Lexapro and blood pressure

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro and blood pressure

lexapro

If you have just started taking it, is is quite possible you will adapt over a couple of weeks. I have high blood pressure and am a former Lexapro user. I do not recall Lexapro making it worse. Anecdotal information is the lowest form of data, however.
Hi, I took lexapro in the past but unfortunately I had horrible stomach cramps and headaches and my blood pressure when through the roof! This is the only ad I have reacted negatively to so at least there is hope. Everyone is different so it may be the perfect med for you.
( Well, I'll know if I blow up into a ballon. I feel like a beached whale right now as it is.
However I am concerned as I suffer from high blood pressure and racing heartbeat and now I am afraid to take the Lexapro as I fear its going to worsen my not so good blood pressure and heart rate. Is this a valid cause for concern?  I DONT want higher blood pressure and heart rate.  Should I continue taking the Xanax as prescribed if I dont wish to take the lexa? Also is it possible to just medicate myself on Xanax and skip the antidepressants altogether!?
Is it possible to experience increased blood pressure after stopping Lexapro? I have been off of Lex for about 4 months and I am now on 4 different blood pressure meds. Would stopping Lexapro be a cause? If so is it possible to go back to taking Lexapro?
Have you been anxious over anything lately, or in pain? My blood pressure was about 167/114 without my meds. After an injury to my upper arm my blood pressure went way up due to the pain. Let me know what it reads today.

