential for any cure, though no guarantee. Meds just treat the symptoms.
I noticed a slight difference in my mood just after 7 days and around day 14 was feeling pretty good. Other than some pretty bad constipation all has been going well. Yesterday I noticed I was not feeling as good..today is the same thing. I have a few question I was hoping someone may be able to answer. 1) If I want to increase my doseage what increments shoudl I increase by?
In my case the side effects are very much like all the other SSRI medication I have taken. Some dry mouth, constipation, and just a bit of sexual side effects. Nothing real bad, just takes longer to finish, "if you get what I mean." There are some people that claim it's side effects were too much for them. I guess it just depends ones preception of what bad is. It's a good medication and I have nothing bad to say about it.
I was on lexapro for awhile along with Bruproprion and I think the lexapro did cause weight gain for me, since going off Lex I've lost a few lbs..
But I wanted to tell you that I developed the constipation issue (which I NEVER had before in my life) while on lexapro 10mg. and the belly and the bloating got bigger and bigger. I went to a Gastronolgist twice and he did blood work and all that and everything came out normal. HE did give some powder stuff but it really didn't work. I thought I could be impacted but the doctor said I wasn't at the time.
Hello, So i've been on lexapro 10mg for about 4 weeks now and since a couple of days ago i've been feeling very tired and sleepy to the point that all i want to do is sleep. Will this effect go away or am i experiencing the true effects of lexapro? Thanks.
I have been taking lexapro 10 mg for about 5 weeks now. What I have noticed has been largely postive. The first thing I noticed is that the constant "noise" of negative thoughts in my head is all but gone. I would ruminate on bad thoughts constantly. I would be doing something that would trigger an embarrasing thought from 15-20 years ago and it would take me all day to get it out of my head. I felt like my outward personality was a facade. This is very much reduced.
I was in excruciating pain so I called the dr and he told me to stop lexapro and start effexor. I took the effexor and immediately had the same effects initially as the celexa (trust me I know why some people go wacko on these kinds of drugs)Well I had had it I didn't want to feel like that anymore so I stopped. I knew better to just stop but I figured with all the side effects I was having I didn't want to try another one out.
I only take 5mg of lexapro starting the day PMS sets in (I can tell) and then quit once I get my period. It has worked really well the last few months. and i don't get much in the way of side effects from stopping after about 7-14 days of taking it. The last time I took it I just took it all the time, with Wellbutrin to offset sexual side effects, for about a year. I dealt with insomnia, weight gain (15 pds),loss of sex drive and ability to orgasm.
The worst issue for me has been painful constipation...and I do mean painful. Not meaning to be gross...but during one stretch I went 7 days without a movement so I began taking an over-the-counter laxative called Colace which helped a little. I do think things are starting to return to normal ever so slowly. This next side effect is completely opposite to what is considered normal for an SSRI. My libido has gone through the roof. My wife can pass me in the hall and it is GO TIME!
Hi, I have been taking 10mg of lexapro for a year and a half and recently decided to taper off due to fatigue and weight gain. I have mentioned cutting back to my doctor, but she seems adamant that I stay on the meds indefinitely. I do not agree with this because I am concerned about the long term effects, which are largely unknown. I am going to discontinue treatment with her due to changes in my insurance policy, so I decided to try to cut back on my own.
I'm at the end of my rope here and lexapro is my last ditch hope. I've had the endoscopy and my gastro doc found nothing, so he told me I have non-ulcer functional dyspepsia. Librax gave me insomnia and caused me to look very bloated. Desipermine (I'm sorry, I don't think I'm spelling it correctly) constipated me. I just started lexapro today. I know the Mayo Clinic is doing a study using lexapro to treat Functional Dyspepsia.
What are the side effects, how does it benefit i also take xanax for panic i also have problems with heart pvc's pac's and svt. will lexapro aggravate them? made the mistake of going online and looking up side effects and it's kind of giving me second thoughts of taking it. would appreciate any answers you have.
Personally, I'd stay away from Paxil and Effexor just as Nursegirl said unless they were the last thing left to try. and I also agree, how long were you on the lexapro? I've been on Paxil and lexapro, and Paxil was much more sedating and made me gain a lot of weight, and I'm very active. Or was. Prozac can be stimulating, and its effectiveness with anxiety by reputation isn't as good as other ssris, but it is the most benign to stop taking.
I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY lexapro CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN, BUT IT DOES I DONT CARE WHAT THE DOCS SAY ABOUT IT NOT CAUSING WEIGHT GAIN, THEY ARE LYING! I HAVE BEEN ON 20 MG. FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW and HAVE GAINED 15 POUNDS, I WAS "MAINTAINING CHUBBY" BEFORE lexapro and NOW I'M JUST STRAIGHT UP FAT. I AM NOW ON 1O MG. and I ACTUALLY FEEL BETTER, A FEW WITHDRWAL SYPMTOMS, NOT BAD THOUGH. I TRIED TAKING 10 MG.
called Miralax, it makes you very regular without the rebound constipation and abdominal cramping like stimulant laxatives. It works wonders and is a common use for women with eating disorders on a refeeding program. Its now over the counter so I'm pretty sure you can get it without a perscription. But if you can't find it ask your general practitioner to prescribe it for you, and tell them about all the side effects you have been having.
I've called my doctor twice and each time he has told me that this is not a side effect of lexapro and to continue the medication. Obviously I am now only takikng 5mgs but can someone explain what the "chest tightness" feelings are? Has anyone else experienced this and has anyone else had the muscle aches and constipation?
lexapro has helped with my anxiety and depression both and the only MAJOR side effect I've had has been constipation but I started taking a good Pro-biotic and that has really helped. One other thing I've noticed is it is helping ease my craving for my pain meds. Please let me know if you decide to start taking lexapro.
Wellbutrin 300mg and lexapro 10mg to treat anxiety. So onto my issues. I am always constipated- they are hard pellet stools occasionally covered in mucus. I also have had an internal hemorrhoid for about a year. My primary complaint however is my abdominal distention and bloating that makes me appear as if I am third term pregnant. This bloating is usually accompanied by pain in my mid abdomen and back.
I havent changed anything in my diet or activity, matter of fact I've been eating less and more healthy and have been on my feet more often too. I'm having constipation again and now it's mixed with bloating and gas, I also havent really been needing to pee lately which is creeping me out. When will I stop gaining weight? When will the side effects go away? What should I do? How can I lose the weight I have gained?
