Common Questions and Answers about Laser surgery for toenail fungus

Avatar m tn For three or four years my toenails have looked as they do in the photo. They grow up to a certain point seeming healthy, then suddenly the toenail darkens and seems thicker and a new one begins to grow with it. They always grow up to the point in the photo and then the problem returns and a new healthy toenail starts growing, pushing the old one out. My dermatologist put me on anti-fungal medication, when my testing for fungus was positive, but now the tests come up as negative.
Avatar n tn I too have toenail fungus on both big toes & for many years. Have had one of them removed just to have it grow back the same after 2 removals. From my understanding one must use both an oral med along with a topical med if it is truly toenail fungus. I suffer from multiple skin cancers & have had 6 surgeries in 6 weeks with about a year more to go as I also have RA & thus a lousy healing & immune system.
Avatar n tn This is caused by toenail fungus. These are fungi (called (dermatophytes) that are in the environment and infect the nails, hair and skin. The toenails get infected by walking in a gym barefoot, or wearing someone elses shoes, having moist feet and then getting in a shower where someone else had athletes foot. Breaking a toenail will make you more susceptible if you never were before. Since you already have these toenails infected you can take a drug called Lamisil (there is generic pill too).
Avatar m tn I'm 34 year old healthy male who sufferes from bad toenail fungus for years that is beginning to become painful. I've been prescribed Terbanfile Oral 250 mg QD as a treatment by a dermatologist for a 90 day treatment. My PCP has told me there are possible risks/benefits which I was somewhat aware of and am researching further before proceeding. The scariest thing he told me is that terbafine can cause "irreversible" damage which I assumed was to the liver.
Avatar m tn Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result.
Avatar m tn Even with high chlorine levels I started seeing a slime in the water and on checking the filter it was almost stopped up with this clear slime. Was this from toenail fungus? Can the toenail fungus thrive in water temps up to 105 f?
Avatar f tn Have you looked in to laser treatment for the fungus. It is safe and effective if the toenail is not too thickened. Lames il is a tough drug on the liver.
Avatar m tn It does sound like a fungal infection. Do dermatologists do toenails? I really don't know, usually podiatrists do feet.
Avatar m tn Toby, You are correct, this does sound like a toenail fungal infection. Fungus may turn a toenail yellow, brown and sometimes black. The nail may become thickened with fungal debris growing underneath. The fungus likes to grow under the nail lifting it up so yes it is common for it to detach. There are other things that may mimic a fungal infection. Trauma itself can cause toenails to have similar changes as can a yeast infection.
Avatar f tn I have, in the last two months, noticed a vein running vertically underneath my big toenail. The vein is pushing up through the toenail. I did not realize it was actually a vein until I tried to file it down smooth and it bled. I do know I have somewhat of a nail fungus as well because the nail has been peeling for several years. Not think and yellow though. My podiatrist want to remove the nail and biopsy the area. Not sure what to do about this.
1430129 tn?1283281475 I have a nail fungus that I've dealt with for nearly two years. I have had my doctor prescribe cream, I also took Lamisil (spelling?) I went to the dermatologist with my son yesterday, and he told me to file the side of my nail with the fungus all the way down, he said in order to get rid of the fungus that's in my nail, I have to get rid of that part of my nail. Is this true? I also think I have a fungus on one of my toenails.
Avatar f tn Aging is the most common risk factor for nail fungus ..... Nail fungus tends to affect men more often than it does women, particularly those with a family history of this infection.
Avatar n tn I've been treating my toenail fungus, but as I treat it… it's getting white and really dry, it has lines on the toe nails too. Is that because of the medication I'm putting on my toenails?
Avatar f tn I also want to say that my doctor did take a sample from my nail, had it tested and it came back positive for Onychomycosis.
Avatar m tn What is the usual dosage for treatment of toenail fungus with Diflucan? My doctor prescribed it to me and it just seems to be different than normal. He said to take 100 mg/daily for the first 10 days of each month until it's gone. Is that a normal regimen?
Avatar n tn My big toe and to a lesser extent toe immediately adjacent have all the symptoms of the unsightly onychomycosis. The skin next to my big toe has for some time had a reddish appearance, but has just recently starting eroding and has rapidly deteriorated. There is no pain, but it is very unsightly and no amount of moisturing helps. Because Lamisil has potential liver toxicity and is expensive, my doctor did not seem to favor treating my onychomycosis systemically.
Avatar m tn There seems to be a grouping of around 5 black dots surrounded by a lighter brown circle under my big toenail. It’s diameter is about 1/4 of an inch. It is not painful and it is close to the center of my toenail. Any clues to what it might be? Thank you.
4683754 tn?1357938574 infection and injury. The most common cause of toenail loss is a contagious fungal infection cause by various types of dermatophytes, which are fungi that feed upon the keratin found in the skin and nails. Dermatophytes can also affect the skin, resulting in athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis. The problem with this is that in a warm, moist environment—i.e., the environment found in shoes and socks—the infection can spread rapidly and transfer to the toenails, resulting in onychomycosis.
Avatar n tn If you have any other questions, I dealt with a fungal toenail infection off and on for years. I may have more ideas for you if this is what you are dealing with.
2209241 tn?1339023213 It sounds like you have toenail fungus. You need to take an antifungal medicine orally (Lamisil) for 3 months and you will lose the nail(s). The natural remedies don't work to my knowledge as you have penetrate the nail and the other drugs don't do that.
Avatar f tn Ok so I had a pedicure almost 3wks ago and went back to get the polish changed when I noticed that about half of my big toenail is green. Fungus!!! So I yelled WTF to the lady. I've always gone to this same place. She told me it was common during the summer. Could this affect the baby??
483814 tn?1214311480 I've heard of people having luck with various tree oils, eucalyptus (Vicks vapor rub), tea tree, etc. I have had toenail fungus for years, and found most doctors won't prescribe Lamisil even if you have a normal liver. I tried to get it before my diagnosis and no luck. Now a friend of mine went through the same thing and was able to convince his doctor's partner to write the prescription.
Avatar n tn I would like to know alternative treatments besides Rx drugs (like Lamisil) for toenail fungus. Thanks!
1415174 tn?1453243103 It is just thAt it takes a year or longer for a toenail to replace itself. A fungus is a really hard thing to get rid of too. It can always come back years down the road. So, use topical meds and oral if the doc says you have nail fungus.
Avatar m tn I've been battling toenail fungus for over 6 years .. any advice that actually works? I've tried everything .. vinegar, clorox, all of the Rx creams .. frustrated and tired of it, and embarrased to go barefoot or with sandals.
