Levoxyl thyroid hormone

Common Questions and Answers about Levoxyl thyroid hormone

synthroid

Dinosaur There are no naturally occuring substances that mimic levoxyl. Armour thyroid is the closest to this-- this is ground up and powdered thyroid gland from either a pig or cow. It is very hard to keep a stable thyroid function with armour thyroid as the amount of thyroid hormone per dose can vary slightly. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn Based on my blood test result my doctor made a derision regarding my thyroid gland, and Levoxyl 0,05 mg was prescribed, My questions: 1. Which blood test parameters are telling that I have to start/stop taking Levoxyl? 2. Can I replace Levoxyl with natural products (some diet, using the iodized salt, etc.) ? Many thanks!
Avatar f tn t been tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4 ) not the same as Total T3 and T4), then you should be sure to get that done, to see where your active thyroid hormone levels are. TSH is totally inadequate as a diagnostic for thyroid, even when coupled with your Total T4 result. Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions.
Avatar f tn Your doctor should be testing free T3 and free T4, the actual thyroid hormones in addition to TSH (which is a pituitary hormone and subject to many influences othet than thyroid hormone levels). TSH is a screening test at best and never should be used alone to diagnose or treat thyroid conditions. How did you feel when not on meds?
Avatar f tn Your thyroid levels were fine and if you added the cytomel to the 100mcg of levoxyl, the TSH will likely be too low (ie, too much medication) and if you stay on cytomel, the levoxyl dose would need to be changed most likely. The weight gain is not likely due to thyroid.
Avatar f tn t understand why your endo said your thyroid was okay, but put you on Levoxyl??? If you fluctuate into the high end of the normal range, the Levoxyl might just put you over the edge into hyper. However, my main point is that you have to be consistent with thyroid meds over a five week period or you will have no idea how they're affecting you. Did you try a half? Do you have any hypo symptoms? Do you have a pituitary issue?
Avatar f tn It is only a messenger hormone from the pituitary to the thyroid glands. TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many variables that it is a poor diagnostic for thyroid. FT3 is the biologically active thyroid hormone that largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. The main function of FT4 is to be available for conversion to FT3. What was the cause for your hypothyroidism? Was it Hashimoto's?
Avatar f tn I think alot of people just take a synthetic thyroid hormone. I'm on levoxyl. Though I don't know if it is vegan. You would have to contact pharmaceutical companies to find out if it's vegan.
377296 tn?1281095438 I currently take Levoxyl and recently found out I am pregnant. They tested my thyroid levels and my TSH 0.027 and the FT4 was 13.6 . What does this mean? Does the Levoxyl suppress the thyroid from working, and supplement the hormones my body needs? ANy advice would be great- thanks!
Avatar f tn I've been taking 150 levoxyl for 9 months for hashimoto's hypothyroidism and have been stable with thyroid tests. Now my FT4/FT3 indicated hyperthyroidism. What could have caused this change?
Avatar f tn Weight gain is, typically, a symptom of being hypo. Are you sure your thyroid hormone levels are adequate? If you have current results, please post them, along with reference ranges, which vary lab to lab and have to be posted with results.
363243 tn?1331033850 I did as she told me but eventually started taking the synthetic hormone on my own because I was feeling so tired and could barely get out of bed. Well, I just had my TSH, FT4, and FT3 drawn yesterday and found out that my TSH improved but my FT3 and FT4 are lower than before. I talked to her about Armour and Cytomel and she said it was contraindicated with me because I had tachycardia on a low dosage of levothyroxine and those other two drugs would cause my heart to beat out of my chest.
Avatar n tn I only have a fixed amount of thyroid hormone available....argggh...would appreciate any info that explains what happens physiologically post total thyroidectomy...
Avatar f tn which is a serious condition, and cause a host of other problems, You need to Post your Free T3 and Free T4, these are your actual hormone levels, The Tsh is just a hormone your pituitary send to your thyroid and does not reflect your thyroid output. Once you post the "FREES" then other members can advise.
Avatar f tn The disease went into remission after a few years-no meds except the Levoxyl for thyroid. I moved and switched doctors so I went off the Levoxyl. My TSH was in the normal range so my new doctor didn't treat me until I convinced her that was I suffering symptoms again, despite my normal TSH, back in 2010. I've been on Levoxyl since. I currently take 50 mcg of Levoxyl and continue to have hypo symptoms.
Avatar m tn Levoxyl (levothyroxine) gives you all the thyroid hormone you need -- if it was a total thyroidectomy, 50mcg will likely not be enough -- usually 100mcg would be a replacement dose for 135 pounds -- would ask your doctor if you need a change.
616450 tn?1228433627 I just had my thyroid levels tested last week--two different times--and had different results with both tests. That's why I'm convinced something is wrong. My heart can't seem to keep up with me. I get short of breath. When I do my regular job at work my heart really gets going. I'm afraid all of this has permanently affected my heart.
Avatar m tn However, I believe I do have problems with either the dosage (.125mg) of my thyroid hormone or the drug itself (levoxyl). I have an endocrinologist that has been with me since the surgery and they refuse to change anything because my T4 level is in the "normal" range at 1.5. Every time I see my endo I constantly complain of many side effects. These effects include fatigue, weakness, WEIGHT GAIN of about 40 pounds, decreased sex drive, depression, and some memory loss.
Avatar n tn Sometimes it takes a few weeks to months to adjust to a lower dose as the body may have become accustomed to extra thyroid hormone, however in the long-run it is safer. Talk to her doctor to make sure this was his/her rationale for the dose decrease.
1104024 tn?1257910100 As a start, TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is a pituitary hormone that is an indicator of your thyroid hormone levels in the blood. The TSH signals to your thyroid glands to increase or decrease production of thyroid hormones, which are predominantly T4 and T3. T4 is mostly stored in the body and ideally is converted to T3 as needed. Most of the thyroid hormone in the blood is bound up with protein molecules and is thus rendered inactive.
Avatar n tn There should not be any signifcant change to the metabolism with what you went through. Extra thyroid hormone does not help as much with weight as many people think.
1554612 tn?1294410935 Armour thyroid is a dessicated porcine thyroid hormone that has a ratio of about 4 to 1 of T4 to T3. It is a prescription med so you'll need to see a doctor. You should be aware that not too many doctors will prescribe Armour, or its equivalent Nature-Throid, largely because of a mistaken belief that T4 meds are always adequate.
213044 tn?1236527460 The physicians used the Wayne clinical diagnostic index,[69] an objective tool for deciding whether a patient’s thyroid hormone therapy is adequate, excessive, or insufficient. Statistical tests showed that the three physicians’ judgment didn’t differ in classifying patients. Among the 148 patients, 108 were clinically normal. This means they were taking enough T4 to be free from symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Avatar m tn Symptoms can be related to still being too low in thyroid hormone, and also due to the filler material in some of the T4 meds. If you will post your thyroid test results and their reference ranges shown on the alb report, members will be glad to assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment. Also, if you have to have basically a hypo-allergenic T4 med, there is a new one called Tirosint that is pure T4 in a liquid gel-cap. You can read about it here. http://www.tirosintgelcaps.com/index.
Avatar n tn Levothyroxine, also called L-thyroxine, is a synthetic form of thyroxine (thyroid hormone). In the United States, brand names include Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Eltroxin, Tirosint and Unithroid; Generic forms are Levothyroxine sodium USP and L-thyroxine. There is still debate over whether generic thyroid supplements are as effective as thyroid brand name supplements.
