Levothyroxine with food

Common Questions and Answers about Levothyroxine with food

synthroid

Dinosaur Thank you for your question, Yes, it is recommended you take it in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food. Taking levothyroxine with food may cause reduced bioavailability and may lower drug levels leading to signs or symptoms of hypothyroidism. In addition, cottonseed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber may decrease absorption of levothyroxine from the GI tract.
Avatar f tn Hi - my 9-year-old collie was diagnosed last month as hypothyroid, and the vet prescribed levothyroxine sodium, 600 mcg once a day with food. He has developed diarrhea and last night couldn't keep even chicken and rice down, vomiting it up in the night. He is hungry and eats, but it runs through him. Should i stop or reduce the levothyroxine? Thank you so much for any ideas. BTW, the diagnosis was clear with his thyroid number (not sure it is T4??
878888 tn?1319634044 I forgot to mention she was concerned I gained 16 lbs within same time period (even with change of diet and exercise). I am also Hypothyroid and on Levothyroxine 115 mg. I have 2 questions, If I take Metformin with evening meal and thyroid in am is there still a chance for interaction? Is there a good diet that works for people who have somewhat high blood sugar level but not at extremes that will help me lose weight.
Avatar f tn I posted on 6/17/2015 regarding my concerns over having had one episode of AFib and being concerned with the levothyroxine causing another episode. The only TSH info I had at that time was that my level was 5.6. This was taken on 5/7/2015. I just received my lab results in the mail for blood work done on 6/11/2015. She ordered at Free T3 and T4 screening on this one. In my last post you requested the results. There was no ferritin tested and my vitamin D is ok.
393419 tn?1228447393 The key is to be consistent when taking your meds. If you take it on an empty stomach, then always do so, and if you take it with food then always do so. God luck.
Avatar m tn ll be feeding all the time, but it might really help. Worth a try. Might even consider pumping food overnight at a slow rate. That is what we did with my daughter, she took most of her liquid over an 8-12 hour period then either bolused during the day at regular mealtimes or sometimes we'd pump it over an hour. Helped tremendously. Pushing the food in-An upper GI would be helpful. I'm wondering if there is granuloma blocking the stoma area on the inside.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 9 years ago at the age of 20 and was given Synthroid (I do not remember what the exact dose was) and I took it for a few years. 1 year ago I completely stopped taking any medications. About 3 months later (in October of 2007) my metabolism went through the roof, and I lost around 15 lbs (got down to about 115 lbs), and began to show symptoms of HYPERthyroidism (had insomnia for about 6 weeks, night sweats, increased bowel movements, nervousness).
Avatar n tn I am currently taking levothyroxine, and was wondering if its ok to have my morning coffee with real cream? The first thing I do in the mornings is take my levothyroxine, and then have my coffee.. I always wait 30 minutes or so before having my breakfast.. I have received many different answers to my questions.. Can someone help me?
Avatar n tn There is a difference in Generic Levothyroxine and Name Brand Like Synthroid, I went from 10mg to 25, 50, 75, and finally 100 mg of Levothyroxine (Generic) At that time I started seeing an Endo, He informed me that when it comes to thyroid meds, Generics are not as consistant as name brand meds, all during this prior period my symptoms were all over the place, they would stop for a few days then reappear and I would feel bad for two days, The Endo put me on a name brand (Synthroid) 100mg, at thi
Avatar f tn According to the instructions on the insert that comes with the medication, levothyroxine is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, with a glass of water, then don't eat or drink anything for 30-60 minutes. Other medications should be separated from levo by at least an hour or they can interfere with absorption.
7991152 tn?1396061810 S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of generic levothyroxine made by a number of different pharmaceutical companies. The various brand name and generic tablets of levothyroxine may differ in how much levothyroxine they contain; how much of the levothyroxine is absorbed into your body; and, how much levothyroxine circulates in your body.
617316 tn?1274867515 Hello, Has anyone tried to combine Armour with Levothyroxine? I have been taking Levothyroxine for 2 years and still have many symptoms e.g. extreme tiredness, sore mucsles, brittle nails, dry lips, mouth ulcers etc. My TSH has never been normal ranging from 7.5 to -0.1 but never the dose my doctor wants me to get to which is 0.6. I want to experiment with Armour but my doctor will not prescribe it for me so I have bought it over the internet.
Avatar n tn I'm sure others may disagree with me, but I drink milk/have it with my cereal for breakfast whenever I want; same goes for other food items that contain calcium. You aren't going to be getting several hundred mg, like you would taking a supplement. I've never noticed that it had any adverse effect, but keep in mind that we are all different and what works for me, may not work for you.
