Common Questions and Answers about Levothyroxine and calcium interactions

Avatar m tn Likewise, I was never told to avoid taking anything with my levothyroxine besides food and calcium/multivitamin (basically just not at the same time, but I could still have a multivitamin). I've also never had a problem taking benedryl (besides that it knocks me out) or any other drug with my hypothyroid meds. If you're on a drug for your hypothyroidism, there is this nifty tool at the top- under drugs, you can find drug interaction.
427801 tn?1203844562 my question is, some of these are supposed to be taken at certain times/doses and some should or cant be taken with other items (i.e. calcium). so im looking to get as much input as possible into the dosing, dosing schedule, and counterindications of other meds/foods.
Dinosaur Also, it is recommended you separate taking iron-containing multivitamins and/or calcium supplements and levothyroxine by at least 4 hours. Thank you, Dr.
708731 tn?1229049180 I would look at the birth control pill in relation to your thyroid medication and disease, and also the consequences of mixing the birth control and the Prozac. You may find that switching birth control will allow for treatment other than Prozac. Just a thought, but I think it has merit. Keeping up on your bloodwork and getting stable at the correct level is the best medicine. If Prozac helps short term, go for it. I'm taking xanax.
Avatar n tn I have been on levothyroxine for 3 months now, I feel wonderfull and am loosing weight. However my Dr recently put me on Metformin for PCOS and Insulin Resistance, I feel terrible! All I want to do is sleep. GI probelms not bothersome. My doc said to stop the Metformin and I feel normal again. How can I get my insulin down without feeling like crap? My pharmacist also said the 2 drugs interact with eachother. Please Help!
Avatar f tn i also take hormones and xanax...i read where alot of my meds have interactions...but pharmisits say its ok.............
Avatar f tn I drink coffee with creamer as well, but I wait an hour after taking my thyroid pill (which is pure TORTURE!). It's just the calcium suppliments or "calcium-fortified" foods and some iron fortified, that should not be taken with your thyroid pill(s). Hopefully these links will post. If not, just google "thyroid drug interactions". thyroid.about.com/od/thyroiddrugstreatments/a/bedtime.htm thyroid.about.com/cs/thyroiddrugs/ht/takemeds.
482089 tn?1208351876 Had my thyroid checked about three months ago my TSH was 7. Was put on 50mg levothyroxine and was fine for around 5 weeks and then it seemed to build up in my system and i got these horendous headaches. Had to stop taking the medication as I couldn't stand the headaches. Started again a couple of weeks later at 25mg and after three weeks the same happened again. I need to take the medication but cannot cope with these headaches, whats the answer, anyone else experienced this.
Avatar f tn Hypercalcemia can also occur if you have excess thyroid hormone and Vitamin D can increase the symptom as more calcium get absorbed due to increased Vitamin D activation. So check your Free T3, Free T4 and TSH values. Anything close to high end of reference range (for TSH lower end) is abnormal. Also worth to rule out hyperparathyroidism by doing serum calcium and PTH together. In such cases taking Vitamin D aggravate the symptoms.
Avatar n tn Are you abnormal in calcium levels? Thyroid disease and bone disease is linked together yet when you treat issues as one and take calcium with thyroid - usually thyroid gets blocked. You can read alot on calatonin (sp?) and see how that could help you with a bone or calcium problems along with keeping the thyroid optimal with meds too. I poo-poo kelp products. I found them very nasty and inconsistant. If your looking for quality information on iodine - read up on postassium iodide/iodine.

Avatar n tn I compete in figure bodybuilding and reqularly take creatine, glutamine, whey protein powder, and BCAAs. What effect will synthroid meds have on these supplements and should I continue using them?
Avatar n tn So, in other words, high fiber needs to be spaced apart from calcium and calcium needs to be spaced apart from the Synthroid. Oh, so much to manage! ~ But back to the original query… Curious as to why a dr is prescribing vit d in and of itself (?).
Avatar f tn Anyone have any insight? And about 2 yrs ago, my doctor had prescribed levothyroxine, and after 20 days of taking it, I developed a red rash around my neck that went away 2 days after i stopped taking it. Anyone had that happpen? I'm asking because my insurance decided to drop coverage of the synthoid which costs $42, as opposed to the $9 of levo that is covered.

Avatar m tn t be accurately diagnosed via a core needle biopsy and that diagnosis is better achieved with thyroidotomy. Since starting Levothyroxine I have noticed increasing fatigue, and a soreness in my neck and jaw, to the extent that eating a bagel in the morning feels like I put my jaw through a rigorous workout at the gym; very sore and stays so for an hour or so afterwards. Below are the test results from my initial visit before starting Levothyroxine.
1175033 tn?1492201228 com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN00413 Grapefruit juice, and other grapefruit products and certain other citrus fruits can interfere with several kinds of prescription medications. Don't take these interactions lightly, as some can cause potentially dangerous health problems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming any grapefruit products or citrus fruits if you take prescription medications. You may need to eliminate grapefruit products from your diet.
Avatar f tn So this morning, I was thinking over my week and replaying what went on yesterday, like I have to do so much now since being hyperthyroid because my brain has almost completely gone on strike! It dawned on me that when my pharmacist was "giving me advise" on my meds, he actually stood there thinking, and almost with a throw-this-in-for-good-measure tone, said to have no dairy 2 hours before or after taking this....
Avatar m tn We, typically, have to space things throughout the day… for instance, calcium supplements shouldn’t be taken within 4 hrs of thyroid med… Take calcium at noon and at night. I’m not sure where you saw iron contraindicated. Iron is necessary for proper metabolism of thyroid hormones, but it does need to be separated from them by a few hours. If you’re taking thyroid hormones in the morning, try taking the iron at night.
