Levothyroxine side effects thyroid hormone

Common Questions and Answers about Levothyroxine side effects thyroid hormone

synthroid

Avatar f tn When you start taking levothyroxine or other T4 med, your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) goes down, resulting in less stimulation of the thyroid gland and less output of natural thyroid hormone. The net effect is basically no change in your important thyroid levels: Free T4 and Free T3, until your med dosage is adequate to essentially suppress TSH level. Then further increases in dosage allow your your Free T4 and Free T3 levels to rise as needed to relieve symptoms.
Avatar n tn The generic pills have fillers in them and varying doses of the thyroid hormone.3 different thyroid/endocrine socities recomend brand name.It is also recomended to take your thyroid pill in am with a glass of water(not sure why) and to wait at least a hour before eating.Hope this helps.
1201433 tn?1328997637 This is not a side effect of Levothyroxine. What could be happening is the medication for thyroid may not be balancing the thyroid out correctly and throwing off other hormones causing this issue. My thought would be to ask for a full round of tests. Thyroid FT3 and FT4, FSH/LH - DHEA, A1C and your metobolic panel labs.
1063764 tn?1272821064 You've attached your comments to a very old thread and the original poster is no longer active on the forum. The symptoms (side effects) you describe are all symptoms of hypothyroidism. When you switched from Armour to Tirosint, your body, most likely, was missing the T3 component of the Armour. You may need a higher dose of Tirosint or you may not be converting the T4 to FT3, which is the active thyroid hormone. You might need to add a T3 component (such as cytomel) to your medication.
Avatar f tn The "side effects" of levothyroxine are, typically, those of hyperthyroidism (over medication). I think you misunderstood your doctor... TSH needs to be lower than your current 6.5, not higher and taking the medication will lower TSH not raise it. Is TSH all that was tested? If so, you need to ask your doctor to test Free T3 and Free T4, which are the actual thyroid hormones, whereas TSH is a pituitary hormone.
482089 tn?1208351876 Many experts recommend you take vitamins or supplements with iron at least two to three hours apart from thyroid hormone. Iron can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption if taken too close together. Be careful about taking calcium and calcium-fortified orange juice at the same time as thyroid hormone. Allow at least 2-3 hours apart, so absorption is not affected. Don't take antacids within two hours of thyroid hormone. Allow at least 2-3 hours apart, so absorption is not affected.
Avatar f tn 75 mcg seems like a large dosage for someone with normal but borderline free T4. What was your TSH? My endocrinologist (who is generally very good but is confusing me with a recent issue, as I have posted about) likes to use TSH merely as an initial indication that there may be a thyroid problem, and then dose based on the actual thyroid hormone levels (particularly free T4.
Avatar f tn High TSH means low thyroid hormone, so what the medicine is doing is supplementing his thyroid hormone so that he can get back into the normal range. Don't be surprised if they eventually have to up his dosage though, that is completely normal as well. Very soon he should have more energy and feel more like himself. If he does have any unpleasant side effects from the medicine, switch him to the brand name of it--Synthroid.
Avatar m tn Approximately 1 week ago, I experienced dizziness, head fogginess, eye blurriness, eye pressure, being lethargic, confused and the list goes on. I thought it was an eye problem. I had my eyes examined for eye pressure as well as the optic nerve. All were normal. I realized that it was possible my thyroid levels could be off. I scheduled a doctor's appointment on Monday and the results came back that I was at 8.5 and that I should be at 0.4 - 4.5. The doctor increased my dosage from 0.
Avatar m tn No, I actually have the side effects with levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn It may be a combination of both stabilizing on the med itself and having the condition of hypothyroidism in general. Many sufferers have this issue as I can personally contest too. I do not have these "real time" dreams at all since getting my Armour thyroid right - along with becoming optimal with my condition. Do you have anxiety with your condition too? Most people that have built up anxiety issues from the hypo will say these dreams are more vivid.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed of having a follicular thyroid cancer and my both thyroidglanda were removed. Because of depression, I took 3 tabs of 150mcg levothyroxine, what is the side effects of that?
Avatar f tn Tirosint contains only 4 ingredients - levothyroxine, gelatin, glycerin, and water. There is no know reaction to the levothyroxine itself. If anyone did have an actual allergy to the fillers they can have a compounding pharmacy make up medication with just the levothyroxine in it. That said, you can really suffer when starting medication. I found this out the hard way when I first started thyroxine.
Avatar n tn s use levothyroxine rather than thyroxine in their thyroid medications? I have noticed that the levothyroxine has a sodium atom, heavier molar wieght and different structural formula. Isomers are known not to function like the parent compound. So why levothyroxine and not thyroxine in thyroid meds?
363243 tn?1331033850 4 (started at 7.56) I stopped the Levoxyl because of the side effects it had (for me) I started Armour natural dessicated thryoid and within 3 days the side effects from the Levoxyl were gone. My blood pressure on Armour has been normal (112/70) consistantly. I take 60 mg (1 grain) each morning. Do I feel perfect? No. But I can function and sleep normally which I couldn't on the synthetic hormone.
