After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. A post is not uncommon when having a root canal. Did the dentist say you have gingivitis and that's why they want to laser your gums? If you do have gingivitis around that area it would make sense because the gum needs to grow around the crown, which it can't if you have gingivitis, just like your natural tooth. Is this a molar tooth your having the work done on? That could also explain the post because those teeth are so big.

The U-shaped tear is also called a Horshoe Tear. If retina doc is recommending laser (aka "barrier laser" to form a barrier of laser around the tear), then I'd do it. Sure, there are risks. One week after laser surgery I started having arc or circle shaped flashes in treated eye. These were not present before surgery.
