Avatar m tn 60 years old, Female, 5 ft height, 81 lb weight. I am giving the complete history below but this is the issue in nutshell "Is Levothyroxine right medication for high cholesterol, when the thyroid results (serum T3, T4, TSH) are normal ? If it is wrong treatment will it lead to lasting health effects, currently we are seeing about 17 lb wt loss in 6-8 months. Weight went down from 97 lb to 81 lb.
Avatar m tn High cholesterol is my only symptom and no I do not take glucosamine or chondroit supplements nor combination. In fact, I have been eating lots of fresh chopped garlic sprinkeled on foods, in reading that garlic cuts cholesterol. Yes I eat lots of oatmeal, at least four mornings a week.
907968 tn?1292622204 If your FT3 and FT4 levels are not adequate, you will have lingering symptoms, and high cholesterol is a symptom of hypo.
Avatar f tn In a recent test, my TSH was 4.45 on a dose of 75 mcg levothyroxine. I am a vegetarian and my diet does not contain eggs, dairy or much oil. My weight is normal (~115 lbs), but I am not unable to get sufficient exercise as I also suffer from fibromyalgia. Should I be worried about my cholesterol levels? If yes, what can I do about it? Is it related to my thyroid condition?
2087589 tn?1332593596 Yes, high cholesterol is a symptom of hypothyroidism. My cholesterol follows my thyroid levels pretty closely - thyroid levels go up, cholesterol comes down, thyroid levels go down, cholesterol goes up. I'm not surprised that your doctor didn't mention your B12, because, like I said, it's mid range and doctors will look at it and say it's good; however, I know that I have to keep mine way at the top of the range in order to feel well.
Avatar f tn My recommendation is that you start a low-dose statin, Lipitor 20, so that we can get that LDL below 100. High LDL increases your risk of heart attack and stroke and vessel damage. Please let me know if you wish to start the Lipitor." My father was on this medication and weaned himself off because he'd become inactive due to terrible muscle pain. I'm afraid to try it, but would like to reverse this since it's such a new issue.
Avatar f tn 5 and yours would indicate your thyroid is underactive, and would contribute to high cholesterol and elavated BP.
1374383 tn?1278685137 m 21 and two months ago a little after her findings, I had a blood test done, on it I had a tsh level of 60, pretty surprised, and both my bad and good cholesterol were high, HDL 57 LDL 126. I dont have insurance but went to a free clinic and the dr. said she'd put me on 25mcg of Levothyroxine I mentioned about my sister and she said she would never start someone at 50 that's way high. Well now I just got re-tested and my tsh is 88.
Avatar n tn Foods with a very high Glycemic index aren't really good for anyone. These foods are usually very processed (such as store bought white bread), can be high in fake sugars (high fructose corn syrup), etc. (Basically low in everything but sugar and starch.) They are all processed very quickly, so that can result in huge variations in blood sugar levels. A life time with lots of high GI foods can make you more prone to diabetes and heart disease.
Avatar m tn Internal “shaking” 24/7 (worsens at night and upon awaking) ; constant fatigue; high blood pressure; high triglyceride levels; taste change (used to LOVE sweets, now I hate them); excessive weight gain in middle; abnormal hair growth; acne; take deep breathes often; sensitive to light; skin is very thin; bruise easily; left eye pain, with headache; “episodes” where I lose coordination and all symptoms worsen; tiny red dots over torso, chest, and top of thighs (not raised); mood swings; get VERY
Avatar m tn If your MD told you that High Blood Pressure is not caused by Thyroid, he is mistaken. There are many causes for HBP and Thyroid problems is one of them. High Cholesterol is also caused by Thyroid. I would try to find an Endocrinologist who is familiar with thyroid problems, and again post your labs here.
649848 tn?1534633700 Hi des900 LDL is not a good marker for many of us, because there are so many things that can cause cholesterol levels to increase, besides hypothyroidism. It's normal for the body to produce cholesterol and many people produce LDL when they aren't even hypo... my husband is one example of this. His LDL is very high, but his thyroid levels are in the normal ranges. Many of us need more than just levothyroxine to get our Free T3 levels up to a point, at which we can be comfortable.
390388 tn?1279636213 Then I took the rest of my pills (BP pills and cholesterol pill) and went to let the dogs out. The shaking was threw my whole body and I thought I was going to get sick. Came in and sat down, realizing that my body was trembling. Took my BP and it was 179/111 HR 104. It stayed high for a couple hours. Now (3 hours later) it has came down to 146/99 HR 65 now. I still feel pretty odd. Stomach feels upset and like I'm hungry (but I'm not), lightheaded and feeling palps.
5789562 tn?1374459029 m insulin resistant. I am now taking 200mg of levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and 40mg of atorvastatin for cholesterol and fatty liver. I also take fish oil, multivitamin, D3, allegra, and baby aspirin. My medical provider is focusing on my thyroid before tackling everything else. I should also mention that my mother has non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, dementia, diverticulitis, and myopathy. I'm considering taking coQ10.
Avatar f tn Hi there, hang in there and get your t4/t3 optimized. I am in the same boat, LDL and tri's very high...diet and exercise actually seem to sway my tsh readings and cause recommended dosage changes. My tsh has been consisently good on .112 synthroid but I still have depression/weight gain/puffy face & eyes/fatigue...hoping to add something to my regimen...I'm 46 and feel 56 some days!
Avatar f tn I finally went to a doctor to be tested, and he also found that I had high cholesterol levels (252 total) for the first time in my life. My mother has hypothyroidism and suffered from similar symptoms before she began treatment. The blood tests for hypothyroidism showed TSH at >15, but the T4 level was slightly above 5, so within the "normal" range. The doctor has thus decided that I have sub-clinical hypothyroidism and is not going to treat me for it.