Avatar m tn *Take your levothyroxine first thing in the morning, and wait an hour before eating. Taking food at the same time can slow or impair absorption of levothyroxine. *Wait an hour after taking your levothyroxine before drinking coffee, including decaffeinated coffee. Coffee has the ability to impair absorption of levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn As far as i know Levo should be taken with water to get the full benefits, Take an hour before food and drinks or three hours after :) But be consistent in what you do ...
3210078 tn?1345661059 I am Hypothyroid i was diagnosed with this a year and a half ago and they still havnt regulated my thyroid level with Levothyroxine so i switched to these pills thet my dad bought for my at a health food store named Raw Thyroid by Natural Souces Co. Has anybody tried these?...They seem to be working for me and i only taken them for 3 days..
Avatar m tn Acella's NP thyroid can be absorbed sublingually (under the tongue) which is an option. I've read Armour and Naturoid both have too much cellulose due to reformulation which binds the desiccated thyroid so it is mentioned you need to chew them or crush them first. You can mix it with honey or syrup. You may need to increase stomach acid with betaine HCI (hydrochloric acid) with pepsin supplements for better absorption. Vitamin C also helps with absorption which i found interesting.
Avatar n tn oils are good for you like olive oil, MCT coconut oil (good in coffee see health food store) cook with coconut oil no butter eat nuts like brazil nuts has selenium also white flour bad has bromides in it the us still uses in flour but in europe its outlawed, use almond flour, then there is chlorine brushing your teeth and taking shower is bad for thyroids (germans came up with the chlorine,to kill people) get a chrystal shower head has crystals in it cost about 60 bucks last for 6 months yea i k
Avatar f tn I used to take after eating but my doctor told me to take it alone with no food first. I either slowly began to reject it or it got to high dosewise for me. I started getting every sign of hyperthyroidism. The chest pains, heat intolerance, breathlessness and diarrhea were the worst of them. I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. My doctor told me to lay off the Levothyroxine for about a month to see where we are.
Avatar f tn Now I just do it 1x daily, with Vitamin C, orange juice with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and L-lysine capsule. (Lysine is supposed to assist raising iron and the apple cider vinegar (organic unfiltered with the 'Mother') helps with absorption/digestion. The iron makes me nauseous. I take Ferrous Sulfate. I also take 1 tablespoon organic blackstrap molasses (high iron content) 5x a week (with 500mg chewable vitamin C).
Avatar f tn My tsh level is 2.0 how much levothyroxine should i be taking? i am gaining about a pound a week. I dont eat junk food. also i stay active. Please help. My Doctor doesent seem concerned about my weight, but its very important to me.
5054005 tn?1362922551 Thyroid hormones control the metabolic rate (the amount of energy expended while at rest) so when there is too much thyroid hormone this will cause the metabolic rate to speed up - hyperthyroidism. When there is not enough thyroid hormone the metabolic rate slows down - hypothyroidism. The treatment for hypothyroidism is to take thyroid hormones to increase the metabolic rate.
Avatar n tn I am a 36 man and was recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I originally went to the doctor with muscle, joint and general fatigue symptoms. My TSH came back at 4.58 and combined with my fatigue symptoms they decided I have hypothyroidism. The doctor prescribed 25 MCG tabs of levothyroxine (generic) for 60 days and then they’d retest me. Never being sick in my life I am having trouble dealing with the diagnosis. Is 4.58 alone enough to prescribe life long treatment?
Avatar n tn My OB perscribed 137mcg levothyroxine with another test in 6 weeks. I have a formal appt with her later this week. In themean time, a family friend suggested a chiropractor. I have never seen a chiropractor, so I was a little sceptical. He found some weird tender places in my neck and did a few adjustments that took all of 30 seconds. I walked out of there feeling better than I have in MONTHS! For the first time in a long time I had enough energy to give my 1.
738890 tn?1232214279 Hi I dont have a question really.. just found this site and hope to meet some people like yourselves whom also suffer from hypo.. I'm having problems with my levothyroxine just like most people do.. I'm not sure if it's time to get off the meds or not ( my Dr. said I can try to go without it and see how i feel since my tsh is getting a little high) but I'm afraid my numbers might drop eventually again..
Avatar n tn Hello, My question is regarding hypothyroidism and hydroxycut. I've ordered the Hydroxycut Instant Drink Packets and i'm wanting to know if they would potentially interact with my thyroid medication. I'm currently on 175 mcg of levoxyl. Also, i'm 21 years old and miserable with my weight. I exercise daily and eat help (i'm vegan) and nothing seems to help. My weight has jumped up to 156-165 lbs at 5'6. i'm always tired, lacking energy overall, and depressed.
Avatar f tn Has anyone experienced late/delayed periods with Levothyroxine? My doc prescribed me on 12.5mg a day of levo (I actually have to cut the pill in half). I'd love to hear feedback. Thank you.