I sucked it up and got used to the med over time and it stopped happening. My blood pressure is still not really under control, at the doc's office I am slightly up 135/89 etc.(I also have white coat symptoms) Last visit my doc wanted me to increase the Lisinopril to 40mg, by the third day I felt the same way in the middle of the night waking up with heart racing out of control and feeling as if I am having a panic attach. I went back to just taking the 20mg and the symptoms disappeared.
when testing me while standing/sitting/laying down. I called the pharmacist to see if Lexapro could cause low BP and she said it wasn't a side effect. Is there different or other information available? Thank you.
Someone recommended that I go check my blood pressure since my hands were swollen. I went to the fitness center to get my bp checked and it was through the roof! Im talking 158/106...I have NEVER in my life been diagnosed with high blood pressure..not even an occasional time. This sent me into major panic mode and I ended up at the ER. The first time they too my vitals it was 122/70 (I did a lot of deep breathing on my way there).
Hi, I dont know what to think of lexapro. I went to the doc for high blood pressure and he said that i am to young to be having these problems (24) and started talking to me about stress. So i told him about some personal problems and he put me on lexapro instead of blood pressure meds (my average blood pressure is 190/110, pretty high) and i dont feel normal. Has anyone else taken these meds, what happened with you when you took it? is there long term side effects, hell short term side effects?
Everyone's response is different, and I found that Lexapro and Paxil increased my anxiety, and thus were not appropriate for me. Xanax, of course, is a fine medication that helps most people get over the hump while the SSRI builds up in the system. When the heart is found through repeated testing to be healthy, and anxiety is thought to be a likely contributor to rhythm problems, I really believe that a good trial of one of the SSRIs is an excellent idea.
I had been on Celexa a few years ago and I had annoying side effects-no sex drive, exhausted, nausea-and the doctor suggested Lexapro. He explained that it's like a reverse molecule of the same medication as Celexa so if I have side effects with one, they may be less likely (or different) on the other. I did much better on Lexapro as far as side effects go. You should talk to your doctor again and ask if you might be better off returning to Celexa.
Hello, I am the one who posted about blood pressure and Lexapro earlier. I am curious, did your blood pressure rise only after several weeks on the medicine, or did it rise right away and stay high for four weeks, or don't you know because you weren't monitoring it that closely? Mine was high at day 1--curious if you had the same or a different experience.
I went through many tests for a year and was on 5 blood pressure meds that did not work until the Dr. put me on Lexapro for the last year or so. My blood pressure is under control 130/80 and it helps me with my stressful job BUT I have put on 20lbs....is there another alternative for stress and my high spiking blood pressure????
Two weeks later off blood pressure meds! Headaches, stiff neck, zzzzzzap a couple times slightly anxious on occasion. I believe this is a horrible thing too start taking! Was recommended for I have MS should've been pointed in the name of nutrition and supplements that indeed are proven to work in studies that may not meet FDA approval but need to make $ on junk pharmaceutical investments. LDN another soon to be regimen I'll be on the path of .
I have been on buspirone and it does not seem to work. Doc wants me to stay on that and then take 1 Lexapro per day. I think he will take me of Buspirone when the Lexapro reaches its working period. I asked and he informed me that this is not a lifetime thing and you can get off this stuff. Also he advises that lexapro is non-habit as is the sleep aid/anti depressent trazadone he also gave me. I am new to this med also as Ambien CR did not do it. Cannot sleep through the thoughts.
i have checked my blood pressure at these times and its normal... also had a echocardiogram and i think everything there is normal... i dont have suicidal thoughts... i am so tired but cant sleep... anytime i close my eyes i feel a pressure in my head and then i imagine stroke and my eyes pop open... my husband travels for work and i keep a phone in my hands almost all the time becuase im so afraid something will happen to me... i wasnt depressed before this anxiety started... but i am now.
Thanks for the info - Yes - it did include limbs aching, Carpal tunnel which I had under control (not now) and of course the memory loss for the Lexapro. Most people who post think that it is great and I was so hoping that it would be for me - not. I am going to call my psy. tomorrow about the pains and memory loss now that I am on Lamictal - it is helping with the depression.
Now my question is I have checked my Blood Pressure and I have noticed some readings like 107/56 or 109/58 or 107/59. Now I was curious if that is dangerous. My BP when in a non anxious state before these medications when checked was an average of 121/81. Thank you!
236 bpm and blood pressure in the 200/120/140 range.) The past two visits Ive had with my Dr. Ive had high BP (160-180/100-110) when I first went in ) and after resting for a bit still high (140-150/90-100) but only resting for 10-15 min. I am always nervous when I go to the doctor and especially if I have to have lab work done. They did lab work and my results came back as normal for my sugar levels, kidney and liver funtions... but the Dr.
Also, I may have asked this before, but I've seen posts online that folks a) have had bad lexapro reactions, and b) it can have negative effects on high blood pressure. I'm kind of confused - do I keep on trying to do the 1/2 pill at night thing? Will the discomfort of not having it during the day subside? Should I call my doc to get more or assume she has a reason for not giving me a new Rx? Your feedback / suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
I too have suffered from anxiety for years - for almost 20 years was on/off imipramine (25mg/day) and heartrate was always in high 80's to low 90's, no other side effects and it was working, but after time blood pressure started to go up. Dr. changed me to lexapro (gained a little weight), blood pressure went back to normal - usually runs around 102/68, but my heartrate has now dropped to the 50-60's which is freaking me out more.
I have put this worry of blood pressure on the back burner for almost 5 years now and just recently the worrying about it came back to where I am scared that I will get myself worked up-get my blood pressure up- and the What If's start-what if I get my blood pressure up and lose my mind and think it I am supposed to get all worked up and don't know the difference. I know this sounds silly to some people but it is worry I am really scared about.
On a recent visit to the Dr, I made them take a Sitting and Standing check of my Blood Pressure and the difference from Sitting to Standing was a 20 point drop. We repeated it to verify the findings. The determination was Orthostatic Hypotension/Low Blood Pressure. Further findings was Dehydration partially causing the Low BP. Now the Sequence of Events Leading to today. 7 weeks ago I was offered a Hot Tub from a friend, the only drawback was I had to move it right away.
I am on Lexapro and my BP is going up and down and is very irregular and the doc gave me some samples of a beta blocker. I am afraid to add one more medication to the mix for fear of more side effects. I am already on 2 mg of Xanax as well as the Lexapro. Please let me know if you had any side effects from the high BP medication.
Hi all-- I started taking Lexapro last week for severe GAD and have noticed that my blood pressure is a little on the high side after taking it and my heart rate it a little higher as well. It seems like every time I stand up my heart rate increases, even from that minimal activity. I like the effects of the Lexapro mentally, but just curious if anyone else had similar side effects and if so, if they went away or you had to start taking something else?
Hey guess what, I'm going to take you off your high blood pressure meds even though you still have high blood pressure." I just don't get it?????????? My suggestion........Get a new doctor because this one is obviously not a Psychiatric specialist. Your withdrawl is not permenent. It will fade in a few months, but what about your depression when you stop all meds? That's no fun either.
